What we love…

Bright colorful graphics, fun interactions. Simple even for a pre-schooler yet engaging enough for an older child. The child learns about genetics whilst playing and having fun

What we’d love to see…

Addition of a Kids video explaining some of the science behind the app and introducing some of the terminology

Summary

DNA Play is a very creative and unique app that teaches children about genetics whilst they have fun creating new creatures and interacting with them.

Our Rating

DNA-PLAY-icon-512pxDNA Play is the latest app from Greek app developer Avokiddo. Their previous apps include Beck and Bo, Avokiddo ABC Ride, Avokiddo EmotionsThinkrolls  &  Thinkrolls 2.  DNA Play is developed for 4-9 year olds and allows the player to create and play with monsters using simple DNA puzzles.

DNA Play is an app that is simple enough a 3 or 4 year-old to pick it up quickly, but at the same time an older child can enjoy it too, as they explore how changing the genes affect the creature’s looks and personality. The gated parents section has a quick overview of basic genetics and gameplay so that parents can answer questions that come up about the science behind the app. DNA is made up of base pairs: each pair is either A – T (Adenine -Thymine) or C – G (Cytosine -Guanine). In this app each base is a different color, and the ends are shaped so that A can only pair with T and C only with G.

To create a new monster is simple, a DNA helix runs across the top of the screen and bases fall out. An unformed creature appears, as the child drags the pieces to complete the pairs, and repair the DNA helix, the creature’s characteristics appear. As they create their monster they work on 6 different areas each representing a different body part: torso, head, eyes, mouth, arms and legs.

Once they have made a monster they can play with him using a variety of interactive elements that appear- such as riding a skateboard, feeding a variety of foods or dancing to music.

Kids can also explore how changing  gene sequences cause different characteristics to appear and they can do this in 2 different ways.

Reversible changes: they can swap around the order of the base pairs and see what happens- will their fur turn pink ? Will they sprout wings or fish fins? They can reverse these changes by moving the pairs back.

Random mutations: they can also change their monsters by tapping on a body part to see what random mutation occurs.

After each change they can play again to see how this new version reacts- are long legs better for dancing or short ? They can even change the DNA half way through an activity and see what happens.

This is an app that kids can keep coming back to and create something new every time- there are 200 billion different variations possible!

There is a monster gallery where the child can store their favorite monsters and bring them out to play again another day. They can save their monster to play with later and photograph him with his DNA sequence, then try to recreate it or challenge a friend to do so.

This is a really fun app, the only update I would suggest would be to put some of the background information from the parents section into a short video so that interested kids could learn a little more about the science and terminology.

Overall, DNA Play is a very creative and unique app. I love how it can be enjoyed in different ways by different age groups. Preschoolers can easily create and interact with a variety of monster friends. Older children can explore how changing the DNA sequence changes both physical characteristics and behavior, and they can challenge themselves and others to re-create a particular gene sequence or find the optimum characteristic for a certain activity. DNA Play is a fun app that teaches children some fundamentals about genetics whilst they enjoy creating new creatures and interacting with them.

Summary

Another well-made quality children’s app from Avokido. Thinkrolls 2 continues where the original left off with the same engaging gameplay and 235 new levels introducing 7 new elements using concepts such as buoyancy, electricity and gravity. Thinkrolls 2 makes physics puzzlers accessible in a fun way to children as young as 3. Highly Recommended !

Our Rating

Thinkrolls 2 - Logic and... iconThinkrolls 2 is the sequel to the popular physics puzzler for young children Thinkrolls from Greek app developer Avokiddo. It is a combination of a ball-rolling platform game, maze and physics puzzler. The player needs to navigate increasingly complex mazes, past a variety of obstacles. Thinkrolls 2 adds 235 new levels divided between Easy and Hard modes, and introduces new concepts including buoyancy and electricity.

Thinkrolls are balls with character, one looks like a sheep, another Elvis another Little Red Riding Hood. There are 28 ThinkRolls in all, some are unlocked at the start, others unlocked during game play. The Player chooses a Thinkroll to play with, and their Thinkroll chases another Thinkroll through mazes, collecting cheerios as they go. At the end of each chapter they catch the other Thinkroll and feed it the collected cheerios which unlocks it.

The app is divided into 7 Chapters and each chapter introduces a new element. In the later levels of each chapter the maze includes not only the newly introduced element, but also the elements from earlier chapters. Players learn not only solve the current problem, but to also think ahead to what they will need to do in the next steps. At any time if a player gets stuck they can press the replay button to go back a step.

Elements

Accordion
The Player can use the accordion to move up and down, open pathways, build bridges and create stairways. Like a real accordion it only opens on one side and even plays a little music !

Water & Barrel
The mazes include water obstacles that the player has to navigate, they learn whilst Thinkrolls sink, barrels float and can be used to help the Thinkroll get safely across the water.

avokiddo-thinkrolls2-slide4Egg
Sometimes the egg is an obstacle that needs to be broken to get past, other times it needs to be treated carefully so it doesn’t break because the player needs it as a stepping stone. Players learn how different surfaces affect whether the egg breaks or not when dropped, and learn how to break an egg by jumping on it or dropping objects on it.

Fan
The powerful fan will lift a Thinkroll or other object in the air. Players learn to switch fans on and off, in combination with moving other objects, to help their Thinkroll successfully navigate the maze.

Wormhole
With this Sci-Fi twist Thinkrolls and other objects can be teleported past maze walls by entering a wormhole. You need to time it carefully though so you get through before one wormhole closes and an other opens up.

Battery
When switched off a battery can be a useful stepping stone but don’t let your Thinkroll touch it when live or they will get a nasty electrical shock.

Light bulb
Players work on improving their visual memory skills by looking ahead and remembering their planned moves when the light goes out. If they get stuck they can always tap the bulb to briefly turn it back on.
avokiddo-thinkrolls2-hardlevel

I tested out Thinkrolls 2 with my 7 year old twins and 11 year old son and all 3 were enthusiastic about the app. Although the Easy mode is designed for 3-5 year olds my 7 year-olds like to play the Easy mode first to learn about the new elements, before moving on to the challenge of the Hard mode, the 11 year-old likes to go straight to Hard mode. In Hard mode I had to really think about some of the levels, and even found at times I had to replay a level to solve it. I love how the Easy mode makes this app accessible to kids as young as 3, but the Hard mode makes it engaging and challenging enough that my 5th grader enjoys playing it. This app is great as it is, but I think a nice addition would be to add a “Challenger Mode” after all the Hard levels are completed. This would let the player play the Hard levels with limited lives, and the Player would be challenged to complete a Chapter without losing their lives.

Overall, another well-made, quality children’s app from Avokido. Thinkrolls 2 continues where the original left off with the same engaging gameplay and 235 new levels introducing 7 new elements using concepts such as buoyancy, electricity and gravity. It works on problem solving, memory, observation and planning ahead. Thinkrolls 2 makes physics puzzlers accessible in a fun way to children as young as 3, but has enough challenge to keep older children engaged too. Highly Recommended!

What we love…

comprehensive set of zoology books, educational and entertaining, great set of
features for beginning and experienced readers alike

What we’d love to see…

can’t think of anything to add or change, it’s great!

Summary

An outstanding collection of four books that will educate and entertain animal lovers
and budding zoologists.

Our Rating

In The Wild! Learning Library Collection (Dr. Seuss/Cat in the Hat)In The Wild is Oceanhouse Media’s newest and best Cat in The Hat Learning Library collection yet! It is a perfect set of four books that will get children excited about zoology, just in time for the new school year.

Safari, So Good! is a brand new book and is currently found exclusively with this collection. Children will take a journey deep in the jungles of Africa to learn more about familiar animals like elephants, cheetahs, rhinos. They will also meet unfamiliar ones that may surprise them like the kudu and the sickle horned sable.

If I Ran the Rainforest is an exciting book where children will discover that there are different kinds of rainforests. They will also learn that rainforests have four levels. They will explore each of those levels in depth from the top down and get to know some of rainforest’s colorful and lively residents. This book also touches briefly on the importance of preservation.

On Beyond Bugs! takes children down to the world of insects. They will learn about all kinds of bugs including those known as pests. They will learn that insects have various defense mechanisms including camouflage, scents, and bright colors. They will also learn about pollination and how bees play an important role in the life of a flower.

Miles and Miles of Reptiles will get the children up close and personal with crocodiles. alligators, lizards, snakes, and turtles. They will learn that there are more lizards than any other kind of reptile and will probably discover ones they never knew existed before. They will learn a lot of things about reptiles including how to distinguish an alligator from a crocodile.

iPhone Screenshot 2

All four books provide a wealth of information. Even adults may discover things they never knew before. For example, did you know that cheetah cubs sometimes play soccer with elephant poop? Yes, that got my kids laughing out loud too! The books also introduce new words like transpiration, epiphytes, and chelonians. They even teach how to pronounce these unfamiliar words. They are like science text books, but ten times the fun.

In The Wild includes all of Oceanhouse Media’s fantastic features such as text highlighting, voice recording, and tappable words and objects. It comes with two reading options: read to me and read it myself. Parental controls are provided to keep young children from accessing external links to the web and the App Store.
In The Wild! is easily this summer’s best app release. It is an outstanding collection of books that exemplify a perfect combination of fun and learning. Children will absolutely love it and I am sure the adults will to. I give this my top recommendation.

What we’d love to see…

Faster load times of the videos, randomization of some puzzles

Summary

An old-fashioned adventure story combined with a board game and a series of fun and challenging games, an entertaining and engaging app for 7-12 year olds.

Our Rating

Smart Kids : White Siberia PREMIUM Puzzles & Adventures – Educational Games and Intelligent Thinking Activities to Improve Brain Skills for your Children, Family and SchoolSmart Kids : White Siberia is the first in a series of apps, from Spanish developer Barcelona Multimedia, featuring the adventures of Naomi and The Pilot (Mr Boris). It is a combination of adventure story, board game, puzzles and videos. It can be enjoyed in English, Spanish or Catalan, music and sound effects can be switched off in settings. The app also contains a parents/ educators guide which can be found in settings. The app is available as a free lite version with limited content, and a full premium version, this review is of the full version. It contains no adverts or in-app purchases.

The app has a very unusual format, it is in essence an adventure story, told as an animated video. The video is broken into 24 segments, each segment ends as Naomi and The Pilot run into a problem. The player is then presented with a game/ puzzle to solve in order to move on to the next part of the video. In each game the player has 3 lives, if they lose all 3 they get to repeat that game. If they fail it twice they can skip the game and move on to the next video. As they move through the games they collect keys that help to solve 4 coded messages. Between sections the player returns to a board game where Naomi moves around the Board. Each square on the board represents a game, and for each game players can earn a heart for completing that game without loosing a life, a clock for completing it within the time limit, and a lightbulb for picking up the key in that game. Players can always go back and replay games to earn symbols they missed the first time.

The story itself and the graphics really remind me of the classic TinTin comic books/ cartoons, it has that same nostalgic, rip-roaring adventure feel. Although Naomi and Mr Boris are the joint stars, Naomi is really the hero of the story – she may be a child but she is very level-headed and often takes the lead just as TinTin does. The puzzles/ games are a good mix, with lots of different types of challenges presented. Some of the games include: following a tangled rope to untie knots in order, a logic puzzle, memory match, questions testing the readers comprehension of the story,  a puzzle to discern left from right when pictures of the pilot are shown in various orientations, a circular spinning puzzle and a variety of coded messages.

The whole package is a very entertaining fun app, that also exercises the player’s brain cells – working on observation skills, memory, deduction, reasoning, orientation, comprehension and problem solving. I throughly enjoyed the app and look forward to the next in the series. My only complaints are that sometimes the videos can be a little slow to load, and although the games are complex to solve, the puzzles remain the same, so once the child has mastered them there is limited replay value. The app is designed for children from 6-12 years of age; my 7 and 10 year olds enjoyed it and I had fun with it too.

Smart Kids: White Siberia is an old-fashioned adventure story combined with a board game and a series of fun and challenging games, an entertaining and engaging app for 6-12 year olds.
