MotionPen Kids – stylus for children by MotionPen Kids – Review

motionpen_kids_product-640x640

What we love…

easy to use stylus that is kid friendly for kids of all ages, the companion apps are amazing especially for drawing and exploring the human body/hide and seek.  I loved the Palm Rejection for my younger son who used his second hand to stabilize when he was “drawing” on the iPad.

What we’d love to see…

the pen number etched into the stylus somehow, a bump or something to show which side of the stylus to use and ability to use other apps with the MotionPen

Summary

Overall, the MotionPen Kids Stylus and companion apps are a fun way to introduce a stylus to kids both younger and older.  I was happy to see how fast each of my kids adapted to using the stylus despite the wide variation in their ages.  This stylus is definitely something I will keep in my purse or bag when we have to go somewhere that might have a wait.

Our Rating

recommended-by-the-imums

As a mom, I have tested a lot of styluses including those designed for kids.  I recently had a chance to test the MotionPen Kids Stylus by Widevantage and was pleasantly surprised to see how fast my 8 year old adapted to drawing with it. Widevantage is a South Korean company   The stylus works with any Bluetooth enabled device including an iPhone/iPad, Android Tablet.  It does not use Bluetooth or have a battery.  The apps know the stylus is there, because you enter the number of the pen which is printed on the side.  The stylus is also waterproof which means if it’s accidentally dropped, unlike those that have electronics a puddle will not mean that it is damaged.    Pens need to be registered with their unique ID and an email address, they can be paired with up to 3 devices at once, but this can be changed on the go so if you have a different device than one it is paired with you can easily add it.

One of my favorite features of the MotionPen is “Palm Rejection” this means you can rest your palm on the surface of the iPad while only the tip of the stylus is used.  My older son didn’t use this feature as much, but my 2 year old who is just learning how to grip things often used his other hand to stabilize the stylus and I was happy to see we didn’t get any errant marks.

MotionCrayonMotionCrayon was my older son’s favorite companion app to use with the stylus.  This app is essentially a drawing app which turns your stylus into a crayon, marker, colored pencil or regular pencil.  You can control the thickness of the tip and even erase by flipping over the stylus and hovering it over the app.  We used this stylus at a recent doctors appointment where my son and I played Pictionary in real time while we waited all from the comfort of an iPad.  There is a coloring book with 48 different images, a free form blank canvas that you can draw on, and even a magnifying glass that lets you zoom in for more detail.

MotionLampMotionLamp is an app where your stylus turns into a lamp and as you move it around on the iPad your device lights up and shows you the different objects in the picture.  There are two modes to this app, one is a search and find the hidden object, and the second is an “explore” mode where you memorize items in the image and find the correct answer after time is up.  My son did find the explore mode a bit frustrating at times because he would run out of time while trying to find the objects.  I’d suggest an untimed version of the explore mode especially for those just learning how to use it.

MotionGamesMotionGames includes six mini games including Jurassic Travel where you turn unto a stegosaurus dinosaur, a Jenga game where you have to remove the blocks without making the tower fall (much easier said than done even for me!), Pinwheel where you experiment with the wind to keep six pinwheels spinning at the same time for as long as you can, Claw Crane where you try to reach and grab the objects like the real life arcade game, Sling Shot where you try to pop all the balloons before they fly away and finally Rocket Riding where you travel through space to shoot asteroids.  Each of the games has varying levels of difficulty, my two year old was able to play the Sling Shot with my help while my older son got frustrated with the Jenga game because it was harder than he thought it should be.

MotionPenMotionPen is a app that essentially acts as a whiteboard where you can create notes, make notes on photos, drawings and diagrams and then share them via social media. I used this app on my iPhone but due to the social sharing did not let my kids use it.

MotionWebMotionWeb is a web browsing app that lets you browse using the pen instead of the traditional mouse or your fingers on your iPad.  You can zoom, scroll in/out, hover, used tabbed browsing and interact with the web in a way that I never really imaged prior to trying it.  As I would move the pen slightly, I could be able to move around on the web pages.  This was an app I used, not my kids simply because it was a bit more difficult to explain to my 8 year old who doesn’t regularly navigate the web using a tablet.

MotionBodyMotionBody teaches your kids about the human body.  The pen allows you to “peel away” the layers of the human body and discover how different parts interact with each other and better understand the structure of the human body.  This is an app that really brings the MotionPen to life, I was able to show my son recently what happened within certain parts of his body and how the blood circulated.  It also shows organ function and animation.  This uses the “hover” function as well as 3D animation.

The stylus has some heft to it which means that it’s not heavy per se, but it reminds the user that they have something in their hand and encourages them to grasp it properly.  With my older son, he quickly was able to adjust his grip while using it to draw as well as experiment with angles.  The free companion apps can encourage learning including drawing, writing, science, whiteboard, and even browsing the web.  I loved how he was creative and came up with the idea to play Pictionary during a recent doctors appointment and then we guessed what the picture was and he was entertained at the same time.

I’d love it if the number for the pen was etched in somehow, my son didn’t like the sticker on the stylus and took it off.  Luckily I stuck the sticker to the inside of the box just in case if ever becomes disconnected, but I know I might lose it at some point.  I also had to reregister my stylus twice, I’m not sure why but this was at times a bit frustrating.  I’d also love to see MotionPen Kids work with other app developers, especially those that include art to make it compatible.  For my older son, he knew where to place his fingers, but the ability to put a grip of some sort would have been helpful for my younger son who tried to “draw” with the eraser end – I just slid a chunky pencil grip on and solved it but this might help the younger users.

The MotionPen Kids Stylus is available for $22.95 from Amazon.

Kensington iPad Accessories for the Classroom #backtoschooltech

Kensington iPad Accessories for the Classroom #backtoschooltech

wired keyboard 3

Over the last few years there have been huge changes in the use of technology in school classrooms. More and more school districts are investing heavily in technology and children are using technology in the classroom from an increasingly early age. In my own local school district we’ve seen the introduction of smartboards, Chromebooks and tablets into the classrooms. To make optimal use of this technology there are often other accessories that are needed alongside the devices themselves.

I recently had the opportunity to review some of Kensington’s line of iPad accessories. With my twin 3rd graders I tested 3 accessories that can be used both in the classroom and at home: the SafeGrip Rugged iPad Case, the Wired Keyboard for iPad with Lightning Connector,  and the Gummy Grip Stylus for Kids.

SafeGrip Rugged iPad Case

When using an iPad with kids a must-have is a good protective case. The SafeGrip is a protective case with a built-in carrying handle that also serves as a stand. It is available in versions for all models of iPad and iPad Mini, the different models are slightly different in color choices and shape but have similar construction and functionality. I tested the iPad Mini version.

The SafeGrip is made of a thick, flexible, cushioned material that reminds me of the material Crocs are made from. Installing the iPad in the case is easy, as the material is flexible and it feels secure once in place. It has a textured surface making it less likely to slip out of your hands, and the front of the case is higher than the screen giving it a bumper of protection if dropped face down. My kids loved the carrying handle – and carrying it via the handle is much more secure than carrying the iPad without. There is no built-in screen protector but it does come with an adhesive screen protector. It has a slot in the back to hold a stylus and a place to write a name.

There are 3 different angles to use the iPad- flat, upright and typing mode. In typing mode the handle is folded 90 degrees and the iPad lies at an incline, this position is very stable and works well. In upright viewing mode the handle is also folded to 90 degrees and used as a stand. This mode is stable if the child is not touching the iPad, though a child with poor fine motor skills could knock it over if repeatedly touching the screen.

My children really like this iPad case and I love how protective it is and that it make it easy to carry the iPad securely. I think it is a great case for the classroom.
RRP for SafeGrip for iPad Mini is $39.99 prices vary for other models.

Wired Keyboard for iPad with Lightning Connector

wired keyboard

When using the iPad for school work children will often need to type and having a dedicated keyboard is easier then using the iPad’s touchscreen. There are many Bluetooth keyboards on the market but when using it in a school setting a wired keyboard can be a better choice. Having 30 different Bluetooth keyboards in a room competing to connect and ensuring each keyboard is paired with the right iPad can be a nightmare! The Kensington wired keyboard is designed to work with any Lightning connector iOS device and I have tested it with the iPad Mini iPad Air 2 and iPhone 5.

The keyboard has a very rugged feel to it and I think would hold up well in classroom use. It is a similar size to a laptop keyboard, so is more like typing on a computer than most iPad keyboards. Because it connects via the Lightening connector it gets its power from the iPad, so does not need to be recharged or have batteries changed which is another advantage in the school setting. I found it works very well, has comfortable responsive keys and for my 3rd grader son, who has handwriting issues and needs to type a lot of his assignments, it is a great choice.

For a classroom setting I think this is a much better choice than a Bluetooth keyboard, it is rugged, needs no batteries or Bluetooth connection and is comfortable and responsive for typing on. It is also useful at home for children who need to type on a tablet for homework assignments. RRP for the Wired Keyboard is $54.99

Gummy Grip Stylus for Kids

When using iPad apps, especially writing and drawing apps, a stylus can help to keep the iPad screen clean. It is also better for practicing handwriting than using a finger. The Gummy Grip is a stylus designed with children in mind and is sized to fit small hands. I love that its triangular cross-section encourages kids to hold it with a tripod grasp, which is something my 3rd graders are both working on in OT. It also has a hole for a lanyard so you can tie it to the iPad case to prevent the child from loosing it. The only issue I found that was too wide to fit in the stylus storage slot on the back of the SafeGrip case for iPad Mini, which seemed a pity, though you could still attach it to the case via a lanyard. I think the Gummy Grip stylus is a great choice for kids- it is relatively inexpensive at $9.99 and sized to fit small hands.

Review of the Stilo Fine Tip Stylus and Precision Film

Review of the Stilo Fine Tip Stylus and Precision Film

Stilo_architect

Summary

Overall, the Stilo is a great stylus. It has the look and feel of a high quality ballpoint or roller-ball pen, and when used with the Precision Film it feels much more like a using a real pen on paper than any other stylus I have used.  Its fine, 1.9mm, tip makes it much easier to do detailed work than a traditional stylus. It can be used with or without the Precision Film, though the feel is better with the film.

I recently had the opportunity to test out the Stilo fine tip stylus and it is the most ‘pen-like’ experience I have found to date.  It both looks and feels more like using a pen than other styluses I have used. Traditional styluses have a wide rubber tip but the Stilo has a fine (1.9mm) soft plastic tip.

The Stilo can be used with or without a screen protector and you can purchase an optional “Precision Film” designed to be used with it. I tested the Stilo with a variety of models of iPad and with an iPhone 5, I tested the Precision Film with the iPad Air 2.

Right out of the box it looks and feels like a good quality ballpoint pen. The end of the barrel unscrews to allow you to insert the AAA battery that powers it. It has a small cap that covers the tip, this can be stored on the other end when not in use. It has a discrete on/off switch on the barrel, to use it you must switch it on, in off mode the iPad/ iPhone won’t recognize it at all.

Precision Film

This is a stick-on screen protector available from StiloPen.com for $19.99. It is designed to work with the Stilo. I installed it on my iPad Air 2.

The screen protector comes with a small screen cleaning cloth to clean the screen before application, and a small squeegee to help remove the bubbles. Even though I cleaned the screen I did get a couple of pieces of dust that fell onto the screen as I was applying, so there were a few small bubbles around them that I could not get rid of. Apart from that all the rest of the bubbles came out pretty easily. I did find that with the screen protector on my screen does get much more fingerprint smudges than my native iPad screen. Apart from the fingerprints the screen protector did not seem to cause any problems with using the iPad – the screen was still very responsive. In general I do prefer tempered glass screen protectors to adhesive films, as they feel much more like the native iOS screen, but to get that pen to paper feel you do need a more pliable surface and the Precision Film worked well for this purpose.

In Use

I tested the Stilo with a variety of drawing and writing apps including Mega Lopart, Tayasui Sketches Pro and Paper. I used it with and without the Precision Film.

Without the precision film it works fine but does feel a little strange as the plastic tip does slide on the glass iPad/ iPhone screen. When using the Stilo with the Precision Film it does feel very different than using it with a naked screen, it feels much more like having a pen on paper as the screen gives slightly as you press on it.

There is a very slight lag when using the Stilo, how much depends on the speed of your pen stroke. I found at my typical writing speed the ink line was typically about 2-3mm behind the Stilo whilst in motion, if I wrote more slowly the lag was virtually gone, if faster it was a little larger. It worked well through a variety of angles.

It is very easy to switch the Stilo and and off as the switch is close to where you naturally hold it, but it is virtually flush if the barrel so doesn’t interfere at all with your grip. The Stilo will go to sleep if unused for 5 minutes to conserve the battery. Another feature of the Stilo is you can adjust the sensitivity by screwing the tip in or out, this can be useful when using other types of screen protector.

Overall, the Stilo is a great stylus. It has the look and feel of a high quality ballpoint or roller-ball pen, and when used with the Precision Film it feels much more like a using a real pen on paper than any other stylus I have used. Its fine, 1.9mm, tip makes it much easier to do detailed work than a traditional stylus, it runs on a AAA battery and does not need a Bluetooth connection. It can be used with or without the Precision Film, though the feel is better with the film.

Stilo is available from Stilopen.com  or Amazon RRP $69.99, the Precision Film is available  from Stilopen.com RRP $19.99.
