Speech Sounds on Cue for iPad (US English)
Reviewed by Suzanne
Speech Sounds on Cue for iPad was designed by a Australian Speech Pathologist at Multimedia Speech Pathology to help her clients with severe speech difficulties to practice independently  It follows the “Integral Stimulation” method of Apraxia treatment – “Listen, watch and Imitate” but adds automatic recording and playback. It contains 550 videos to teach the production of 20 consonants and words arranged by initial sound.

The opening screen shows consonant sounds and three different activities. The basic activity allows for one sound choice.  It begins with a video demonstrating a mouth making the sound and verbal directions on how to form the sound. The next screen presents a picture and auditory cue of a phrase followed by the target word and as the word is produced the video of the mouth saying the word plays. Immediately following the phrase is presented with the video of the word being mouthed with no sound. Finally the phrase is presented and the microphone is turned on for the student to record the word. The student may: re-record, playback, repeat the exercise, or move on to the next word.  If you press select word in the upper right hand corner you can present a specific word by selecting it.  The random activity allows for the choice of more than one sound which is great for students working on a specific class of sounds or errored versus targeted sound (I have a student who has learned the k sound in speech previous years but since I have had him this year the t sound is also k so we work on both sounds with the target words mixed together). The rest of the activity is the same as the basic activity.

The rhyming activity has 13 pages. Each page has 4 words that rhyme. When  you touch the picture the word is said. Again you can select which page to go to.

I like that this app has a phrase/sentence activity. I like that the video shows how to produce  the sound/word to provide the student with a model other than yourself or the students in the class. It is nice to be able to record more than once before moving to the next word. The ability to select a specific word without having to complete all the words before it is also a nice feature.

I would like to see data collection added. I would like to be able to turn off the phrase/ sentence and just present the word for those students who insist on saying the whole thing when they are struggling at the word level even though you request over and over to just say the word.

Overall, a great app that targets phrases and sentences; provides video and auditory presentations and allows for recording of student production. I have given it four stars and would increase this rating with a few minor additions!
