image

Grab this app if you have Peppa Pig fans at home! Not fans yet? Get it all the same if you have preschoolers! Peppa Pig : Golden Boots the app is just too fun (and educational) for your kids to miss out on! My youngest was very excited to play the app, peeping over my shoulder when I was checking it out and eventually taking over the iPad from me!

What we love…

Being able to play with Peppa Pig and her friends in their favorite games!

What we’d love to see…

More activities, the more the better.

Summary

This is a fun preschool educational game app featuring Peppa Pig characters that all kids will enjoy playing over and over again.

Since this app has been created in celebration of Peppa Pig’s first extended episode “The Golden Boots”, you naturally get to watch parts of the episode in the app. It opens with the familiar introduction to Peppa’s family that you see in all of their episodes. Then your child is invited to enter the play area and choose a favorite balloon as his/her profile icon. Up to 4 kids can create their own profiles and there is no need to key in names. Everything is easy for kids to manage by themselves.

As all fans know, the first rule of muddy puddle jumping is that you must wear your boots. In this episode, Peppa proudly shows off her special yellow boots that is made of ‘real plastic gold’, much to Suzy Sheep’s displeasure. While Peppa and her friends are indoors for orange juice, Mrs Duck comes along and walks off with Peppa’s golden boots. And so the quest to find Peppa’s golden boots begins.

First, kids are asked to make Peppa a new pair of boots for her day of adventures, using different color paints, patterns and stickers. Then they get to complete Peppa’s look with various outfits, head gears and a toy to hold. When Peppa is all set, kids can choose to play in one of the following 6 adventures:-

Dressing up Peppa! Kids will love to dress Peppa and see her appearing throughout the app in the look that they have created for her.

Find what’s hiding in the mud! Kids can wipe or tap around the muddy puddle to explore and find something hiding in the mud. But the highlight here is definitely making a Peppa Pig character jump in the mud.

Fly a rocket through space! This activity is the most challenging of the 6 games. Great eye tracking skills and hand eye coordination are needed to control the rocket through space following the path of stars while avoiding planets and collecting stars. There are 3 levels of play to cater to different abilities.

Shop at Miss Rabbit’s gift shop on the moon! Kids have to use their observation skills to help Peppa, George and Suzy search for the items requested and count them when the job is done.

Help Peppa make food and feed the ducks! This activity provides lots of opportunities for kids to exercise their fine motor skills and hand eye coordination – dragging, pouring and stirring ingredients, cutting the duck feed to smaller portions and dragging or flicking the food to the moving ducks. Kids will enjoy experimenting with different combinations of ingredients and see what happens to the food.

image

Sing along to the Muddy Puddles Song! The video is short but fun nonetheless.

image

Throughout the app, Peppa’s golden boots will appear and kids will have to quickly catch them in order to earn presents. They can play with their unwrapped presents anytime from their toy basket on the games menu.

image

Peppa Pig: Golden Boots is a lot of fun and giggles with games, animations and videos to educate and entertain. The activities are age appropriate and beneficial for kids’ cognitive development. There are also many opportunities for them to make decisions. This is an app that is easy and safe for preschoolers to navigate by themselves.

To all my fellow parents with young Peppa Pig fans, I say this app is a much better (and cheaper) buy than all the expensive Peppa Pig merchandise that we have been buying, so just get it already!

Presidents vs. Aliens™ By Freecloud Design, Inc. – Review & Giveaway

What we love…

educational, entertaining,

What we’d love to see…

perhaps a level selection, so that the youngest players can have less challenging obstacles.

Summary

A trivia and arcade game that makes learning about US presidents a lot of fun.

Our Rating

Have you been looking for an effective way for children to memorize presidential facts or to simply become more familiar with US Presidents?  If so, Presidents vs Aliens by Dan Russell-Pinson, creator of award winning apps Monster Physics, Stack the States, and Tower Math, may be just what you are looking for!

Presidents vs Aliens is a trivia and arcade game rolled into one.  The object of the game is to defeat the aliens that have gathered over some of America’s monuments. The only ones that can defeat them are the United Presidents, but they need your help.  In order to help them, you need to be able to recognize who the presidents are and know some facts about them.

Children who are just starting to learn about the United States presidents can start with the Learn option.  In index card style fashion, children learn about the presidents one at a time starting with George Washington and ending with the current president.  Along with a photograph, information in the index cards include the president’s years of service, their political party, their nickname, their vice presidents, their famous quotes, events they served in, and miscellaneous facts. I personally took a few presidents a day and taught my younger children a little bit about each of them, emphasizing name and photo recognition.  When they became more familiar with the presidents, I introduced them to the app and allowed them to scroll through the information in the Learn option.  The game is best enjoyed when children know enough to answer questions correctly.

To play the game, you first have to set up a profile for each child, entering their name and choosing an avatar.  The profile set-up process also allows you to customize their experience by selecting which questions would be asked in the game.  By default, all questions are selected.  Simply deselect the type of questions you don’t want to be asked.  For my younger ones, I only selected “identify president” which simply asks children to identify the presidents by their photograph.

iPad Screenshot 1

After creating their profile, the game begins.  Children will be shown a monument with aliens surrounding it.  The name of the monument can be found at the bottom of the screen.  Next a question and a choice of four presidents appear.  When the correct president is selected, the children get to fling them towards the aliens to hit them.  They can direct the president by tapping and dragging towards the direction they want the president to go.  An arrow appears to help guide them with this.  Once the president has been catapulted, they can help further guide the president’s movements by tilting the screen.  This is especially needed and helpful when there are obstacles they need to go through in order to hit the aliens. There will also be some fun power ups and special objects they can use to defeat the aliens.  The game is over once all the aliens have been hit and removed from the screen.  If children answer at least 50% of the questions correctly, they get to collect a coin with a president on it. After collecting 15 presidents, the bonus game Heads of State is unlocked, where they must identify correctly identify presidents by their photograph.  After collecting 30 presidents, the bonus game Executive Order is unlocked where they get to organize a set of presidents in the order they served.  Once unlocked, children can play the bonus games anytime they wish.

What I love most about Presidents vs Aliens is that it really works out your mind in different ways.  The learning portion provides new information to digest, the trivia portion exercises your memorization skills, and the arcade portion puts your strategizing, problem solving, and logical thinking skills to use.  This game is never boring.

Presidents vs Aliens is a very fun and goofy way to learn about US presidents.   My children enjoyed this game tremendously, as did I.  I noticed they were able to memorize facts more quickly.  The graphics and sounds are fantastic and I loved that the children get to know some of the monuments as well.  There were times the game did get too long for the little ones because the obstacles were more challenging, which means they needed to answer a ton of questions to get through the game.  They did eventually get through it and thankfully the obstacles weren’t always too challenging for them.  The older ones loved the challenge just fine.  Without a doubt, children and adults who want to learn more about US presidents will love this game.  I highly recommend it!

Dr. Panda’s Carnival by Dr. Panda Ltd – Review

iPad Screenshot 2

What we love…

fun carnival games and confetti graphics, the graphics were crisp and sharp and my son enjoyed most of the mini games

What we’d love to see…

more true carnival type games as well as the ability to pick the mini games which can be harder for younger kids

Summary

Overall, this is a fun carnival type of game, but I would like to see more games as well as the ability to turn on and off mini games and instructions.

Our Rating

Dr. Panda's CarnivalDr. Panda’s Carnival by Dr. Panda is another great addition to the Dr. Panda lineup of apps. This app features Dr. Panda with his friends the cat, hippo, pig, monkey and the dog playing with ten different activities including dress up, photographs, face painting as well as a snack making activity. This app does require some fine motor skills especially for the throwing the ball mini game and catching the ducks.

The app is one that features some of my favorite carnival games including: Ferris wheel, catch an object (duck), throwing a ball to knock down cans, a duck to ride, haunted house, fun house mirror, decorate your own lollipop, making popcorn, face painting, riding the paper boat, dress up the animals for a photo.

My son loved the carousel ride with the airplanes as well as the flying duck and catching the ducks with the fishing pole.  I liked the crisp graphics as well as the paper craft – which ranged from the flying confetti to the shaped balls for tossing and decorating the lollipop.  The graphics were crisp and creative.  I also loved that each time you opened the app the activities were slightly different – meaning there was a different game or food option to make which means that the game won’t get stale for children.  My son did enjoy collecting the stars for activities like catching ducks and getting the toys.

My son got very frustrated trying to knock down the cans using the paper balls. I tried it as well and although I have good fine motor coordination, I found it to be much easier on the iPad for this particular game versus my iPhone. My son also wished for more different dress up options at the fun house game.  He liked painting the animals faces, but wanted to dress them instead of just using a hat and glasses.  For example, my son wanted to color in the heart on the dog’s shirt but he couldn’t because you could only paint the face.    My son also wanted a color palette similar to what we had seen in the face painting for the spray on the lollipops.  One of my favorite suggestions he made was a “fireworks” show at the end after you completed the activities as the day was over – that’s always his favorite part of going to a carnival.  He also asked me why you couldn’t “eat” the food by licking the lollipop or eating the popcorn after you made it.   It would be nice to have a menu where you can pick specific mini games to ensure they are a good fit for your child.  I would like to see instructions for some of the games as well as more games/booths to play with.

Overall, this is a fun carnival themed app which will appeal to kids from preschool through early elementary school.  The mini games are fun as are the carnival games, but it seemed like more content would be necessary to “complete” the game.  My son (7) enjoyed the app, but grew frustrated at a couple of the mini games when he had trouble completing them.  Some of the mini games like the slide have wide appeal, while others like the tossing of the ball or catching the ducks can feel frustrating to younger kids if they have trouble with that particular skill set.  There are no external links or in-app purchases.

OctoMinus by Zyrobotics LLC – Review

OctoMinus is the latest switch-accessible app from Zyrobotics that allows children of all motor abilities to play arcade-style subtraction games. Like their earlier OctoPlus, OctoMinus is also designed to be fully customizable so that every child can experience success while playing and learning single-digit subtraction facts.

What we love…

Customizable gameplay that ensures more enjoyable play and learning experience for kids of all abilities.

What we’d love to see…

Direct access to the play options to change the speed of the turtles/octopus from within the game; on-screen indicator of how much ink is used/left for shooting; and game rules.

Summary

A fully customizable arcade-style subtraction game app that enables children of different abilities to experience success while playing and learning single-digit subtraction facts.

Our Rating

There are 2 modes of play in the app – Drill and Challenge. Each mode comes with a choice of 3 different skill levels – Beginner, Advanced or Expert. The objective of the gameplay in both Drill and Challenge is the same. A subtraction question appears at the top of the screen and the child has to use the octopus to shoot ink at the turtles to earn points.

While there are many arcade-styled subtraction apps in the app store, I want to highlight a few features in OctoMinus that you won’t find in most (if not all) of the other apps.

image

Firstly, instead of grouping the subtraction facts by the subtrahend (the number that is to be subtracted) in the learning mode (Drill) which is the typical approach, OctoMinus presents the facts by the subtraction difference (minuend – subtrahend = difference). For example, if you choose Drill 1, you will see all the subtraction equations that give you the answer ‘1’ e.g. such as 5-4 = ?, 10-9 = ? etc.

Secondly, To shoot ink, the child just needs to touch anywhere on the screen or use an external switch (connected through a Bluetooth switch). This makes it easy for children with motor difficulties or cognitive delays to play the games. As they gain more confidence and better skill, they can proceed to higher skill levels and adults can further fine-tune the difficulty level by adjusting the speed of the turtles and octopus in the Settings.

Other customisation options include turning off the sound effects, music, voice or background during the game if these are found to be affecting the players negatively. There is also a choice of English or Spanish language.

image

Most importantly, OctoMinus is all about success. In the Drill mode, kids will experience success all the time as all the moving turtles carry the answer to the subtraction equation. As long as you hit a turtle, you gain a point. The incentive for not tapping randomly is that if you use less ink, you earn more stars. The game ends when the time runs out. The constant audio and visual feed of the math facts goes into the childaren’s long-term memory as they play the games repeatedly. Although this app doesn’t teach your child how to subtract, it provides a stress-free way for learning the subtraction facts.

image

The Challenge mode is where players are tested on what they have learnt. For each subtraction equation that is presented, players touch the screen or switch to shoot the turtles when the octopus in the correct answer arch. There are 4 arches and 3 or 2 (instead of only 1) of them has the correct answer, again ensuring that the children have greater chance of success. They score points when they hit the turtles but face counter attacks from the turtles when they shoot from the wrong answer arch. Here, the number of correct and incorrect answers are recorded and summarised in the Math Score.

image

A detailed Progress Report of the last 5 Challenge play sessions is available in the locked Parents’ Zone and the information will give you an idea where your child needs more practice. The app also supports multi-player profiles which means you can have a few children using the app and all their progress reports are recorded.

Points earned by the players can be used to purchase sea creatures from the OctoStore for their Trophy Case which may be motivating for some children.

My youngest doesn’t fully understand how the Advanced or Expert skill levels work and how to strategise in order to get more points but I see that he enjoys the games. They don’t demand too much from him and he can experience success all the time. If you have a child who gives up easily when playing with games that are too hard for him/her, you should check out OctoMinus as you can customize the games so that your child will better enjoy the games and wants to play (practice) more. The games are also great for developing better fine-motor skills, hand-eye coordination, visual attention, reaction and timing.
