What we love…

Fun physics puzzler format, teaches essential components of fractional math without feeling like it is a lesson.

What we’d love to see…

More levels! Multiple player profiles, ability to reset progress.

Summary

A physics puzzler that subtly introduces fractional math in a fun but educational game. Highly recommended!

Our Rating

Slice FractionsSlice Fractions from French app developer Ululab is an educational app that in it’s first week was an Apple App store Editor’s Choice in over 80 countries. After playing it I can see why. At heart Slice Fractions is a physics puzzler with elements of Cut The Rope and Fruit Ninja and a cute Ice Age theme. However, it is more than that as the developers sneak in educational content so the player learns basic fractions whilst having fun solving the puzzles. The app has no written or spoken language (just numbers), so the student does not need to be able to read to use it. It contains 60 levels and each one must be solved before moving on to the next, if the player is having trouble with a level and needs to keep repeating it hints will appear. A friendly woolly mammoth is the star of the app, he wants to walk, but obstacles keep appearing in his path and it is the players job to clear them away. Blocks of lava or ice can be cleared by hitting them with equal-sized blocks. But beware, if the ice block is too small some of the lava will remain, if it is too big the leftover ice will block the path.  As the player solves puzzles the woolly mammoth earns new hats, so he ends up with quite a collection including some pretty unusual ones such as an octopus and an ice-cream cone!

The puzzles start off very simply, teaching the concepts of how to move hanging blocks and clear the path. Gradually more complex puzzles are introduced. Students learn how to divide different shapes into equal parts, and then learn equivalent fractions, numerator/ denominator notation, subtracting fractions from one, and fraction ordering. This is all introduced as a natural part of the gameplay, so it feels like they are just solving a puzzle instead of mastering a difficult math concept. The subjects covered fall into Common Core Math Standards for Grades 2-4.

For most people the idea of learning about fractions or solving fractional maths questions elicits a groan, but on the other hand many people enjoy the challenge of solving a physics puzzler. Ululab has cleverly created a physics puzzler app that teaches fractions but still feels like a game, so children learn whilst having fun. I used this app myself and with my 6 year-old and ten-year-old and we all enjoyed it. I would like to see multiple player profiles added so if more than one family member is playing others can’t jump forward in level and miss vital parts of the learning. I would also like to be able to “re-set” the app for a new player to start again without un-installing the app. My (gifted) 10 year-old did zip through the levels pretty quickly. I’d love to see more levels added to keep older children and adults coming back for more and the developer says more levels will be coming.

Overall, Slice Fractions is my favorite kind of educational app. It is fun and engaging and introduces important mathematical concepts in such a way that the student wants to keep playing, and so keeps learning at the same time. Highly recommended!
