Preschool Academy by Ebooks&kids Review & Giveaway
Preschool Academy by eBooks & kids is a universal app for iOS designed for preschool and early elementary ages children. The app features four “worlds” described below targeting cognitive skills such as small vs large, near versus far, problem solving and puzzles as well as object recognition. The app also works on fine motor skills as well including dragging, tapping, interlocking pieces and more. Narration for the app is available in English, Spanish, French and Italian.
The first “world” is the sweets world. Concepts practiced in this include finding objects in specific areas (in vs out of the box), small versus large and near versus far. Several puzzle games are included as well which include matching objects to an outline, seeing a puzzle and having to make it from memory and more. As your child’s skills progress the game gets harder to target their skills.
In the second world, which features monsters you must use recall skills to find an object in a field, find specific colors and more. Verbal and visual cues are provided to assist with completion although hints are not provided. Some of the games are a bit difficult and can be frustrating for kids if they get the answers wrong repeatedly.
In the third world which is robot world there are seven games. This world focuses on numbers, tracing of letters, finding the same objects (circle, square, triangle), completing a maze, finding a letter, matching and more. There is a listening exercise as identifying right vs left, puzzles.
The final world focuses on music. There are music themed puzzles, matching games, letter tracing, matching pairs, counting, differentiation of objects.
My son enjoyed the robot world the best although all the worlds has similar types of games with a different theme. I liked the consistency throughout the app with different twists on the games. He enjoyed the letter tracing and color matching the best of the mini games contained in the app. I loved that the background music could be turned off and the narration still worked.
In terms of enhancements – I would like to see an option for a parent to turn on and off specific games which may be too difficult for their children based on skill level. My son had trouble matching the monster and grew frustrated because the number of monsters remained the same and the objects were very similar. This game was played in all of the worlds.
The app contains external links including iTunes and a contact section protected by a parental gate. It also includes some integration with GameCenter as well which can be controlled in your devices settings.
Overall, this is a great app to work with preschool and early elementary aged children. This app provides repetition and targeting, children have key concepts reinforced to help them understand early academic ideas such as matching, colors, numbers, tracing, shapes and more in a fun and interactive way.
