What we love…

comprehensive math app which encourages kids to sequentially learn and demonstrate mastery of skills with a year’s worth of content in one app

What we’d love to see…

ability to create multiple kids per grade level of content, a whiteboard space to “draw” out answers to specific problems that need to be reworked

GO Math! GO – Fun learning for grades K, 1st & 2ndGO Math! GO – Fun learning for grades K, 1st & 2nd by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is a universal app for iOS which features both free and paid content for math from K, 1st and 2nd grade.  The premium content is a one time purchase of $14.99 USD per grade level, or you can buy all three levels at a discounted rate of $34.99, a $10 savings.  The app can be played across multiple devices with the same iTunes account and requires a web login to create an account.  For purposes of the review, I looked at the 2nd grade level.  This features number concepts, numbers to 1,000, addition/subtraction, 2 digit subtraction, 2 digit addition, 3 digital addition and subtraction, money and time, length, data and graphs as well as geometry and fractions.  The free version of the app includes one full lesson set so you can try it to decide if it is a good fit for your child.  You must create an account on Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to track your child’s progress and login to a website to see their progress.  You can also read FAQ’s on their website.

As you complete each type of lesson, you earn stars to show completion.  You must complete activities in sequence so you can’t compare numbers before you demonstrate that you can group 10’s as 100’s.  First you try the skill and then after completing that (where you can rework problems) you are moved into the mastery where you must complete a math problem to demonstrate mastery.

I liked that the lessons were split up by concept type and correlated with what my son was doing in his second grade class.  I also liked that you could try the problem first and then rework it as needed until you got to the mastery. My son was recently home for a period of time after a procedure and I loved that he could go into the app to practice his math skills using my iPad and only progress as he mastered specific skills.

In terms of enhancements, I’d like to see a multi-profile option especially if you have more than one child, currently even with an account you can only have one child per grade level of content. If you get a problem wrong, the app encourages you do a drawing to demonstrate that you understand the concept, however, you must do this separately on a piece of paper rather than within the app.  It would be nice to have a “whiteboard” space to do this so you don’t need extra “tools”.

The app is self contained, it does not require internet access to use and there are no external links other than the ones for “managing” the profiles, “more apps” and “restore”.

Overall, I really liked the app and the amount of content that was provided.  The app itself is free and premium content is done via an in-app purchase or IAP which I detail below.  I liked that the content was mostly self-directed and I could see how my son was progressing via use in the app.  It provides a nice companion for my son to practice math skills along with skills related to #commoncore.

Alison, the American iMum is from Massachusetts. She lives there with her two sons and husband. In their spare time, they enjoy playing outside, enjoying nature and of course testing apps and fantastic products on their devices. My older son loves technology and loves testing out the “latest and newest” apps and tech. I love sharing information about apps and products with others to help them make decisions without feeling overwhelmed with all of the choices.
