Happy Easter, Little Critter by Oceanhouse Media – Review

What we love…

The highlighted text and attention to story as opposed to interactivity for the sake of having it included.

What we’d love to see…

I think if you like classic storytelling, this is the app for you. If you like flashy animations and video clips, then look elsewhere. I personally enjoy this presentation and wouldn’t change a thing.

Summary

Happy Easter, Little Critter will become an annual visitor on our family’s iOS devices to help set the mood for Easter and reinforce reading skills.

Our Rating

Happy Easter, Little CritterHappy Easter, Little Critter, written by Mercer Mayer and developed by Oceanhouse media, offers classic storytelling with features that add interest and learning opportunities. The app has professional child narration that can be turned on/off or customized with your own recording. Other features include; egg hunting (find 100!), find the mouse (17 to find), simple and unobtrusive interactivity within the story, highlighted text and picture to word association. Sound effects, app interactivity and “read alerts” can also be turned off or on. The story is about Little Critter and his family enjoying traditional Easter activities including getting an Easter basket, getting dressed for church, dying eggs, and egg hunt.

Little Critter is a favorite character at my house, so my kids quickly jumped in to the story. My 7-year-old son took to the app more than my youngest or oldest children because the egg-hunting game throughout the book was a challenge that really appealed to him. My 5-year-old was less interested because of the classic set-up of this app of pan and zoom animation as opposed to story characters brought to life, but still enjoyed the story. Oceanhouse media apps are the industry standard, as far as I am concerned, for book apps because they consistently compliment the stories with interactivity without overpowering them. I also love the highlighted text and picture to word association to reinforce learning to read.

This app is simple and cleanly made with a cute story from a favorite character. The only thing that bothered me was not being able to find all of the Easter eggs hidden!! My son found them and let me know I needed to try harder.

Overall, I think this is an app we will continue to visit each year as Easter approaches to help set the mood.

Brenda Shetland is the mother of three kids and a lover of educational apps and not-so-educational apps (she can usually find a good use for all of them!) She likes reading, laughing and not cleaning her house. Brenda has high standards, but a good heart and loves seeing apps improve because of good critiques. Although she writes under a pseudonym, everything else about her is real and she is very happy to help the amazing iMums!
