We grew up reading The Tortoise and the Hare and now as parents, we share this wonderful fable with our children to teach them not to be overconfident like the hare or never to give up because even the slow and steady can win the race, just like the tortoise. But have you or your children ever wondered what happened after the tortoise won the race? Did the outcome of the race change them?
The first of Sheldon’s Bedtime Stories, The Golden Trophy, starts where the classic fable ends. At the start of the story, we see Sheldon the Tortoise and his animal friends rejoicing at the winners’ podium, in contrast to a very unhappy Hare. Fast forward to now, we see Sheldon spending an idyllic life at his cottage by the pond. All seems well for Sheldon but for the Hare, he did not forget his defeat and he steals the Golden Trophy! What happens from that point onwards is both exciting and fun because you don’t know what to expect next, and I’m not going to tell. Will Sheldon get his Trophy back? Will there be a happy ending for everyone?
The story unfolds over 9 chapters and you must savour each one of them slowly. Don’t be in a hurry to move to the next page or you’ll miss all the fun. Your child will find lots of actions as he taps on the characters and the various objects to move the story along.
The story is short, which is appropriate for younger children who have short attention span. The animal characters are cute, the music and sound effects add to the various mood in the story, and the animations and illustrations are superb. What I really like is how the storyteller enrich the whole experience. He’s not just a narrator. His comments and thoughtful questions make the adventure more fun while encouraging kids to go deeper into the story and subtly teaching them some morals.
The Golden Trophy comes with 2 bonus mini games that are unlocked when you first finished the story. The puzzle game offers 4 puzzles to complete and the Tap-a-Mole game is great for training your child’s reflexes and hand-eye coordination, both of which are age appropriate. There is also a choice of 10 language options (English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Catalan, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish and Chinese) and you can turn off the text display if you wish.
On the whole, this is a very well done storybook app, one that will surely appeal to your preschoolers. For parents, you will appreciate the affordable price tag for the amount of animations, interactions and extra features that are packed in this app.
