Sodoku Junior by Paxos Games – Review
Sodoku Junior by Paxos Games is an app designed for iPad designed to teach the youngest of users (age 5+) how to play Sodoku as well as teach reasoning, critical thinking, memory, hand eye coordination and more. The app allows you to choose from a variety of grids including 4×4, 6×6 and 9×9 both with pictures as well as numbers and facts about the items you are placing on the grid. There are a variety of customizable levels which allow you or your child to pick the best choice for their skill level. To play you tap on the tile (picture/number/fact) that you want to place and then tap on the spot where you want it to go. You can undo and redo moves as well as remove tiles that are placed in the wrong spot. As you gain more experience with the app, the game gets progressively harder.
I loved this simplified version of Sodoku. Although it lacked a tutorial, based on the smallest grid 4×4 it was easy to understand how you had to place items in order to successfully complete the puzzle. This app will appeal to younger children as well as older adults who may not be familiar with it. The variety of objects to place along with the information about the objects makes it engaging and a learning experience each time you play.
In terms of enhancements, for a brand new Sodoku player I would suggest a “tutorial level” which would take them through several puzzles with hints or a non-timed option. This would allow them to learn the game without the potential frustration that comes along with getting the answers wrong. It would also be nice if there was a multi-user profile allowing more than one person to play and save their progress to date. The app does have hints but they are timed and each hint adds 30 seconds.
Good app for teaching critical thinking, patterns, memory, as well as patience. It will appeal to younger and older players who are learning the game. Interface is clean and easy to use with hints for new users. Multiple grid options and icons make it easy to customize to your skill level. There are no external links or in app purchases.
