USA – Illustrated Atlas by Silcom Multimedia – Review
USA – Illustrated Atlas by Silcom Multimedia is an iPad only app designed to teach your children about the various geographies of the United States. The app provides six different interactive maps, four games, audio narration and meets common core early learning standards. The app contains fully illustrated maps of the United States with about 200 cartoon images related to each state including landmarks, facts about the state, descriptions, places and more. In addition there is a map of all of the United States and their capitals along with key facts such as state nickname, motto, population, state symbols, flags and seals. Skills practiced in the app include: history, geography, common core learning standards, and literacy skills related to reading the content.
This is a comprehensive app which is great for teaching your children about the various states in the United States and recently came in very handy for a project when we were trying to explain the various states to our kindergartener. He knew that our family lived all over the country but once we were able to show him information about each state, he realized how far apart all of us lived. I can see this app also being very helpful in a classroom setting during a study about the United States to provide information about each state which can be taught in an individualized manner and reinforced using the information contained within the app. The app contains a significant amount of content and will provide a great reinforcement for children as well as be a helpful app when homeschooling or taking a trip to educate your children about areas you might visit. My son and I enjoyed working on collecting the stars throughout the app and demonstrating mastery of different areas.
In terms of enhancements, I’d like to see a game where the user can demonstrate that they have mastered the content such as location of states, key facts about the state as well as a parent console so you can see areas that might need improvement for your child. If this were to be used in a classroom, it would be nice to have multi-user profiles so you can track progress of your child. The user interface could use a bit of updating, but for the amount of content contained this is a great app. The narration within the app is not on par with my expectations – it can be distracting as it is not always correct, we solved this by muting our iPad and having me read the content to my son. At times the pronunciations seemed more computer generated rather than native English speaking which resulted in words not being recognized such as “Mt Rushmore” “Misery River” aka Missouri River and “Grand Canyon” are not pronounced the way I would hear them in native language. This is one of the largest drawbacks in an otherwise fantastic app.
Great app which provides lots of educational content for elementary school aged children. This app could be the perfect companion to a fourth grade geography lesson where you are learning about each of the states or it could be helpful in a homeschooling curriculum. This app aligns with common core standards and is a great companion to promote early childhood learning of states and placement as well as key facts. There are no in-app purchases, outside links. The app does contain a protected parental gate which allows you to change settings as well as email the developers.
