What we love…

impressive graphics, four different areas within the app

What we’d love to see…

ability to go back to the locker room during game play, playground space added within the app.  Also – animals are dropped off at the pool rather than left with parents which seemed a bit odd – would like to see the option to have parents

Summary

App aimed at younger children who enjoy playing in a swimming pool environment.

Our Rating

Dr. Panda’s Swimming Pool by Dr. Panda is a universal app designed for iOS that has the animals in a variety of aquatic settings at a pool. You can dress in a variety of bathing suits in the locker room while taking a shower and getting ready for the pool, diving off a pirate ship, playing in a sandbox, going down a water slide or playing in a small wading pool with a variety of lunch items available.  This app is aimed at toddlers and preschoolers.  Skills practiced include language both receptive and expressive, and some fine motor skills.

I liked that the app had four different play areas similar to a traditional beach.  The graphics were crisp and they showcased especially well with the animations.  I liked the different possibilities for each play area and the opportunity to have a parent with a child – show me the slide, how do you dive off the pirate ship, where is the watermelon which could open the app up for expressive language learning.  It was nice that there was seating and other activities around each of the pools for those animals that didn’t want to be in the water.  It could also be used to demonstrate turn taking, first baby panda goes in and then baby hippo goes in as well.

One of the things I wished could be changed in the app was if you didn’t wait in the locker room until all of the characters were dropped off you had to go back and restart the game over to have them come back. In addition, there was no option to go back to the locker room in order to take a shower or change your outfit while playing within the app which would add another nice option for gameplay. I also wished that the parents would have stayed at the pool with the animals – we typically see drop off in other games like Dr. Panda Daycare, but I wasn’t sure why that would happen in this app.  I also felt like some of the activities like diving off the diving board, and bouncing on the trampoline required correct placement in order for them to be completed which could  be frustrating for some children.  I would like to see more play areas added as well as a playground space within the app.

Compared to some of the other Dr. Panda apps, I felt that this app had less content compared to others, but the price of the app does reflect that.  I think with a few tweaks and additional content this app could be great! There are a number of skills that can be practiced within the app including motor, sharing and language which means that children can play while learning!

Alison, the American iMum is from Massachusetts. She lives there with her two sons and husband. In their spare time, they enjoy playing outside, enjoying nature and of course testing apps and fantastic products on their devices. My older son loves technology and loves testing out the “latest and newest” apps and tech. I love sharing information about apps and products with others to help them make decisions without feeling overwhelmed with all of the choices.
