A parent’s and teacher’s delight! Mindfulness for Children provides relaxing sounds of nature to help children calm down and improve focus/concentration. A calm, reassuring voice gives step by step audio instructions on how to meditate. With descriptions and terms aimed at children, users are taken through body scans, visualizations and breathing exercises.
Mindfulness for Children was created in Denmark through the joint effort of a psycho-motor therapist and a technical expert with a vested interest in mindfulness meditation. It is used by Denmark schools with great success and is recommended by several Danish child psychologists.
The developers describe “mindfulness” as being aware of what happens while it happens. The app is recommended for children ages 5 and up, but the authors caution to respect your child’s wish not to participate: “Children can be encouraged to meditate, but it should happen voluntarily.”
The app provides three guided meditations for children and two sets of relaxing nature sounds to help children calm/refocus. Our testers (and their mama ☺) appreciated the calming nature sounds the best to unwind from a busy day and to enter a sound sleep state. The meditation exercises left us feeling ready to tackle difficult schoolwork or to key into those complicated/coordinated movements for a series of new dance steps. With exercises being brief (but effective), meditations can easily be used by teachers to refocus a whole classroom to the tasks at hand vs all the extraneous thoughts/distractions.
A special feature of Mindfulness for Children is the support given to parents. Each exercise provides a detailed description of intended outcomes, how to gently get to those outcomes, and suggestions of how to apply what children have learned throughout the day. The authors encourage users to take part in the improvement process and further development of the program via social media and/or email.
Mindfulness for Children was a welcome addition to our collection of apps – its one of the few that helps children refocus on life outside of electronics. This app brings the authors’ mission to life: “Put a smile on your mind anytime, anywhere and everyday.” ☺
