Keeping fit and healthy is an important priority, and heart disease and stroke are the world’s leading causes of death. According to the CDC almost 70 million American adults have high blood pressure, less than half of them have it under control, almost another third of American adults have pre-hypertension. Early detection is important because it allows you to seek medical help and make diet and lifestyle changes to reduce and control your blood pressure. MOCAheart from MOCAcare is a new hand held device that can help you monitor your cardiovascular health quickly and easily in your own home.
MOCAheart works with a free app to measure and track your heart rate, blood oxygen level and “MOCAIndex.” The MOCA INDEX is a qualitative measurement of blood flow that is correlated to blood pressure. I recently tested the MOCAheart with my iPhone. The device itself is small and light enough to carry in a purse, backpack or pocket and weighs less than an ounce. It has a rechargeable battery which charges via a mini USB cable.
To take a measurement open the app, switch on the MOCAheart and then hold it with one thumb on either side pressing gently. A trace appears on the screen and a circle gradually fills as it takes the reading. I did find that almost every time I took a reading I got the message “Your scan has been interrupted. Keep your thumbs steady to continue.” However, if I just continued to hold, the scan completed with no problem and typically took under 30 seconds to complete.
Once your scan is complete you can see your Heart Rate (HR), Blood Oxygen Level (SpO2) and MOCA INDEX (MI). MI is measured on a simple, color-coded, 1-5 scale – indicating: Low, Ideal, Raised, High or Very High; and is a easy to understand way to monitor how your blood flow is and thus how your blood pressure is doing. Measuring your heart rate regularly can be useful for monitoring your fitness. As an asthmatic, when I catch a bad cold, it is useful for me to be able to monitor my SpO2 at home as if I see it decreasing it is a sign I should go and see my doctor.
Each time you measure your cardiovascular function with the MOCAheart all 3 measures are recorded, and you can also add a note about what circumstances you measured in. You can view all your past readings graphically by the day, week, month or year to see trends and high and low values.
I really liked how quick and easy it is to use, and the simple scale of the MOCA Index makes it very easy to know when to go see your doctor for further evaluation. I love that is is small and light enough to carry in your pocket, making it really easy to take with you even when you are away from home at work or on vacation.
There are plenty of home blood pressure monitoring kits on the market, but I think many people don’t use them regularly because they can be cumbersome and awkward to use. MOCAheart is really small, discreet, easy to carry with you and quick and easy to use, so I hope that it can overcome a barrier for people in monitoring their cardiovascular health at home.
I would recommend MOCAheart for anyone who wants a quick and easy way to monitor their cardiovascular health at home.
