What we love…

Museum theme that exposes children to history and the arts, multi-user capabilities, ability to change skill setting anytime during the game

What we’d love to see…

Short description for each museum piece

Summary

A top notch app that gives children plenty of opportunites to sharpen their math skills while having fun.

Our Rating

Mystery Math Museum is an excellent follow up to Artgig Apps’ Mystery Math Town.  In Mystery Math Town, children solved addition, subtraction, and multiplication problems while searching houses and mansions for coins and missing fireflies.  This time, along with addition, subtraction, and multiplication, they will also be solving division problems while searching different museums for coins and missing dragonflies.

I really like the museum theme because it introduces and exposes children to history and the arts.  They have an art, music, western, ancient culture, sports, prehistoric, and space museums.  Children are sure to be entertained by all the items they see in the museums.  Clicking on museum items will bring up an audio related to the particular piece.  I like this feature specially in the music museum since it helps children learn what the instruments sound like.  I think it would be great if, in the future, clicking in museum items would also bring up a short description of the item.  Imagine what amazing educational value it adds if, say, when you click on a piano you get a pop-up that shows the type and name of the musical instrument; or when you click on a painting, you get a description that includes the name, artist, time period, and medium used for the piece.

Other things I like in Mystery Math Museum include the ability to create accounts for multiple users, the ease of setting skill levels before and anytime during game play, the option to include tally marks and dice.  The game play is simple to understand, a lot of fun, and gives children so many opportunities to sharpen their math skills.  They will have to go through each museum once to find the dragonflies and several times more to find coins that will earn them paintings for their own gallery.

Mystery Math Museum is a top notch app for developing mathematical skills that children will absolutely enjoy.  I highly recommend it!

What we love…

huge amount of content allows children to practice areas that they may need to work on and a great app to prevent summertime skills loss

What we’d love to see…

a better parent lock to prevent in inadvertent in-app purchases; the “bomb” game needs tweaking to be more child friendly

Summary

Huge amount of educational content with the in-app purchase and the ability to try before you buy ensures the app will be a good fit for your child.

Our Rating

DoodleMath (Elementary Math)DoodleMath (Elementary Math) by EZ Education LTD is a universal app designed for iOS to help your children either sharpen their math skills, maintain them during the summer or learn new skills.  The app begins with an assessment of your child and their understanding of math skills.  The assessment provides a wide range of questions from telling time, to fractions, to addition and subtraction problems allowing the app to understand which skills need to be worked on the most.  It provides feedback during the assessment if the question is interpreted wrongly allowing you to do it again.  The app will provide feedback to parents and allow them to have reports emailed them on a weekly basis with progress. After the assessment is completed a customized program is set for your child with a variety of problems.  Upon answering correctly, your child is awarded a star.  If the child answers incorrectly a buzzer sounds and if they repeatedly get it wrong the question is skipped and you move on to the next one.  Upon successful completion of each set of ten questions, you are provided with a score, accuracy as well as time spent.  There is no timer for the questions, meaning that your child can spend more time on it as necessary to determine the correct answer.   To learn more about the developers and how the app came to be, check out our developer interview with Tom and Nicola.

I think this app provides a lot of content for the $8.99 in app purchase when you consider the cost of a tutor or even workbooks during elementary school.  The doodle stars provide positive reinforcement to your child and the “help” button allows them to have access to targeted help for each type of question.    The questions are engaging and are easy to mix up so that a child doesn’t answer too many of one type and can continue to practice.  This is a great supplement to summertime learning as well as helping your child after completing their traditional homework as it provides instant reinforcement on progress within the app.  After completing each set of math problems children earn doodle stars which can be used to buy accessories for their pets which are chosen at the beginning of the app.  The accessories range from sunglasses, to hats and hair and even shoes.    There is also a doodle section that allows your child to draw free hand in the app as well after completing their work.  I also liked that the problems had different ways to answer it ranging from selecting an object (in fractions), to sorting from smallest to largest, drawing a line from a problem to an answer.  This allows your child to experience problems in a variety of different formats.

In terms of enhancements – I would like to see the in-app purchase protected by a child lock in the parents section after the pin number is set so that  children can not purchase the app in error (it’s a $8.99 In-app purchase for the full program) and additional students are $7.99 in app purchases.  The parent pages also contain external links to Facebook, Twitter and the Internet but are only accessible after setting a four digit pin number.  Parents can also adjust the program in this section to make it harder and easier for children to practice in the parent setting as well.    I did find that the clocks especially were a bit sensitive to touch and if you accidentally double tapped – you had to clear the entire page before being able to continue on.  I would also really like it if the questions were read out loud for children as an option- although at this age we can expect them to be reading.  This setting would be a helpful one in the parent portal.    Parents should have a pencil and scratch paper accessible during the assessment as not all of the problems have an area for your child to write down the math problem and work it out longhand – it would be a great enhancement in the future to have a “scratch paper” option.  The math explosion portion of the app depicts bombs within it and although they are designed to look like cartoons I do not feel they are appropriate for the app and I think the developer should make them more child friendly.  I would also like to see the parent dashboard NOT pop up when you open the app for the first time as sometimes kids open apps before the parents do.  I would also love it if you could transfer the learning program from an iPad to an iPhone while in progress without having to take the assessment a second time.

Bottom line – lots of content within the app to allow your children to learn and refine their math skills.  The app allows you to “try before you buy” to ensure that it will be a good fit for your family before you make the $8.99 in app purchase for your child.  I had fun testing out this app and putting my own math skills to the test.  The app will provide enjoyment as well as education for your child.  This app is a great alternative to static worksheets and the ability to customize the program to your child’s needs means that it will grow with your child and their skills!

What we love…

Fantastic graphics, interaction and open ended creative play

What we’d love to see…

the ability to style animals hair, change their clothes into more choices  and more mini games

Summary

Open ended play that allows children to play beauty salon; appeals to both boys and girls

Our Rating

Dr. Panda's Beauty Salon Dr Panda Beauty Salon by Dr Panda Games allows your child to immerse themselves into a spa experience where they pamper the pets and do a bunch of great mini games.  The app allows for open ended creative play and has some great hidden elements within to unlock.  This universal app had wide appeal with our testers, both boys and girls who enjoyed playing with the virtual spa.  The app features 13 mini games along with three floors of fun!  Be sure to check out their other apps including: Dr. Panda SupermarketDr. Panda Teach MeDr. Panda HospitalDr. Panda Veggie GardenDr. Panda’s DaycareDr. Panda Restaurant,  There are no external links outside of the parent’s section, no in app purchases or advertising within the app.

My son even enjoyed tapping on the pictures on the walls, finding the hidden nail polish which means your next client automatically gets nail polish and a pedicure as well as the smaller features like the vibrating chairs, magazines and variety of tasks needed to play the app.  The waiting room was fun as the customers entered – similar to other Dr. Panda apps and we loved listening to the music, reading magazines and sipping tea.  It was fun once the customers were upstairs in the chairs – to either vibrate the chairs or turn them into something else!   The open ended creative play in the app means that you can play for moments or hours – and still explore all of the different choices while having fun without making the app feel too repetitive – even for a parent.  Painting on the nail polish is a good fine motor skill as you can paint by direction and then add gems and other items to the polish to make the toes pretty.  I also loved the hidden mini games which can be found in the video below – with a few of my favorites.   We really loved the graphics in the app and found the mini games entertaining.    I also really liked the child lock as it requires you to tap on the lock a number of times in a random pattern in order to get into it meaning that it is harder for kids to get in by mistake!

In terms of enhancements, I’d love to see the option to do more with the animals hair – including hats and other items as well as dressing up in fancy clothes.  Currently after you finish each client they appear in their own clothes but it would be fun to dress them up yourself.  I also found that at times the necklace was a bit finicky with the beads, but that could have just been related to the placement of the beads.

What we love…

the spyglass and various interactive elements especially the treasure hunt for objects

What we’d love to see…

the pages take up the entire screen rather than having a border around them as well as more transparency on the in-app purchases as well as the ability to record the soundtrack yourself.

Summary

A wonderful rendition of a very classic storybook with the exception of the size of the pages.  The interactive elements, spy glass hunt for objects as well as the story are beautifully done.  This app is geared toward very young children through late preschool.

Goodnight MoonIn the Great Green Room, there was a little boy and a red balloon has lulled millions of children to sleep since it was introduced 65 years ago.  Goodnight Moon, a classic story for children of all ages,  has been adapted to a universal app for iOS by Loud Crow and features interactive elements that bring the storybook to life in the great green room.  Children can touch, swipe or title the screen to help the fire crackle, cow jumping over the moon,  the old lady whispering hush, fading lights and more.  The app features a “read it to me”, autoplay and a read it to myself option.  The optional piano music can be turned on and off as you wish within the story.

Our family loved this digital rendition of the book, my son loved that it said his name and was personalized for him.  He also enjoyed using the spyglass to find all of the objects on the pages for the treasure hunt at the end as well as the animations, hidden interactions and the ability to touch all of the objects.  The app features word-highlighting, touchable words and narration for early and emerging readers who enjoy hearing the story or reading it themselves.  His favorite animation was, the little old lady whispering “hush” and hearing goodnight noises everywhere.  My son really enjoys the app as he can “read by himself” and works to identify the words and letters he knows in the story from hearing it so many times since he was a young child.

We would like to see the pages taking up the entire screen on any device but especially the iPad, rather than being in the small book format with the border and having so much unused space when the pages could be larger.   I do think that the app description should notate that in-app purchases are available on the front page of the storybook.  I would also love it if you were able to record your own soundtrack so you could read the story to your child even when you were not there.

Screenshot

Note: This app includes in-app purchases on the front page which include an ABC book and a 123 book which are available at an additional cost.  I did purchase these as I loved the book and wanted my son to be able to play with the additional elements.  I do think there should be a way to turn these off as it was not clearly noted in the iTunes description that in-app purchases were available on the front page.

A wonderful rendition of a very classic storybook with the exception of the size of the pages.  The interactive elements, spy glass hunt for objects as well as the story are beautifully done.  This app is geared toward very young children through late preschool.

The app is currently on sale for 40% off from $4.99 so if you enjoyed the book as much as I do, I would encourage you to get it for your child, but do be aware of the in-app purchases.
