MarcoPolo Ocean by MarcoPolo Learning- Review + Giveaway
MarcoPolo Ocean is the first app in what is soon to be a series of apps by MarcoPolo Learning, Inc. It is designed to spark young children’s interest in, and appreciation for, the ocean; teeming with life, from the surface to the depths below. It features beautiful graphics, lots of interactivity, and plenty of learning opportunities.
To begin their ocean adventure, children will build 5 items: a coral reef, a herring, an orca whale, a boat, and a submarine. In build mode, children will hear a brief introduction about the item or animal they are building. They are then given one piece at a time to place on the corresponding shape on the screen, very much like a puzzle. Once finished, the items they build will be placed in their appropriate location in the ocean.
The ocean is like a big aquarium that children can explore. They can add as many fish and mammals as they wish. The animal selection changes depending on the distance and depth they are in. In this way, children can only place animals where they belong in the ocean. Children can move the animals, boat, and submarine by dragging them on the screen and they will react accordingly. For example, dragging a shark next to an angel fish will make the angel fish swim away and the shark snap its jaws. Sprinkling fish food will attract fish that find it delicious. Children can also turn the lights on their submarine and take it to the very bottom of the ocean to explore the sea floor and make discoveries. The background sound changes as you go deeper in the ocean, simulating an adventurous and mysterious atmosphere.
There are few things I would like to see in future updates. In the build mode, some of the pieces are named and/or described. I would like all pieces to be named and/or described as they are placed. It just feels like there is something missing when some items have audio prompts and some do not. I would also like to see a pop up with a name and a brief but interesting fact or two about each animal when they are pressed either on the build mode or the selection menu bar in ocean mode. I would like to see all the animals in the build section available for children to put in their ocean. This may mean having a polar section for polar mammals shown in the whale build.
Overall, I found Marco Polo Ocean to be an excellent app for supplementing science lessons about the ocean and it’s animals. It definitely has a lot to offer and children will have hours of fun building and exploring their very own ocean. It is well worth checking out and I will definitely be in the lookout for future MarcoPolo Learning apps.
