Featured App: Read with Phonzy by MeowTek

iPad Screenshot 2

Read With PhonzyRead with Phonzy by MeowTek is a free universal app for iOS which features speech recognition to understand how well kids pronounced words using a character named Phonzy who provides prompts on the words.  The app requires that you opt in via email to use it and understand the terms and conditions.  It utilizes speech technology which recognizes and assesses the specific word that you are focusing on in the sentence.  It works best with children and does work well in a noisy environment like a busy home or a place where there is background noise.  As children pronounce words correctly, they can unlock the word which is then put into a gallery.  It also helps kids build confidence in reading (especially sight words) and improves skills of sentence building and thinking quickly.  We tested the app in a variety of environments including with a television on in the background, at a local park and in a classroom with other children.  Each time Phonzy was able to zero in and understand the words being spoken without picking up the ambient noise.

iPad Screenshot 4

One of the great things for me about the app was that I could help my son focus in on specific word types which he would learn and then as he got better with the pronunciation we were able to go back and re-listen to where he might have previously stumbled.  The app helps you correctly pronounce words and encourages children to read out loud – without a lot of corrections “in the moment” which then helps to build self confidence and sounding out skills.  MeowTek collects the audio recordings to improve the speech technology of the app and increase recognition, but no personal information about your child is collected.  Phonzy currently focuses on key words and important phrases, with the end goal of understanding the entire sentence.  The app is PRIVIO certified which means that MeoTek has COPPA compliant privacy practices to protect your child’s information and the verification via email is the method of ensuring that a parent understands that their child is using the app.

To use the app, Phonzy presents the user with a simple sentence similar to the one above with one specific word highlighted.  Your child reads and records the sentence and if the highlighted word is pronounced correctly, you get the object which is then placed in your gallery.  The words presented are appropriate for children from late kindergarten through mid-elementary school or approximately end of grade 3 according to the ones that I saw.  My son gained huge amounts of confidence when reading with Phonzy aloud because I wasn’t always trying to correct him and he didn’t feel “pressured” to perform on the spot.  My son liked that Phonzy would recognize his words most of the time and that he could easily re-record them as needed.

iPhone Screenshot 2

Phonzy is currently working to understand additional speech and speech recognition technology.  Currently, Phonzy is programmed to understand the specific highlighted words, very occasionally he will misunderstand a user however, as my son used the app more we found that Phonzy was correct in 18/20 trials.  The data collected from the app is made anonymous and is used to build and improve on speech recognition technology, it is never shared with any third parties and neither are the actual recordings.  I also loved that I could save the sentences that my son was saying and share them with his speech therapist to show his progress over time.

Overall, this is a great free app that encourages children to increase the number of words that they can read and earn some fun gallery prizes doing so.  It was a great self confidence booster for my son who struggled at times reading out loud and now has built up some confidence as he works through using the app and practicing new words.  We also liked knowing that we were helping Meowtek improve their speech recognition technology and perhaps, learn from some of the challenges that my son was having.

Toddler Kids Puzzles Puzzingo – Educational Games by 77Sparx Studio, Inc. – Review

iPad Screenshot 1.

What we love…

fun interactive puzzle game that includes IAP to buy additional puzzles

What we’d love to see…

a way to save photos, a trophy case for the mini game achievements

Summary

Overall, this is an app that has wide appeal to kids young and old and can be played by yourself or in a multi-player setting with kids taking turns.  I really like all of the new updates that were included as did my kids!

Our Rating

Toddler Kids Puzzles Puzzingo – Educational GamesAs a mom of two kids, Puzzingo by 77Sparx Studio, Inc, a universal app for iOS has saved me hundreds of hours of cleaning up pieces, trying to find missing ones or worse yet not being able to complete a puzzle in the limited time I had with my kids.   Puzzingo recently launched a bunch of new great updates which include new puzzles, more animations and sounds and encourages kids to look at the pieces to fit them into the right spot.  The app encourages kids to look at the pieces offered, and then figure out which of the spots they fit into.  This free version of the app includes a free daily puzzle as well as in-app purchases protected by a parental gate to purchase additional content.  You can set the puzzles to be “easy” or “super easy” and the music can be turned on or off.

Puzzingo has added a lot of great new content to the app this year which includes: pirates, music, bugs, sports, fairytales, as well as 15 new mini games just in 2016!

One of the things I like about the app is that it only gives two choices at a time when putting the puzzle together, that means that my two and a half year old isn’t overwhelmed by all the potential choices of which puzzle piece to pick.  I also love that when I use it with him we can talk about what the pieces are – for example we recently played with the new bugs puzzle, because what little boy doesn’t love bugs!  First, you “pop” open the present and then you are given two pieces which you have to fit into the puzzle.  I also liked that the names of the items are spoken and if it is put in the wrong place more than once, you are gently guided using a red arrow to put it in the right spot.  As you add more items to the puzzle, it becomes more complex and the picture begins to fill in.   After you finish the puzzle, you can then “create the bug” by picking your favorite choices of the interactive bug and when you are done you “exit”.  I also like the brightly colored illustrations which both my kids liked as well.  I also liked that once you buy a in-app purchase pack or if you buy the “all access pass” you continue to be able to keep your content. We also named the shapes and worked on shape recognition to realize what pieces fit into what spots.

My older son loves sports, so he was happy to see a new sports puzzle added to the app.  He loved the football puzzle the most and liked how the images filled in and completed the puzzle after he added the pieces. He did struggle a bit with the mini game where you kicked the football but finally figured out that if you tapped toward the right side of the he would be able to get a trophy.  I really like the illustrations and that the spoken words are clear, no matter what the language is.  There are visual and audio cues designed to make the app usable by toddlers and special needs kids.

There are parental gates which requires answering a simple math problem in order to access a parental control area which includes email, social media and internet.

In terms of enhancements, my son wanted to be able to “save” his completed puzzles to the camera roll.  We just did this by taking a snapshot of my iPad using the home and power button.  It would also be fun, according to him if we were able to save the mini games and trophies in a case.

Overall, this is an app that has wide appeal to kids young and old and can be played by yourself or in a multi-player setting with kids taking turns.  I really like all of the new updates that were included as did my kids!

News: Clever Dragons makes Election Day Apps Free on November 8

iPad Screenshot 1

Menlo Park, California, USA — November 1, 2016 — For immediate release

One day only: in honor of this patriotic time, Clever Dragons Learning Apps is making US Presidents Quiz (regular price: $1.99 USD) and 4th of July Quiz (regular price: $.99 USD) free to download on Election Day, November 8, 2016.

Both apps offer fun, fast-paced, quiz-style game play in which students can choose to challenge themselves to beat the clock or play at their own pace. Each title offers multiple learning levels, with the option to adjust difficulty. If an incorrect answer is selected, the correct one is shown and students can review their mistakes. All content is included in the app, so you don’t need an internet connection to play, and there are no in-app purchases.

The US Presidents Quiz teaches students to identify all the US presidents (elected so far) by term served. The beginning levels include pictures as helpful hints, but the training wheels come off as play continues. It’s great for test prep, or as a fun challenge for learners of all ages.

The 4th of July Quiz lets students practice facts about US history and the birth of our great nation. Material covered is typically part of the curriculum for US grades 4th through 8th.

Eager to learn but missed the freebies? These apps, along with Clever Dragons’ popular US History and World History titles, and the Geography Quiz Game, are included in the U.S. Learning Pack bundle, five apps for just $5.99 USD, a 33% savings.

InBody PUSH – Handheld Ultrasonic Stadiometer by InBody – Review

InBody PUSH - Handheld Ultrasonic Stadiometer Height Measuring Device for Kids and Adults with CDC Growth Charts APP for iOS and Android

What we love…

easy to use accurate way to keep track of your kids height over time including via a companion app

What we’d love to see…

Video’s to demonstrate usage and integration with Push app

Summary

Great device to help you keep track of your kids growth over time and I liked how I could compare my son’s height to my other son once I had entered all of the data into the app.  I was able to track roughly how tall they were at the same ages – although we didn’t use the exact same measuring tool.

Our Rating

recommended-by-the-imums

Push is a handheld stadiometer which measures height using ultrasound via the push of a button.  The stadiomer and companion app will register and manage the heights of up to 20 people and plots measurements on a CDC growth chart.  The device is shaped in a triangular shape and is easily held in one hand allowing you to measure your child – or anyone else in a simple easy to manage one hand format.  You can use it to track your children’s growth over time as an alternative to the “pencil marking on the wall” or traditional growth charts that you may otherwise have to mount on the wall.  To use, you simply have your child stand on a hard surface like a hardwood floor (carpet does not work well) with their feet against the wall, you push a button with one finger and the measurement is done in mere seconds.  Push uses ambient temperature and humidity to ensure the measurement is correct, otherwise it will deliver an error message.  I tried using it both the “recommended” as well as “non recommended” ways and found Push’s accuracy was best on a solid surface floor versus carpet.  Push will measure heights from  1′ 8″ – 6′ 7″ / 50 – 200 cm.  Of note, heights can vary by up to .2″ depending on the posture of your child when measuring.  When you add your child to the Push app, you can enter if they are male/female as well as a photo.  This helps to ensure your child is tracked on the correct growth chart.

As a mom, I like to know the statistics of my kids.  I weigh them monthly and have always had trouble keeping track of their heights.  I used to use a wall-mounted chart but found that it differed significantly from measuring devices used by my kid’s doctors – which even include drawing lines on the paper for babies who can not yet stand and measuring using a measuring tape.  I have even found that their heights can vary depending on where they are measured, if they have their feet properly against the wall or even how cooperative they are on a specific day!  For me, knowing their height is important for a variety of reasons including height in a car seat, knowledge of where they fit on a growth curve and just to see how they are growing over time.  I love how easy Push is to use.  I loved how easy Push was to use.  The measurements were accurate and they were displayed both on the Push device as well as loaded into the Push app on my iPhone.  I also liked that Push will display results over time and show how my child compares to others on the growth chart.    I also liked that I could go back and put in historical measurements for my kid’s heights which meant I could track them over time – this is a manual addition via the Push app where you input measured data.

iPhone Screenshot 3

In terms of enhancements, I wish that the instructions for Push were a little clearer.  The device itself is easy to use, however, a video demonstration or even more specific instructions might be helpful to brand new users.  Once you use Push a few times, it’s very intuitive so a video or some sort of demonstration might be helpful just for brand new users.  It would also be helpful to have more direct instructions on how to enter data into the Push app – I figured it out via trial and error, but that information might be helpful for first time users.

Overall, this is a great device to help you keep track of your kids growth over time and I liked how I could compare my son’s height to my other son once I had entered all of the data into the app.  I was able to track roughly how tall they were at the same ages – although we didn’t use the exact same measuring tool.  I look forward to keeping track of my kids measurements over time and seeing how they grow over time.

Square Panda Phonics Playset by Square Panda – Review & Giveaway

Square Panda Phonics Playset

What we love…

ability to use a multisensory approach to learning letters which includes apps and physical letters placed on the playset to form words; included parental dashboard to track your kids progress

What we’d love to see…

ability to customize words in all apps, a mobile friendly version of the Square Panda Playground website

Summary

The Square Panda Phonics Playset is a great demonstration of how you can use your iPad and integrated playset to provide learning both on the screen and using tactile letters to complete a goal – I can’t wait to see what else this company will bring.

Our Rating

recommended-by-the-imums

The Square Panda Phonics Playset by Square Panda which features a bluetooth enabled playset to engage kids in learning a variety of activities from learning letters, spelling, letter sounds, rhymes, learning new vocabulary words and more.  The set consists of 45 Smart Letters, a Playset box which you pair to your iPad and holds your device while in use, access to the Square Panda Playground where you can manage a parent account, see information about your child’s progress and additional learning opportunities as well as 4 AA Batteries.  The Square Panda Playset requires either iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad Mini, iPad Air 2 or iPad Pro in order to run and you must be running iOS 8.x and above.  The Square Panda Phonics Playset provides a multisensory tactile learning experience which combines content on your iPad with letters and visuals within the app. It includes 14 levels of phonics play as well as an integrated dashboard to track progress.

Setup is quick and easy.  First, you set up an account on Square Panda with your email and other information.  That gives you access to the parental dashboard.  After that you can unpack the Phonics Playset, install the 4 included AA batteries, download the apps and be using them within 10 or less minutes.  I spent some time in the Square Panda Playground website because I wanted to check out the features there.  There are so many great things!  You can add your own custom words including your child’s name – and for me when I last had my son use the playset I included words from his spelling list that week!  When you enter custom words they are put into your child’s games and you can even upload a picture to go with them!  Words must be between 1-8 characters, so more complex spelling words won’t work here, however, it’s a great way to practice.  The Square Panda Playground also lets you choose words for specific types of situations like bathroom and body anatomy as well as even excluding a specific letter if you misplaced it from the playset.  You can also block specific types of words if you wish which gives you a great level of customization.

iPad Screenshot 1

The playset includes 45 smart letters.  Vowels are yellow and consonants are yellow to make for easier differentiation between the letter types.  These all stored inside the playset case when not in use.  You can have up to three players per playset, and the content dynamically changes depending on which user is selected so with my 2 year old we are simply working on even identifying letters while with my 8 year old he is working on spelling words and earning badges.  The Square Panda Playset includes access to two apps, and one of the two apps Square Panda Lagoon allows you to use the custom words that you have created.   Square Panda Bowling (above) has you bowl with your finger to knock down the pins and spell out words.  It combines a multi-sensory approach where you do an activity, get a letter with your finger on your iPad and then properly place it in the try to spell the word.  Kids are taught to spell words correctly from left to right which is the way that The National Reading Panel recommends as well as the way that reading is taught in school.

iPad Screenshot 4

First of all – this is not the plastic letters that I grew up with!  Many of us may remember growing up and having the magnetized letters that we used to spell things on our refrigerator.  I loved that the app required letters to be correct before allowing you to move on.  Letters are placed individually in a white box at the bottom of the playset.  The must be positioned correctly and placed on the playset in the correct order.  The photo above is from Square Panda Lagoon and includes a photo as well as the word below to reinforce learning.

It isn’t often as a mom that I find a toy that both my 2 year old and 8 year old can use.  One of my favorite things about the Square Panda Playset is the level of customization that is included especially with the Square Panda Lagoon.  I can see it is a great way to practice “trick words” or words my son might be having challenges with at school and having a great way to keep track of what he is learning in terms of letters.  With my 2 year old, we can work on understanding letters and teaching him that my iPad is a learning device.  I also liked that we could store the letters inside the playset which meant that they were not misplaced the next time we went to use it.  I use a Griffin Survivor case on my iPad Mini because even though it’s “mom’s iPad” my kids use it a lot and I loved that we could leave on the protective case even when it was in use with the Square Panda Playset, this isn’t always the case with other products on the market.  I really liked the Square Panda Playground where I could keep track of what my kids were doing with the apps – I knew what my 2 year old was doing because we were playing together but with my older son I usually help him learn how to use something and then let him try and figure it out on his own.  I liked seeing the badges of the items he accomplished as well as the ability to add in the custom words for his spelling list that week!

In terms of enhancements, I wish that both of the apps included the ability to use custom words, my son enjoyed rolling the bowling ball in Square Panda Bowling more than the Square Panda Lagoon game – I’m not sure why he preferred it more other than he enjoys bowling, so having the two app options was great.  Square Panda is planning to add more apps Letter Lab.  I hope that they include the ability to use custom words in this app.  I’d also like to see a mobile friendly version of the Square Panda Playground – I don’t often get time to sit down at my computer so I was trying to look at it on my iPad and it wasn’t as user friendly as I would have liked.

Play with letters and words today...

The Square Panda Phonics Playset is a great demonstration of how you can use your iPad and integrated playset to provide learning both on the screen and using tactile letters to complete a goal – I can’t wait to see what else this company will bring.  The Square Panda Phonics Playset retails for $119 USD and includes a standard one year parts and labor if the letters malfunction or the product itself malfunctions.  It can be purchased from Square Panda for $119 USD.

alison

This is not your mom’s letter playset.  This is a fun and interactive toy which can be used by younger and older children and can customize and provide data about what your child is learning.  It is a true demonstration of what the iPad can do versus other tablets on the market.

Art Gurus by Colto – Review

screen art gurus

Art Gurus by Colto is a drawing app geared towards children under five years old. In this app, a scrollable classroom scene unfolds where we find some items that are missing color. Children are invited and encouraged to decorate, color or draw on these items as they wish and see their creations added to the scene.

What we love…

Simple to use, fun to see art come alive on the scene, it encourages creativity and imagination.

What we’d love to see…

More stickers, black crayon and pencil tool.

Summary

A simple drawing app that encourages children’s creativity.

Our Rating

When children tap on the items, a set of three drawing tools appear: crayons, stickers and a magic wand. The crayons come with 15 colors, perhaps to keep the little ones from being too overwhelmed. However, I noticed that black wasn’t one of them, and I wish this was included as it is standard in many crayon boxes. Like the crayons, there are only a few stickers to choose from, 18 all together. I like the selection they have, but would like to see more added in a future update. The magic wand is a tool that decorates items instantly. It can be pressed repeatedly to see the item decorated differently each time. In addition to these great tools, I would like to see colored pencils included for finer drawing or writing.

I like this app because it is very simple for little ones. It encourages them to be creative, and seeing their creations appear in the classroom is great motivation. I like that they are able to save a photo of the whole classroom by clicking on the camera icon on the page. There are external links in this app, but children are prevented from accessing with a parental lock. Be aware that if your child can read, he or she can easily open the parent lock.

I would recommend Art Gurus for very young children who like to color and who are just beginning to draw.

Download a Free App and Save the Park!

Games apps are a great way to get a public education program across to families with devices. They can be fun and engaging yet educational at the same time as it provides valuable information to players through the gameplay and content.

Save the Park is one such app that has been developed with the mission to inspire and encourage families to explore volunteering with the US National Park Service. Players pick up important lessons alongside 4 different national park volunteer characters (Environment Champion, Wildlife Lover, Citizen Scientist and Culture Concierge) as they help in the quest to save the parks in this fast-paced endless running game with a twist.

In this app, players control 2 characters (a national park volunteer and a Junior Ranger) simultaneously to complete tasks while avoiding obstacles in 3 different park terrains – forest, desert and coast. Challenges abound as they earn stars to unlock levels, score combos, find hidden objects and unlock sharable national parks postcards. It is a full-fledged game app that will please any endless runner game regulars with beautifully designed animated park terrains, smooth controls, varied missions, interesting power-ups and great sound effects. It’s challenging yet it is simple enough for children to play but they will need their quick reflexes and good hand-eye coordination. The game is fun and free to boot.

Players learn about the work that park volunteers do – protect animal habitats, plant trees, clean the environment, maintain trails, collect research specimens, help park visitors, etc. and why the tasks are important. They also learn interesting facts about specific national parks and the impact they can make as volunteers. Further resources are provided via links to the various real world volunteer opportunities in the US National Parks.

Save the Park was developed in partnership with American Express and the US National Park Foundation (NPF) in celebration of the 2016 National Park Service Centennial. For each download of Save the Park before December 31, 2016, The American Express Foundation will make a $1 donation (up to $50,000) to the NPF for her park conservation and stewardship work.

It’s time to save the parks that we love. You can do your bit by downloading the free app, Save the Park, get connected with your local parks to learn about their volunteer opportunities and support their conservation efforts as a family. There is no better time to start than now.

Grocery Shopping Made Easy from Peapod by Stop & Shop – Review

iPad Screenshot 5

What we love…

easy to view nutrition facts, online shopping when I want and delivered at home.

Summary

Great alternative to traditional grocery shopping especially if you are pressed for time.  I loved the nutrition facts and how I could easily keep track of my running total.

As a busy mom of two, it seems like there are never enough hours in the day! Enter Peapod. I find myself constantly doing this or that, making a grocery list on my phone only to go to the store and forget the most important thing on my list! We are a family of four – and both my husband and son have life threatening food allergies. That unfortunately can make grocery shopping very time consuming, because you have to read every label to ensure that it is not made with the ingredient or “made in a facility which manufactures with”.

With Peapod,  I got my grocery order done online, hit the submit button, picked out a time to have my order delivered and presto. My shopping was done for the week. Price wise, I shopped sales and used coupons and it was fairly similar in price to what I pay on a weekly basis at the grocery store, except I didn’t have to go out into the store, wait in line, load it in my car and head home! I had all the items I needed for a weeks’ worth of lunches and dinners unloaded and in my refrigerator and ready to go in moments. After you place your first order, by entering your Stop and Shop card it will create a list of items you ordered to make it easier to order again in the future and they even have a spot where you can see items you bought in the past that are on sale.

Life_Comparison
I loved how easy it was to look at the nutrition facts for each of the items I placed in my cart. One thing I have learned over time is that sometimes, a manufacturer will change the ingredients or how an item is manufactured without telling you. By simply clicking on the item in the Peapod cart, I could quickly scan the nutritional label to see if it was safe for my family.

CerealI created the order on my time, and even used my iPhone to walk around and do an inventory in the kitchen of needed items like dishwasher tablets, dish detergent, salad dressing and more! I could add items to my menu on the fly and sat at my kitchen table and menu planned for the week. One of my other favorite features was the “sale tab” – I simply looked at the items on sale and incorporated them into my menu planning. For example, ground turkey was for sale, so I made a turkey meatloaf with sautéed spinach and sweet potato home fries for dinner one-night last week. We also got some really fresh fruit as well – the fruit was all in good condition – except for a grapefruit which had seen better days. Peapod customer service was awesome and refunded the item back to my credit card with no questions asked and apologized for the inconvenience. The wait was short, the service was friendly and I talked to someone in Illinois. She saw that I was a first time customer and explained more about coupons and how to use Peapod to get discounts on shipping by having orders made three days ahead.

During the delivery, I got an email when the driver was on the way as well as a text message. I was able to go downstairs, open the door and have my counters ready for them when they arrived. I also ordered some bulky items like toilet paper and paper towels, since I was running low at home. Those came in and went straight under my counter – no further unpacking needed.
I did some price comparisons at our local grocery stores, just to show you how prices compared for the week that I did my shopping trip. Locally, we have Market Basket, Shaw’s, Stop and Shop (owners of Peapod) and Target. I was pleasantly surprised to see the pricing for the items was similar, and in many cases since I shopped sales and used coupons at Peapod lower. The driver when he arrived, spent time taking my items from the totes in the back of his truck and loading them into plastic grocery bags. I could tell the items had been categorized by type, because they were sorted into bags with a few items rather than the way I usually have my reusable bags packed at the grocery store. He came into the house, and immediately pulled out my eggs so we could check to see if they arrived intact – unfortunately we had one crack but he said, it’s okay – we will refund the item on your order. I put my coupons in an envelope and he took them after helping to unload the groceries and was off in less than 10 minutes.

Meat and produce were fresh and easy to put away after arrival.  Items like cereal, paper towels and the like were placed in a bag and ready to unpack.  I did appreciate that all of the items were put into bags – although I did wish the driver could have used my reusable bags.  Coupons were doubled up to $0.99 and I had some from our Sunday paper as well as some I printed off.  It was so easy!

After unloading my groceries into my cabinet – I had a fully stocked pantry and refrigerator and was getting dinner ready within the hour.  I call that a HUGE win!  I found some great coupons online including a $15 off your first order. I also loved that I didn’t have to worry about “unneeded items” or impulse purchases that my kids might have put in the basket too. I kept on budget and the cost was what I planned rather than a “surprise” if I missed writing down an item.  I’m currently working on another Peapod order – they have earned a new customer!
