Bottom Line …

Simple, easy creative play for young children. This is a great app for young kids- it is really simple and intuitive to use. Toddlers and preschoolers can use it easily even if they are only just starting to be able to draw simple lines or dots. The kids love how the monsters come to life and love seeing their reaction to the various foods foods.

Our Rating

Sago Mini MonstersSago Mini Monsters is the newest app from Sago Sago. The Toronto, Canada based app developer Sago Sago is a sister company to the famous Swedish children’s app developer Toca Boca, but has its own unique style. The app is designed for toddlers and preschoolers, and is simple to use and child friendly. It has a parental section with advice on using the app, and there is a “Sago News section” with links to other apps. Both of these are protected by parental gates and they can both be hidden in iPad settings.

The action takes place in a green, oozing, bubbling swamp – suddenly the top of a head pops up from the slime. The child drags it up from the swamp and they can begin to create their own lovable monster.

They can draw on their monster to decorate it- there are 5 colors to choose from. The tools are very simple for young children, just tap on the color then draw. They don’t have to worry about going outside the lines as the app automatically keeps all the drawing inside the the lines. Once they’ve finished decorating their monster tapping the check mark will make him spring to life as his eyes, mouth and horns appear. If they don’t like them no problem – just pull them off and the monster will grow a new mouth, eye or horn.

Once the child is happy with their monster, food appears in the swamp and they can pull it out to feed him, he’ll happily eat whatever you give him whether it is birthday cake, garlic or even old boots. He’ll give appreciative noises when he’s fed, and be sad if you throw away his food.

When he’s full he lets out a big burp and a giant toothbrush appears to remind the child its time to brush his teeth. Once his teeth are sparkling clean again it’s time to get him looking his best- accessories appear from the swamp and your child can choose their favorites to decorate him. Accessories include flowers, bows, hats and even bandaids! After all the fun making and playing with their monster the child can take a picture to remember him by. The monster goes back to the swamp and the child can make a new monster friend if they like.

The kids love how the monsters come to life and love seeing their reaction to the various foods foods. They can create a totally new monster every time they play, and they can play in short bursts- perfect for a young chid’s limited attention span. It is a really fun, safe creative app for young children. It is most suited to 2-5 year olds, and older children with special needs, but my almost 7 year-olds enjoyed it too.
