How do teachers usually teach new sight words to their students? Typically, teachers introduce a few sight words at a time and then reinforce these through some word games, flashcards, writing and spelling exercises. Then the words will be reviewed again and again until they have been mastered. While repetition is essential for sight word acquisition, it can also lead to boredom for the students.
The good news is that Seven Academy has developed an app to keep sight word practice fun and exciting for kids. The Sight Word Adventure has a total of 11 fun games that present students with different ways of seeing and playing with up to 320 sight words, while working on a variety of skills like matching, listening, following directions, memory, fine motor, observation and spelling.
There are 5 levels of play and sight words in the app. The games become more challenging as students advance through the levels while the sight words in each level correspond to the respective grade level, Pre K- Grade 3. Though it is not necessary to start from level 1 as all the levels are unlocked, I suggest starting at level 1 and let the app identify words, if any, that the student is still having difficulty in recognizing. The app is able to highlight words that have not been mastered and you can also specify which of the target words that need more frequent repetitions.
Besides being able to place emphasis on certain words, this app also allows you to add your own words (with voice recording) e.g. school’s spelling list, for the kids to practice with while playing the games. These custom words will appear more frequently than the other words.
You can further customize the app with your choice of English accent – American, British or Australian. You can also add as many student profiles as you want, each with his own progress record. Lots of customization options!
There are 3 learning pathways in The Sight Word Adventure – the Magical Forest of sight words, the Treehouse of reading games and the Cave of spelling games. There is no specific order in which games must be played and no limit to how many times they can be enjoyed!
The Hide and Seek game in the Magical Forest is where kids search for the hiding Kangaroo and get sight words that they can keep in a treasure box. 3 words are introduced each time but these may not appear immediately in the games that follow. Because of the nature of the games, words that have not been introduced can still be tested.
Fortunately, there is no penalties for mistakes and kids do learn from the games as they are guided to the correct answers. Ideally, more words should be introduced each time and more could be done for these words such as a short sentence showing how the word is used or a picture that shows its meaning. In any case, students should be exposed to these other strategies outside the app as well.
With the recent update to the app, there are now 6 reading games in the Treehouse and 4 games in the Cave.
* Construction : Build a structure to help the mouse reach the target word and eat the cheese.
* Silly Songs : Recall the words to the band’s song, in the correct order.
* Bingo : Match words on the Bingo balls to the word cards and score with a row of three matches.
* Pop the Balloons : Aim the slingshot at the balloon with the correct word and pop it.
* Whack-a-mole : Whack the moles that are not holding the target word card.
* Memory Match : Matching pairs of sight words.
* Speed Racers : Construct a racetrack by matching the words on the dominoes. Once finished, try to beat the purple snail in a race.
* Typewriter : Practice spelling by typing words on a vintage piece of technology.
* Bear’s Maze : Guide Bear through the maze to collect letters that make the target word.
* Letter Scramble : Unscramble the word and spell it from memory.
With so many fun games that cater to different likes, there will never be a dull moment for kids playing The Sight Word Adventure. As a parent, I like that the app is able to show me my youngest’s success/difficulty with each of the words, and even allow me to customize the games so that he gets to hear, read and spell the words that he hasn’t mastered, more frequently. It has also been a great tool in helping him practice his weekly spelling tests. This is definitely a sight word learning app that I would highly recommend to any family or school.
