Construction truck theme, incorporation of a bedtime routine; story changes pace, light dims and lullaby plays as bedtime nears
What we’d love to see…
Interactions only working once narration complete, ability to hide games at bedtime, narration in name matching game.
Nighty Night Construction Trucks is a sweet and simple construction themed bedtime story. It’s truck theme is sure to be a hit with many young children, and it has a nice calm, peaceful feel to it, making it a great bedtime story for the under 5s.
Nighty Night Construction Trucks is the 4th Book app for young children from author Alexis Purcell. Her previous book apps are: The Turkey who Forgot How to Gobble; Twinkle, Twinkle Hear My Prayers and Twinkle, Twinkle Nighty Night. Nighty Night Construction Trucks is a sweet and simple bedtime story for little truck lovers, and includes ‘read by myself’ and ‘read to me’ options, with word highlighting as it is read. Page turning is via tapping on a arrow and a page navigation guide makes it easy to revisit favorite pages. All external links are in a locked parents area at the end of the book and are accessed via division questions.
The story is told with simple rhyming verse and bright, cheerful, colorful, cartoon – style illustrations. The background music can be switched off independently, but does a nice job of setting the mood- becoming more calm and soothing later in the story as the trucks get ready for bed. Each page has interactive elements which let the child see how the trucks work and hear the sounds they make when working, sparkles guide the child to find all the interactions. The interactions are fun and relevant to the story, but I’d like to see them only work after the narration is finished on each page, so the child isn’t distracted.
The construction trucks are busy at work all day building a school, and by the end of the day they are tired out and ready for bed. The child can help Max the construction worker with the bedtime routine for the trucks and their pet kitty. The trucks are washed and cleaned, tires pumped and fuel tanks refilled so they will be ready for work in the morning. The cat has some milk before settling down to sleep with the trucks. The sky gradually darkens and in the background a lullaby plays. In my favorite scene the child gets to put the trucks to bed one by one learning the truck names as they go, putting a blanket on the excavator and a nightcap on the dump truck. Max locks the gate and turns out the light as the trucks and kitty snore away.
Many young boys and girls love playing with construction trucks and are sure to love this construction – themed bedtime story. It is a very simple, gentle book with a calming feel just right for bedtime. As a bonus it includes a memory match game with the trucks from the story and a “match the truck with the name” game. With the match the name game the name is only written I’d like to have it spoken if the written name is touched. The games are a nice bonus but I would like an option to hide them when reading the story at bedtime.
Overall, this is a sweet and simple construction themed bedtime story. It’s truck theme is sure to be a hit with many young children, and it has a nice calm, peaceful feel to it making it a great bedtime story for the under 5s.

The app lets you create your own version of the story by letting you interact via touch points, bilingual storybook.
What we’d love to see…
A few hints showing where the touch points are in the story, a “Next button” instead of swiping to turn pages and word highlighting as it is read.
This app has great graphics, voices and the interactive aspect of the storybook makes it a fun storybook app to read and play with.
A Shark Knocked On The Door by Mighty Yeti is an interactive storybook app in both English and Spanish. It is designed for both iPhone and iPad for kids aged 5 and under. Mighty Yeti is a Half Moon Bay, California – based animation studio dedicated to telling stories in exciting new ways. Mighty Yeti have released another storybook called ‘Mr. Cupcake has the Sprinkles’, which we recently reviewed, and are currently working on two more.
This storybook app is a fun and ‘hands-on’ reading adventure of a boy and his grandmother who decide to make a boat and float it down the gutter one rainy evening. After the boat is lost down the drain, the little boy and his grandmother go home and minutes later find a shark knocking on their front door, and then the fun really begins!
The app can either read the story in English or Spanish or if the reader prefers, they can choose to read it to themselves with the text available in either language. The beauty about this app is that it has over 100+ reader touch elements throughout the storybook which make the story a ‘hands-on’ and fun experience.
We liked that we can interact with the app and animate characters and objects to involve us with the story. It is a fun and quirky story that little ones will find amusing. The app has great graphics and sound and we like how the little boy tells the story with rhymes. My daughter loves looking for elements to click on the page and parts that make funny sounds. Her favourite part of the story takes place under the sea where she can touch whales, seals and fish and hear the noises they make. She also finds the shark’s voice amusing.
We would like to see a few ‘hints’ on each page of the storybook to help little ones find the touch points as well as a ‘Next’ button at the bottom of each page as we find it makes it easier for little ones to touch buttons rather than swipe pages. We would also like to see word highlighting as it is read.
The app has a page navigation menu you can select while reading the story which lets you select or skip pages. It also allows you to go back to the main menu. The app has a settings page where you can change the language spoken to English or Spanish as well as a help and credits page. It also has a ‘More from Mighty Yeti’ page where other titles are mentioned (without the in-app purchase option). There are no in-app purchases or third party ads in this unlocked app which makes it a safe app for little ones to use.
Overall we liked this quirky animated storybook and would recommend it. My little one really enjoys this ‘hands on’ app as it incorporates two things she loves: reading and playing!

Fun with a purpose- stories, games and activities that have children learning whilst having fun
What we’d love to see…
Ability to zoom in in hidden object pictures, more refined drawing tools, word highlighting in all the stories.
True to the Highlights theme the All About books and apps are fun with a purpose – children get to practice their observation skills, visual discrimination, fine motor skills, reading and listening skills whilst having fun with games and stories.
Highlights Magazine for kids has been an American staple for generations. It is still available as a print magazine subscription and is now also available in digital form. The publishers of Highlights have recently released a series of books, in both print and digital versions that include all the Highlights favorite sections but concentrate on a theme- these are the Highlights “All About” books. There are All About books with seasonal themes- Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter, and also a variety of other themes including Camping, Pets and Transportation. The books are designed for children from 4+. I tested out the print and digital versions of the All About Spring and All About Fall books.
In digital format there is a free Highlights: All About app which includes the full version of All About Fall, other All About Books can be unlocked with in-app purchases- currently $1.99 per book. You can order the print versions from the Highlights website a set of 4 Season All About books is $19.98 and includes codes to unlock the digital versions for free. The print books are 24 pages with soft covers and measure approximately 8″x 11″.
The app is divided into 3 sections:
There are a variety of activities in the puzzle section including 3 hidden object puzzles ( 1 is in the print book), a 12-piece jigsaw puzzle (based on the Haiku that is in the print book), maze, matching game and a “That’s Silly” picture. I did find that the hidden objects and silly things were harder to spot in the digital edition, in the print book they are a double page spread over two 8″x 11″ pages, and much smaller on the iPad or iPad mini screen. I would love to see the iPad’s capability used more here by adding the option to pinch and zoom so the child can explore the scene in more detail and more easily find the details than can be easy to miss on the smaller screen.
There are 4 stories in the reading section. Two stories are presented in a traditional multi-page story with narration and word highlighting as the story is read, one of these is in the print book the other is a bonus story. There is an option to record your own narration to accompany the stories. The third story is presented as a short animated video with the story narrated, the words show on the screen as the story is read but there is no word highlighting as it is read. The fourth story appears in the print version with pictures replacing some of the words, in the digital version the child gets to first place the pictures in the right spots of the text (the words are written both under the picture and in the text box so they can match them). Once all the pictures in are in correct locations the story is read with word highlighting.
This section includes 2 “Brain Play” videos, 3 pictures to draw and an action rhyme to act out.
The Brain Play ideas have a similar format to the ones in the print book, but different topics – each video shows a group of children answering a question e.g. “What Class Would You Like to See Offered in Schools?”
The action rhyme is a short poem with actions and is the same as the one in the print version. In a nice twist the digital version lets the child record a short video of themselves acting out the rhyme as they see and hear the rhyme and see a child acting it out.
With the drawing activities the child is given a background, some stickers and colored pencils and asked to draw a picture on a theme e.g. “what is your favorite activity in the fall?” Each of the 3 pictures has a different background. The drawing tools are very simple, it would be nice to see some extra features added such as different size pencil tips and the ability to re-size stickers.
True to the Highlights theme the All About books and apps are fun with a purpose – children get to practice their observation skills, visual discrimination, fine motor skills, reading and listening skills whilst having fun with games and stories. Most of the content is the same in the print and digital editions but there is some bonus content in the digital version and the addition of some videos and animation. There are a few places where I would like to see the iPad’s capability used more fully, with addition of the ability to zoom in the hidden object and “that’s silly” pictures, more refined art tools in the drawing sections, and the addition of narration to the story video. This app does contain in-app purchases, and un-purchased books are visible on the bookshelf, if the “buy” button is pressed a maths question must be answered correctly before the app store can be accessed.
If you are a fan of Highlights for Children magazine I would definitely recommend checking out the Highlights: All About App – you will get the All About Fall book for free, and the other books are a good value at $1.99 each.
There is so much a child can learn from the Old MacDonald Had a Farm nursery rhyme. It uses simple words and features kids’ favorite farm animals. Young children can learn the names of the animals and the sounds that the animals make, and they are also introduced to the concept of here, there and everywhere. How fun it would be if kids can sing and play along with the nursery rhyme as it is sung.
What we love…
Brilliant 3D animations and interesting details in each interactive scene.
What we’d love to see…
Introduction of vocabulary words.
A super cute and unusual interactive farm animal app featuring the nursery rhyme, Old MacDonald had a Farm.
Here is an app that allows your kids to do just that and it’s sure to put a smile on their faces as they play with it. With brilliant 3D animations and adorable animals to play with, Old MacDonald Sing&Play by ChocChip is a cute and fun app that will appeal to all young children. The app is free to download and kids can play with the pigs for free, and get 4 additional animals with an in-app purchase of $1.99.
Once an animal is picked from the play section, kids will be greeted with the cute sight of the animal dancing to the Old MacDonald tune. Tap the animal and they will thrilled to see it come close to the screen as if to sniff the kids who are visiting the farm. My youngest loved that and would even do the same!
This app was designed purely for the kids’ enjoyment. There are no pop-up vocabulary words as kids interact with the app but there are lots of fun things that they can do with the animals. Each animal is found in a different part of the farm and each of the 5 scenes offers 10 interactive spots for kids to discover. Your kids will be captivated by the cute actions of the lovable and playful animals as they make the pig slide in the mud, the cow jump over the moon, the horse gallop over fences, the duck dive into the pond, the cat kick a ball of yarn and more!
What I like about this app is that there is something interesting in each scene that will prompt curious kids to ask what they are. You don’t normally find a water wheel,
submarine and milking machine in a kids app but this app has them and more. There are also silly stuff like the cow being kidnapped by a UFO! These are just some of the surprises that your kids can activate in the app. Just like the nursery rhyme itself, this app offers lots of learning opportunities for language development and knowledge acquisition. It would be ideal to be able to learn some key words from the app.
An Old MacDonald App is an essential app in any toddler and preschooler’s app library, and Old MacDonald Sing&Play by ChocChip is definitely one that you should check out first.
