There are many different external storage solutions available for the iPhone and iPad, but I think the Hello Kitty MAX Flash Drive is the smallest and lightest one we have tested so far. The drive is approximately 2″ x 0.9″ x 0.3″ and weighs a mere 1/3 oz! It is available in 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128 GB models, we tested the 32GB version. It is only compatible with iOS devices with Lightning connector, not older Apple devices.
As the name suggested the Flash Drive has Hello Kitty branding – both on the exterior of the drive and in when using the drive with the companion app. Set up is very simple – just download the i-FlashDrive free companion app and plug the drive in via the lightning connector. It has a removable cap over the USB connector and a built-in cover over the lightning connector that is permanently attached and flips out of the way when the connector is in use.
The companion app is very well done- it offers a huge array of options to back up your contacts, social media, photos, videos and music. You can automatically, or manually, back up your Facebook photo album, instagram photos, Calendar, Tumblr, contacts, iOS device photo album, Google Drive and Dropbox. I love how easy it is to backup and download content from all these different areas. Backups can be stored within the app (using your device’s storage) or in the Flash Drive. I prefer to store most of my downloads on the external drive as it leaves my iOS device storage free for apps. You can also zip and unzip files, record voice memos and visit Vimeo and YouTube from within the app. Another one of my favorite features is the ability to add videos to your Vimeo or YouTube playlists and download them into the HelloKitty Max so that you can watch them later when offline. I used this feature before a recent overseas vacation to download some episodes of a favorite T.V. show which was great for entertainment on the long flights.
It is very simple to move files from the in-app or Flash- Drive storage- you can select all or pick individual files to transfer and copy or move them to Dropbox, Google Drive or iCloud Drive as well as to the Flash drive. You can also download files to your computer by plugging the drive in via the USB connector and dragging and dropping.
I found the drive very easy to use and the file transfer was fast and simple – just remember to switch off your iPad/ iPhone’s automatic screen lock when doing large transfers.
The Hello Kitty Max Flash drive is is a great option for adding additional storage to your Lightning enabled iPad/iPhone. I love how tiny and light it is, the built-in connector cover and the flexibility of the app- it has many more backup options than most external storage devices. My only, minor, gripe is that the app is only in portrait mode- which can be a little irritating when you have an iPad in a keyboard case that only holds it in landscape mode.
The Hello Kitty Max is available from photofast.com in 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128 GB models. The RRP for the 32GB is $69
