Sentence Ninja 1

What we love…

The graphics, the content, the visual/audio support, the homework section

What we’d love to see…

I would love to see an app that utilizes the same context, but incorporates pictures for our students with ASD,

A multi-player interactive game for building language skills focused on simple to complex sentences.

Our Rating

Sentence NinjaSentence Ninja, created by Smarty Ears, is a multi-player (up to 5 players), multi-level interactive game that teaches English language order from simple to complex phrases. There are 39 difficulty levels within the app and the user/moderator can determine a variety of setting options to modify per student need.

As a user progresses through a given level, an avatar moves across the top of the screen. This provides a visual representation of how many questions are left within that level. Within each level, the user is asked to drag words to the bottom to form a simple or complex sentence. If the user provides an incorrect answer, the words are returned to their “home” position and the user can try again. At the completion of a session, the progress can be found in the reports center.

 Sentence Ninja2

I want to give insight into a few things that impressed me within this app. There is a “hint” feature. For the students who receive speech/language therapy services, the ability to obtain a “hint” is great. I believe it is imperative to teach my students how to advocate for themselves, and this gives them the ability to seek out help if they need it. I also appreciate the color-coding ability, which would allow for the students who need a visual representation to have a little more support. There are certainly more great features in this app, but I will spare you every last detail!

Sentence Ninja3

My final favorite feature is that the user/moderator can modify the exercises and deselect targets. I say this because there are phrases/sentences that contain various items that may be non-preferred. For instance, one of the phrases includes a clown. I am okay with clowns, but some of my very close friends are not! Though it is humorous to incorporate them on occasion, we don’t want to instill fear in our little friends!

What if you want to have a student work on this at home? No worries! There is a section labeled “homework”. As the user/moderator, you can access homework specific to the level the student is working on within the app. This “homework” can be e-mailed to whomever or printed directly from the iPad.

Beyond all of the motivational components incorporated within this highly visual app, the students are able to earn belts by completing group levels. There are six group levels in this app, so there are six different belts to be earned!

Data tracking?! Is it important to you?! It’s available, too! Allow yourself the time to work with the students for their maximum availability and transfer data later. That’s a benefit for you and the child!

Overall this is a great multi-player interactive game for building language skills, focused on simple to complex sentences. I Love the graphics, the content, the visual/audio support and the homework section. This app is appropriate for students who can read or manipulate words, but I would love to see an app that utilizes the same context, but incorporates pictures for our students with ASD,

Courtney Decker is a speech-language pathologist working with students of varying needs. A good portion of my caseload is with students who have complex communication needs, which I find more rewarding than challenging. She loves reality shows focused on music, such as The Voice and The Sing-Off. When she has free time, which doesn’t seem to be often, she likes to cross-stitch, knit, crochet, and sew.
