immersive science based exploration better than any other science type app we have recently tested
What we’d love to see…
I would love to see more information for parents when they first launch the app explaining how they can use it with their kids. I would love to see more earth science and a fuller explanation of each of the contents or even a dig in the individual planets.
This is the best science app covering these topics I have ever tested with my kids!
Tappity Grade K-4 Science for Kids is a subscription based app for iOS that features an immersive experience into a variety of science topics. The app is designed for children from kindergarten through grade four. My preschooler loved the app as well – although he had a shorter attention span. New content is being constantly added and ranges from Oceans to planets to evolution and more. There is even a monthly mystery. Topics are: new content, adventures, space, nature, animals, dinosaurs and mini mysteries. The narration is in native English and is very clear and easy to understand.
The app starts with an adventure you choose – my kids especially liked the space adventure where you traveled through space, landed on the moon, had lunch (broccoli or ice cream) and then even were able to control the weather on Venus. Each adventure is narrated and allows you to touch, explore, hear the narration and impressively learn while using the app without kids knowing it! Navigation is simple, kids tap, twist, orbit and touch arrows when they are done with specific adventures. The app uses actual video footage rather than animated characters or computer animations.
As a mom, I loved the fun facts in each adventure as well as the animations – which felt so real like the coral reef with the fish swimming and more. Kids could also pop up the text at the bottom to read it as well. In the space adventure, watching my kids explore the various orbits and learning about the planets was so much more fun than I remember it being when I learned in a textbook in the classroom. I also appreciated that I knew each lesson would take approximately x number of minutes which gave me time to prep dinner or pack lunches instead of having to worry about my kids mindlessly watching television. The app encourages thinking and problem solving which are both very important in our current school curriculum. It also allows for exploration which means that kids can look around, explore and truly start to understand what they are learning. As a supplement, after we reviewed the space portion of Tappity we went to a local museum that was having a space exhibit – I was amazed at how much my kids remembered! It provided multi-sensory learning with app guides, clear explanations. You can download the adventures so no wi-fi is needed meaning that you can take the adventures with you. The music is fun and catchy. At the end you return home and there is a quick recap of what you learned. It encourages kids to go beyond the app and learn. At the end kids can take a photo to remember their adventure.
In terms of enhancements, I would love to see more information for parents when they first launch the app explaining how they can use it with their kids. I would love to see more earth science and a fuller explanation of each of the contents or even a dig in the individual planets.
The app is paid via in-app purchase via subscription, if you are like me, a lifetime subscription is a good buy! Prices are below and are current as of the time of this review in USD. Plans: $2.99/month, $14.99/year, and $49.99 (lifetime)
Both my boys loved this app and I loved that they were getting educational content and learning about science. They were well engaged and learning as well as retaining the content to be able to explain it. This is the best science app covering these topics I have ever tested with my kids! Perfect for homeschoolers, regular parents and even just curious kids. I can’t wait to test it with my Cub Scouts as well!
Activities that help develop early science thinkers.
What we’d love to see…
A harvesting step to complete the plant life cycle and parents’ guide.
This is a fun app that stimulates preschoolers’ curiosity to find out how nature works.
Toddler & Kids Learning Games by Clapenjoy SRL is the perfect companion app for curious preschoolers to discover the wonders of nature that are all around them. What they learn in the app can be easily linked to what they observe in the real world.
There are 4 nature-based learning activities in the app. Through these activities, kids imagine what happens when temperature changes, grow their own vegetables and fruits, witness the transformation of a caterpillar to a butterfly and feed baby birds. They also learn about the life cycle of plants, butterflies and birds, and what is needed for healthy growth. All these information is presented in cute animation.
Besides the age-appropriate educational content, I like that the app frequently prompts young learners to think about what item or action is needed next. You can talk about the 3 options given and guide your child’s thinking process in choosing the correct option. As the answer options change at every play session, you can have different discussions deliberating and explaining why some answers are good choices and why others are not.
Another point that I like is that there are many opportunities for children to make decisions while playing the app e.g. which outfit to wear, what vegetables to plant, which fancy watering can to use, which fruit tree to grow and what color should the butterfly be.
This app is easy for young children to navigate, with prompts given when they are stuck. Players proceed from one learning section to the next seamlessly and there is no need for instructions. Simple finger actions like tapping, dragging and rubbing are all that is needed to activate a response from the app. There is also no time limit or score keeping in the activities.
In addition to the nature-based educational games, kids can also have fun with puzzles, memory match games and coloring pages that are based on the nature activities.
Digital puzzles take away the frustrations that some younger children experience when they don’t have the fine-motor skills to manipulate a physical puzzle yet. With digital puzzles, children continue to reap the benefits of putting together a puzzle like hand-eye coordination and problem-solving skills . Each puzzle in this app starts with 4 pieces. It gets more difficult with increasing number of pieces. But you can change the level of difficulty at any time by tapping on the ‘+’ and ‘-‘ on-screen buttons. In total, there are 30 puzzles of varying difficulty levels in the app to be solved.
The 24 memory cards games included in the app are also presented in increasing levels of difficulty, from 4 to 12 cards per set. Similarly, you can adjust the number of cards in each game. The memory cards are randomly generated and players get a different set of cards each time they play. These games are great for concentration and improving memory.
Coloring activities are always popular with preschoolers and having some sessions on digital coloring pages that are easier to complete can help kids achieve success and boost their self-esteem (especially when you keep a screenshot of their masterpiece). The 11 coloring pages in this app come with 4 coloring tools, an eraser and 13 color options. The paint brush, crayons and color pencils are standard offerings but the rub-and-color magic wand will be great for younger kids.
The app is free to download and kids can play with the vegetable garden activity right away. The free app also comes with a puzzle, a memory card game and a coloring page for your child to try. The other 3 nature-based activities can be unlocked with an in-app-purchase (IAP) of $1.99 . The developer keeps the app kids-friendly by giving users the option to disable the IAP from within the parent’s section. You can also turn off the background music and sound effects (like the rabbit’s springy hopping sounds) from the parent’s section. It would be great if this section can also provide parents with the key learning points that they can highlight to their children in each of the learning activities.
Nevertheless, Toddler & Kids Learning Games is still a standout among the very few early science apps that are available in the App Store for the preschool age group. It encourages young learners to ask questions about how nature works and to find their own answers. It should be renamed to reflect its area of focus. Download the free app and check it out!

fun accessible #stem themed app that teaches colors with a space perfect for toddlers or those learning colors
What we’d love to see…
a sticker type game or perhaps painting with colors on a space themed background, a page where each Wootzy said their color
Fun #stem themed app that encourages kids to learn colors using a space theme. Rhythmic and engaging for my toddler.
STEM Storiez – Wootzy Col0rs by Zyrobotics is a universal app for iOS which features #stem learning. The app features science, technology, engineering, and math skills and also is usable with the Zumo bluetooth turtle for those with accessibility challenges. The app features a variety Wootzys in different colors each with a different space themed interactive background. The stories feature narration, voice/music, the ability to “type out e-book text” which means text appears as is it read. Each of these can be toggled in the settings, and navigation is at the bottom of each page via arrows. The app can be used via the touchscreen on your iPad/iPhone or via a play stylus as well as the buttons of the touch screen Zumo turtle. Each time you touch the screen an interactive element is triggered like the Wootzy moving, a musical sound, or animation. The app can use a stylus, however, I reviewed it on the iPad as well as with Zumo Turtle.
One of my favorite things about the app was the level of customization that you can do. I loved that you can remove/add sounds as well as change the size of the text on the screen. The story is interactive and engaging for kids with on device learning. Each color is introduced on a different page and the user is encouraged to say the name of the color. My toddler loved the rhythmic sound of the story with “what planet is this? What Wootzy lives here” and was able to repeat the text while we practiced his colors. I also liked that you could turn on and off the voice/music so I could read it to my son and we could then “practice” what color is this? Using the Zumo turtle connected via Bluetooth, my toddler was in control. I loved that he could tap on the turtle to move the pages back and forth because at times the arrows were a bit hard for him to navigate.
In terms of improvements, I would like to see a fun activity at the end of the app after the story is completed to practice colors. It could be painting, or stickers with the items from each page which would engage kids and also allow them to demonstrate that they understood the colors. I’d also like to see a page that featured all of the colors where you could tap on each Wootzy to hear them say their color.
There are no-in app purchases or advertisments, and the parental area is gated with a math problem. The settings area does not have a parental gate, but there are no external links, you can simply turn on and off the various items. Fun #stem themed app that encourages kids to learn colors using a space theme. Rhythmic and engaging for my toddler.
beautiful graphics, multiplayer option, a “redo” button in case you get stuck with a challenge and multiple different types of science taught
What we’d love to see…
a demo on the first level of each “new” castle in the easy mode
I love that the app teaches #stem and #commoncore and encourages kids to play and learn at the same time. I never thought teaching a child physics could be so fun!
Thinkrolls: Kings & Queens by AVOKIDDO is a universal app for iOS that uses creative thinking, problem solving and logic skills to move to the next level. This action packed multiplayer app contains 228 levels of play and works well for both younger and older children (and adults!) The premise of the app is fairly straighforward, create a character and roll them through the obstacles to capture the magic key. Each level gets harder with slightly harder obstacles and more difficult challenges. There are six different castles to complete which I will describe below.
● Gear & Rack: combine gears with racks to create ladders & conveyor belts
● Chest & Bridge: fill gaps and collapse swaying bridges to clear the way
● Crocodile & Harp: use the harp to lull the crocodile to sleep
● Ghost & Mirror: shift the mirror to eliminate the ghost with reflected light
● Hatch & Lever: switch the lever to open and close hatches
● Flying Potion: unleash the magic potion to defy gravity and fly to the finish
Each of the castles has a “redo” button in case you get stuck within the level and can’t progress on. The castles have beautiful artwork with amazing detail down to the strings on the harp which is used to lull the crocodile to sleep. In each of the castles, as you complete each challenge you unlock the next level which also unlocks additional items that you can dress your character with. Within the app when you tap the “gear” at the top of the screen you can choose the player, type of levels which are “easy” for kids aged 5-8 and “hard” for kids aged 8+. For purposes of the review, we tested the app on “easy” mode with my 8 year old. You can also toggle on/off the in-game music and select the language.
I loved how the app encouraged my son to problem solve to master each level – there were a few times when he brought me the iPad because he couldn’t figure out the challenge the first time like using the harp to put the crocodile to sleep. As the levels got harder, he got better at problem solving and I loved how he realized that if he didn’t “solve” it the first time he could try different things until he was able to do so. I love the life skill here too because it showed him that even if we have regular challenges in life maybe the traditional way we approached the problem, might not always be the solution. The animations within the app ranging from the crocodile mouth to the use of reflection with the ghost & mirror were amazing and I could really tell that AVOKIDDO spent a lot of time testing and perfecting the app to ensure things worked well and as planned. I definitely also noticed that my son used a lot of great words to describe all the things he was learning to explain the science concepts – which we also discussed. I never imagined physics could be so fun for an 8 year old and that he would understand the concepts after just playing with the app to master each of the levels! Each of the levels targets a specific type of skill like gravity, force, joints or even simple machines and gets progressively harder as you progress within the app. As a mom, I loved that I could play with the app using my own player to play with castles that were more suited to my level compared to my son’s.
In terms of future enhancements, there were a few times my son got stuck and since I wasn’t “playing along” the entire time I had to play through the level a few times to figure it out. Perhaps a tutorial the first time you are presented with a new type of castle or object might be helpful for younger players on the “easy” mode.
Overall, this is a fantastic app that AVOKIDDO has made, every time I test one of their apps I think they can’t possibly top it, but each time I am surprised with the new ways them come up with to play. I love that the app teaches #stem and #commoncore and encourages kids to play and learn at the same time. The app has a parental protected area with a parental gate, no banner ads, no 3rd party ads and is COPPA compliant. There are no-in app purchases. This would be a great app to use over the upcoming holidays because it’s not a “play once and done” especially for those that have a long trip!
