Dr. Panda Plus: Home Designer – Review

Dr. Panda Plus: Home... iconDr. Panda Plus: Home Designer is a physical toy which includes cards as well as the ability to take a photograph of them and display them on your device.  Inside the box are 51 flashcards, 12 non-toxic erasable markers and a QR code which activates the app.  Cards inside the box include everything you would find in a home ranging from bathroom items (sink, tub, toilet, towel rack); bedroom (crib, loft bed, bunk beds, lights, flooring, characters, clothing for the characters, rocking chair, bookshelf,  ); kitchen (table, counters, plant, laundry basket, stove, cabinets and living room (couch, stereo system, chair.)  Note these are not all of the items – they are selected ones that I picked out.

What we love…

fun interactive app that showcases what an iPad can do using a physical toy and merging it with 3D design

What we’d love to see…

ability to save your creations on the camera roll, ability to move from house to house more easily, an outside space for kids to design and play in

Summary

Super fun app which brings Dr. Panda to life in physical play.  It can be played for long or short periods of time or longer periods of time.  Dr. Panda Plus Home Designer provides a fun augmented-reality like experience which helps kids be creative with art and design while helping to familiarize letters and words.

To play, first you launch load the app on your device.  Next you scan the QR code which is located inside the Dr. Panda Plus box to activate the app.  Then you can take out the cards and start creating.  When playing with Dr. Panda Plus: Home Designer with my kids – I usually separated the cards into categories like bedroom, characters, clothing and then also by room to make it easier for my toddler to follow along.  Each card is double sided – one that kids can color in using the included dry erase markers and the other is already colored in.  Once the card is done, you simply hold it up and take a photo of it using the camera on your device.  The object is rendered into 3D and then you can place it within the home.  My younger son loved taking photos of all of the objects to make his dream house – there were lots of flooring changes along with multiple beds in the bedroom,  With my older son – he’s a third grader he picked out specific cards he wanted to color prior to even launching the app.  He then colored them in using the included markers and making his own designs.  He was a bit more thoughtful in how he organized the house making a kitchen, bathroom, living room and bedroom as well as designing all the clothes for the various characters.  To wipe off the cards we used a baby wipe although any soft cloth will work.  A few times, my older son didn’t want to erase his creation so it did take a bit more “scrubbing” to get it off.  Each house has four rooms – and you can choose where you want the rooms to be placed.  When you take a photo the image can be lined up and then it “pops” into 3D mode for placing.  When you take the photo it also brings out letters which encourage kids to spell the name of the object they are creating – kids can choose to bypass this.  If you accidentally take a photo of an item or too many you can simply place it in the recycle bin.

I loved how easy this app and game were to use.  No rules no fuss!  I could play one way with my younger son and then with my older son he could be independent and color in his own cards to create the room and design it as he wished.  We could use the pre-designed cards or use the cards that we colored on/decorated and play.  I found it was easiest to scan things in bunches to complete one room at a time just to make it more fun.  My kids also enjoyed making multiple houses – they made one for Dr. Panda, another for Tao and a third for Meimi junior.  The also created a bunch of cute clothes for each character to wear.  In addition – my older son had a larger set of dry erase markers that he was able to use with the cards so he had more color choices.  The box holds the game and markers making it easy to keep everything together.  The cards are made of a sturdy cardboard that has stood up to repeated uses and did not bend despite the best efforts of my younger son.  The game can be used across multiple devices which was great as it meant my older son could play on his own iPad while my younger son and I could use a different iPad.

In terms of improvements – it would be neat if you could go from house to house within the app rather than having to open each house separately.  In addition, it would be nice if there were a “holding area” for you to scan your cards and that way you could wipe them off and make a different design without losing the first design.  We tried a few different ways to do this without success.  It would also be nice if there were a way to “back up” the QR code just in case something happened to the box.  It might also be fun to include mini games within the app from the various Dr. Panda titles to provide different activities for kids to do.

Dr. Panda Plus Home Designer provides a fun augmented-reality like experience which helps kids be creative with art and design while helping to familiarize letters and words.  My kids have spent hours playing with the app and each time they create a new house or go into play it’s a fun new experience.  I encourage them to narrate and tell me what they are doing and making during the process which also helps familiarize them with various names of objects.

Dr. Panda Plus Home Designer is available on Amazon for $39.99.

Stanley Stand by Distil Union – Review

What we love…

Stanley Stand is easy to use portable stand for your iPhone, iPad or other device

What we’d love to see…

better way to carry it around – I currently put it back in the box each time I use it although it can be flattened.

Summary

Overall, this is a great flexible stand which is perfect for anyone with tech in your life.  It’s held up very well during my testing and multiple uses.

Our Rating

recommended-by-the-imums

Stanley StandThe Stanley Stand by Distil Union is a leather device that bends to hold your device and accessories while cooking, serving as a portable charging station, holding your tablet and more.  Stanley Stand is made of leather, merino wool felt and heavy steel.  The Stanley Stand is covered on the outside by leather in your choice of color (black, brown, gray, lime, aqua, red) and on the inside is Merino wool felt.  They cover up a piece of steel inside which bends to make the Stanley stand usable in so many situations.  Each stand has light grey Merino wool felt which has white stitching, and the darker stand (black) has darker grey felt with black stitching.  The stand features a small hole in the back designed to feed your cables through so they are not in the way of your device.

You can use it as a non-traditional dock on your desk at work, on your kitchen counter to hold your device while cooking, to act as a small typing stand or simply to get your device up from a flat spot.  It will hold phones and tablets up to 8″ tall and held my iPad Mini in a Griffin Survivor case quite comfortably.  You can bend the stand to your viewing angle (so you can watch movies while it is on a table or use it for cooking) or a low angle so you can use it as a typing stand.  Inside the box is the Stanley Stand in your choice of color and a USB extension cable which is six feet, this plugs into your lightening charger for your iOS device and works with any USB cable you already use to charge your device by giving it a bit more length.

When I got my Stanley Stand I started coming up with great ideas of using it.  The Stanley Stand is  small enough to toss in my backpack and bring with me when I’m out with my kids, so I can stream a Netflix movie while they are having an appointment or while I wait in the car for the time of the appointment.  I also brought it along as a portable charger – I like many have my iPhone go dead sometimes.  This can be frustrating – especially when you find a plug but it’s a little bit too far away or perhaps you don’t want to be limited by the length of your standard issue Apple cable.  Thankfully using the USB extension you can now comfortably sit in a char while having your device plugged in!  I also liked the Stanley Stand when cooking – I have lots of recipes on my device but I hate touching my iPhone with dirty hands to check the ingredients.  Now, I simply prop it on the Stanley Stand, turn off sleep mode and get cooking!  My husband also recently brought the Stanley Stand to a conference he attended where he had all of the slides on his iPad – instead of having to hold his device while listening to the lecture he simply propped it up and could easily follow along.  One of my favorite things was that I could adjust the Stanley Stand to almost any direction to make it suit my needs – it was nice that it was not molded plastic and static.

In terms of enhancements – right now I put the Stanley Stand back into the box each time I take it somewhere with me – and the box is getting a bit tattered.  I haven’t figured out a better solution – it’s pretty small and fits in tight spaces but I don’t want to mistakenly stretch it out.  It does fold flat – and I have done that a few times to slide it into a tight space in my bag – but I’m not sure if that is a good idea long term.

Overall, this is a great flexible stand which is perfect for anyone with tech in your life.  It’s perfect for kids who may be using a tablet to do reading and need to prop it up, adults who need a desktop charging stand or anything in between.  It’s held up very well during my testing and multiple uses.  In fact, if anything the leather has gotten a nice patina to it.  At a cost of $49.99 USD I feel the Stanley Stand is worth it and is a great gift for someone on your list who may be hard to buy for!  You can buy it direct from Distil Union for $49.99, Amazon and other retailers.

SnapPower Safe Light and USB Charger by SnapPower – Review

What we love…

super easy to install SnapPower Safe Light allows you to childproof and install night lights throughout your house.  Snap Power Charger is a perfect outlet replacement especially if you have a home office where you might need to charge your electronics without having them downstairs

What we’d love to see…

ability to use in a bathroom or kitchen using GFCI

Summary

Easy to install child proofing solution that has the benefit of pathway lighting and no covers to lose or cords to lose when charging your cell phone. I love how easy it is to access my outlets now and don’t worry my toddler will see me removing one of the plastic outlet covers and try to do so himself potentially resulting in a hazard.  Simple.  Easy.  A must have product in my home.

SnapPower Safe Light by SnapPower is an easy to install wall replacement switch that not only childproofs but adds lights so you don’t need to take up one of the outlets with a nightlight.  As a mom of a toddler, I increasingly found myself telling my son “no” when it came to power outlets.  I remember childproofing with my first involved cumbersome outlet covers or the little white outlet covers you would remove just so you could vacuum and then stick back in.  I knew that there had to be a better solution.  At our house, in addition to needing to childproof, many of our outlets had nightlights plugged into at least one of the outlets.  We have some pretty dark corners, especially at the bottom of the stairs.  Other products in the lineup include switch plate covers for light switches
Installation was a snap – it took me more time to go downstairs and turn off the breaker than it did to install each of the three SnapPower Safe Lights.  You simply switch off the power, remove the outlet cover, and then insert the new outlet cover which has metal prongs on each side.  These prongs go inside the outlet and provide power for the LED guidelight at the bottom of the outlet.  Not only are they childproof, but you gain an outlet back and nighttime lighting.  Each outlet contains a sensor which turns the light on and off based on the light conditions or you can set it to high or low, and it costs mere pennies a day to use.  It’s so much brighter than the previous blue nightlights we were using, but not too bright if my older son gets up during the night to use the bathroom.

We also tested the Snap Power Charger, which allows you to convert your outlet to a USB charger, without losing the outlet.  We have a lot of tech in our house – and sometimes our home charging dock is full – or I might just want to plug in my iPhone if it’s running low on battery.  Installation for this was simple as well – the outlet screw provides the connection to power with the power prongs providing power and you simply snap on the cover.

For purposes of the review – I have used both the SnapPower SafeLight and Snap Power USB Charger for over a month – and I honestly love them.  I love that I don’t need to fiddle with plastic outlet covers if I need to do a quick vacuum of the playroom or worry about coming down the stairs in the dark.  When I use the SnapPower SafeLight I simply insert the plug of whatever item I want to use, slide the outlet covers over and am on my way.  When I am done, I unplug and don’t have to worry any longer about putting something else back into the outlet or fiddling with putting the cover back on.

The SnapPower Guidelight and SnapPower USB Charger work on standard outlets – they do not work with GFCI outlets due to the need for a reset button – so you can’t use them in the kitchen or bathrooms.  I would love to see this in the future although I am sure it will require a redesign of some sort.

Overall, this has been a fantastic solution for night time lighting, childproofing and charging for our family.  I love how easy it is to access my outlets now and don’t worry my toddler will see me removing one of the plastic outlet covers and try to do so himself potentially resulting in a hazard.  Simple.  Easy.  A must have product in my home. Items can be purchased directly from SnapPower or via Amazon.

RRP of SnapPower Safe Light is $17.00 USD for a single or 10 for $140 USD.

RRP of the SnapPower USB charger is $20 USD for a single or a three pack for $54 USD.

Pixie Points by Pixie Technology -Review

27_BluePixieDust_InApp_CouchWithFriends-small

Pros…

Ability to accurately locate missing items, uses a new technology to improve accuracy

Cons…

Non-replaceable battery, no built-in GPS, so limited ability to track out of range items. Can be tricky to attach to very curved items.

Summary

Pixies Points are a great way to track things you frequently lose around the house- such as keys, wallet, remote controls and even cats that like to hide under the furniture !

Our Rating

recommended-by-the-imums

Do you constantly lose your keys? Your Wallet? The TV remote ? The cat? If you do, the good news is there are now many products on the market to help you track your lost items. The problem is, although many of them are good at telling you the geographical location of an item, they are not always as good at helping you pinpoint their exact location. It’s great to know your keys are at home, but even better to know they are under the couch cushion or inside your handbag or in a dresser drawer. Pixie Points from Pixie Technology use a “Location of Things” platform to pinpoint their location down to inches, and utilize augmented reality to show the location of the missing items.

Pixie Points look like slightly oversized guitar picks and are designed to be attached to your iPhone and items you want to be able to find. Pixie Points are constantly communicating with each other and signaling their respective distances. This creates a local mesh network so they can triangulate to give an accurate location. Because of this you need a minimum of 2 pixie Points in the area (and more is better), the one attached to your phone works as one point and the one you are searching for is the 2nd.

Set Up

To use them you first download the free iPhone app and follow the directions on the screen to pair the first Pixie Point to your phone. This one needs to stay with your phone.  You can keep it in place by using the Pixie Point iPhone case or by sticking it to your iPhone or current iPhone case. The phone case is currently free with purchase of a 2 pack or 4 pack of Pixie Points.

Next, individually pair each of your other Points to your phone. They are color coded so you can easily see which is which, and you can also and label them in-app by the name of object they will be attached to. It is very quick and easy to pair the Pixie points and the whole set up only takes a few minutes. The Pixie Points have adhesive backs and come with spare double-sided adhesive patches. A key fob is also included, so you can easily attach a Point to your keys.

iPhone Screenshot 1iPhone Screenshot 2iPhone Screenshot 4

Setting up the Pixie points and pairing them is pretty quick and painless. When you want to find your missing item you open the Pixie app.
All your Pixies points show in a list on the screen, and give an approximate location e.g. nearby, approximately 12 feet away, out of range. You then tap on the Pixie you want to find.

What happens next depends on how close the missing item is.

Within Range

If it is within range with a good signal, it will ask you to do a Panorama Scan. This is just like taking a panoramic picture with your phone but combines the picture you are taking with virtual reality, in a similar way to Pokemon Go. You follow the on screen arrow (and virtual assistant) to scan the room. Once the scan is complete, a trail of virtual Pixie dust, color co-ordinated to the chosen Pixie Point, appears on the screen showing you where to look for your item.

Once you start walking towards your item the screen switches to a colored pointer with a distance indicator. You follow this much as you would a compass bearing- walking in as close a direction to the arrow as you can. As you walk the distance indicated keeps updating to show how close your item is.

Once you are within 5 feet of the item the app changes mode again  to “metal detector mode”. This has a hot-cold indicator scale, with distance and an audible beeping, helping you to zero in on your item’s location.

Out Of Range or Poor Signal

iPhone Screenshot 5If the Pixie point is detected but has a weak signal it will ask you to walk until you get a better signal. Initially you will see a bar graph indicating signal strength. If this gets stronger as you walk keep going that way, if it gets weaker turn around and go a different direction. Once the signal starts to improve it will ask you to walk in an “L” to allow the Pixie Points to map out the location of the missing item (this works in the same way as the panorama scan in helping locate it.) It will then switch to pointer mode followed by metal detector mode as you get closer.

If it is out of range it will tell you the last time it was “seen” and where and when that was. If this happens it is still worth walking to see if it comes into range, especially in a home or building with a complex layout as having many walls in the way can interfere with the signal.

Practical Testing

As my family will no doubt attest, I’m pretty skilled at loosing things, especially my car keys. My son is also particularly adept at losing remote controls, so we make a pretty good family for testing Pixie.

The first day I had Pixie Points I paired the points, but I didn’t yet have my iPhone in the Pixie case I slipped it’s Pixie Point into a credit card slot of the wallet iPhone case I was using. I then lent my phone to my son without warning him the Pixie Point was in the pocket. Later that day I went to look for my keys and discovered my phone Pixie Point was missing. I couldn’t look for the keys as you need the phone Pixie Point for the app to work!

I thought that was the end of the test, but then I realized I could just allocate a different Pixie Point to the phone. I allocated a new Pixie Point to the phone and fixed it securely in place using the Pixie Point iPhone case. I could then track my other Pixiefied items, but was still missing one Pixie Point.

When I searched for the missing Pixie Point it was showing as out of range, and the last place it was seen was at home. It was out of range everywhere in the house, so I assumed it must have got lost somewhere when we were out for the day. The last seen location only shows you the GPS location of the last time you opened the app and successfully connected to the Pixie Point, so if you lost it at a different location where it had not been connected to the app this won’t show.

After a couple of days I decided to try scanning outside the house and as soon as I did so it was back in range and I successfully tracked in to the car. Inside the car the metal detector mode tracked it to the central console, but I could not find it at all. Eventually I discovered it hidden in the folds of a collapsible sunshade that was under the console. I can honestly say that without the Pixie and and metal detector mode I would never have found it- it was so well hidden that I had a really hard time seeing it even though I knew it was there!

Since then I have used it to track my keys successfully many, many times and to track down hidden remote controls too. One caveat with the remote control is you really need a relatively flat section on the remote to be able to attach the Pixie Point. My Samsung Smart TV remote has a very curved back and I can not get it to stay attached, even using the included “curved surface adapter”, it works fine with other flatter remotes such as our Apple TV remote.

Pixie Points are waterproof with IP67 certification and I have had one survive going through a wash cycle in my washing machine!!

Uses

I think Pixies Points are a great way to track things you frequently lose around the house- such as keys, wallet, remote controls and even cats that like to hide under the furniture. I love how it automatically switches between modes to accurately pin point your item’s location. I have had several times where I have looked for an item with my naked eyes and was sure it wasn’t there, only to be proved wrong when I search for it with Pixie.

Pixie Points are great trackers, but they aren’t suitable for every use. I would not use them for a pet that tends to get out as they are no use in tracking a wandering pet if they are out of range. You also can’t use them to find your phone as you need the phone to be able to track Pixiefied items. Because most people take their phone everywhere they are still useful if you misplace another Pixiefied item away from home, as long as you realize you have lost it within the Pixie Point range. Inside this is typically 30′-50′ and outside up to 150′ in line of sight.

I do find the “last seen location” of limited usefulness as it only tracks the last time the Pixies Point connected with the app. If the phone and Pixiefied item were separated at a location where the app was not opened this wont be recorded.

Pixie Points do not have replaceable batteries, so you need to get a new Pixie Point when the battery runs out. Battery life is stated as typically 1 year, I would like to see a replaceable battery option in future.

Overall, a great option for tracking frequently lost items with pinpoint accuracy as long as they are within range- so best used for items in the home or ones that are often carried with the user’s cellphone such as keys and wallets.
