Seagate Slim Portable Hard Drive for Mac – Review
The Seagate Slim is an incredibly small, lightweight portable hard drive. It is designed to integrate with your Social Media accounts as well as being used a a backup for your computer. It is available in Mac and PC versions. Both can be used with either type of computer, but come pre-formatted to suit your computers operating system, NTFS for Windows and HFS+ for the Mac version. I tested the 500GB Slim for Mac with a Mac Powerbook.
The Slim comes with the Seagate Dashboard software installed, and you need to download this to your computer to fully access all the drive’s capabilities. It is USB 3.0 enabled and backwards compatible with USB 2.0. It comes with a USB 3.0 cable, and unlike other hard dives I have used it only requires a single USB port on your computer.
The Seagate Dashboard has 3 functions: Save, Share and Protect. The drive also comes with introductory videos to explain how to use each of these features.
Protect is where you create a backup plan of what you wish to backup from your computer, and when you wish it to automatically back up, this is available on the windows formatted version only. When it is formatted for Macs the Protect option is not available, instead you use the Macs Time Machine to create a backup schedule. I used my Time Machine to create a backup every evening, I have a large iTunes library so the 500GB drive was not large enough to back up both this and the rest of my computer files. I could choose to backup just the iTunes library (which is almost 500GB) or any combination of files excluding my iTunes library. I used it to back up all my computer except my iTunes library which it did quickly and efficiently. The 500 GB drive is an ideal size for a Mac Book Air and the drive Slim is also available in a 1TB version (and the PC formatted one is also available in 2 TB), which should be big enough for most people.
Do you share a lot of personal photos or videos on Social Media? If so you will appreciate the extra peace of mind this option gives you. With “Save” enabled you can automatically back up all your photos and videos from Facebook, YouTube and Flickr. Then if you accidentally delete them from your smartphone without downloading to your computer you won’t lose them as the Slim will have saved them automatically for you. You can disable any of these 3 that you wish.
I love having the extra peace of mind that these pictures and videos are backed up automatically. This is a really useful feature and I’d love to see it expanded to include Twitter and Instagram as many people as share their pictures via these networks.
Share is designed to make it easy to share any photo or video stored on your Slim via Facebook, YouTube and Flickr. If you log into to these accounts via the Seagate Dashboard you can stay logged in to making sharing quick and easy. In Facebook you can also create new albums via the Dashboard, though I couldn’t find a way to upload to existing albums. When I first set this up I had some problems with uploading to Facebook taking a long time, but logging out of Facebook and in again solved the problem, and it now works very well. I don’t use Flikr so I didn’t test this but YouTube worked fine too- you can choose which category to share it in and it is listed as private until you change its status. It is much easier and quicker to share my photos and videos via the Seagate Dashboard instead of directly from my Mac.
Overall, if you are looking for a portable backup solution the Seagate Slim is a great choice. I really was impressed by just how small and light it is – comparable in size to an iPhone at only 3″ x 4.5″ x 0.4″ and weighing in at just over 5oz. I love having automatic back up of my photos and videos from Facebook, YouTube and Flickr, and the Dashboard make sharing photos and videos on Social Media quick and easy too.
The Seagate Slim 500GB is also sold as the Seagate Back Up Plus Slim, it is available from Seagate, Amazon and other retailers RRP $69.99.
