Bogga Jewel by Boggatap – Review

iPad Screenshot 1

What we love…

beautifully  illustrated app that encouraged kids to “catch” the treasure

What we’d love to see…

ability to have multiple players, turn off the “three miss and you are done” rule especially for younger players

Summary

Overall, this is a fun app aimed at preschool aged children through early elementary school. I liked that it helped my son work on his “prediction” skills as well as figuring out which way to move to capture the bucket.

Our Rating

Bogga Jewel iconBogga Jewel from Boggatap is a universal app for iOS which features two different characters, a fun fishing game where you “catch” the prize as well as learn about recycling your catch.  Boggatap is a game studio based in Oslo, Norway who creates digital toys for devices. Skills practiced within the app include patterning, fine motor, attention/reaction, counting, concentration and prediction of what might come up next.  This app is best aimed at preschool although my eight year old did enjoy it for a short period of time.

Game play is straightforward – you are on a boat with either a boy or girl character.  Once you pick the character you click either the left arrow or right arrow to fish for boots and “treasures”.  As your skills increase so does the speed of the game and you must move faster to complete the levels.  As my son’s skills improved he went from using one hand to tap both arrows to positioning his hands to be able to touch both arrows while holding the iPad.

One of my favorite things about the app was the bright colorful ocean scene as well as the ability to pick your own character.  My older son quickly got the moves down to position his character in place to catch the treasure.  He quickly positioned both hands on the arrows so he could catch treasures more quickly and earn rewards.  The colors were bright and there is a lot of great interaction and items you can earn including a crown, trophy and more!  He also enjoyed catching the rocks so he could weight down the net to earn more treasures.  He also liked recycling at the end of the level – especially making pails.  This wasn’t something that was immediately apparent to him when he first played, but he looked forward to it at the end of each level.

In terms of improvements, I wish there was a multi-player mode so you didn’t have to reset each time if a different child played.  My son did also get frustrated at times with the three miss rule which meant you had to restart a level if you missed more than three items, perhaps there could be a toggle which lets you turn off this for those just learning.  My son also wished he could create his own avatar which looked like him which might be a fun enhancement in the future.

There are no in-app purchases or advertising.  There is a parental gated area (tap the key) where you can access social media, subscribe via email, rate and review as well as reset the app.   The app is COPPA compliant.

Overall, this is a fun app aimed at preschool aged children through early elementary school. I liked that it helped my son work on his “prediction” skills as well as figuring out which way to move to capture the bucket.

Mindfulness for Children – Meditations for kid by Jannik Holgersen – Review

screen mindfulness for children

A parent’s and teacher’s delight! Mindfulness for Children provides relaxing sounds of nature to help children calm down and improve focus/concentration. A calm, reassuring voice gives step by step audio instructions on how to meditate. With descriptions and terms aimed at children, users are taken through body scans, visualizations and breathing exercises.

What we love…

Descriptions/explanations detailing the goals/outcomes of each exercise; ability to provide feedback and the authors desire to receive this feedback to make improvements.

What we’d love to see…

More and more guided exercises! .

Summary

Beautifully spoken meditation exercises aimed specifically at children! Exercises guide children to a calm/relaxed state using easy to understand imagery.

Our Rating

Mindfulness for Children was created in Denmark through the joint effort of a psycho-motor therapist and a technical expert with a vested interest in mindfulness meditation. It is used by Denmark schools with great success and is recommended by several Danish child psychologists.

The developers describe “mindfulness” as being aware of what happens while it happens. The app is recommended for children ages 5 and up, but the authors caution to respect your child’s wish not to participate: “Children can be encouraged to meditate, but it should happen voluntarily.”

image

The app provides three guided meditations for children and two sets of relaxing nature sounds to help children calm/refocus. Our testers (and their mama ☺) appreciated the calming nature sounds the best to unwind from a busy day and to enter a sound sleep state. The meditation exercises left us feeling ready to tackle difficult schoolwork or to key into those complicated/coordinated movements for a series of new dance steps. With exercises being brief (but effective), meditations can easily be used by teachers to refocus a whole classroom to the tasks at hand vs all the extraneous thoughts/distractions.

image

A special feature of Mindfulness for Children is the support given to parents. Each exercise provides a detailed description of intended outcomes, how to gently get to those outcomes, and suggestions of how to apply what children have learned throughout the day. The authors encourage users to take part in the improvement process and further development of the program via social media and/or email.

Mindfulness for Children was a welcome addition to our collection of apps – its one of the few that helps children refocus on life outside of electronics. This app brings the authors’ mission to life: “Put a smile on your mind anytime, anywhere and everyday.” ☺

Tiny Play Box HD – Ten Fun and Simple Educational Activities for Kids by Approviders ltd – Review

What we love…

A variety of interesting learning games and fun activities that are age-appropriate for preschoolers.

What we’d love to see…

An option to choose the level of difficulty or randomised difficulty, separate controls for sound effects and background music, ability to reset individual games.

Summary

A deceptively simple educational app for developing pre-academic skills for preschoolers.

Our Rating

Tiny Play Box HD – Ten Fun and Simple Educational Activities for Kids by Approviders ltd contains 10 different preschool learning games and fun activities that will keep preschoolers gainfully engaged for a period of time. There are no verbal or written instructions in this app but the games/activities are easy to pick up and all children can play regardless of the languages they use. It is also kid-safe, making it a suitable choice of educational app to consider for your preschoolers.

All the 10 games/activites are accessible from the main page and the game icons are self-explanatory. The learning games start off easy and become progressively more difficult but as your preschoolers play more, they will begin to get different difficulty levels of play. While this random factor gives more variety to each game, I think it’s better to also provide an option to choose the level of difficulty appropriate for the child.

Pair Matching
First, kids are shown between 4 and 16 color or picture cards and they have to find pairs of the same color or picture cards. At the higher level of difficulty, the game becomes a memory match game where the cards are turned over and kids have to remember the card positions and find the matching pairs from memory. Kids can tap on the bear character to skip the current set of cards.

Memory Matching
2-4 color/picture cards are flashed for a second and then turned over immediately. Another card is shown and your child has to recall which of the earlier cards matches with it. This forces your child to stay focused while developing his visual memory. Again, kids are able to change the current set of cards by tapping the bear.

Feast Time
This is an endless game of keeping hungry kids away from the food table by tapping them (and turning them to creature balls) before they reach the food.

Catch the Balloons
Tilt the iPad to move the bear sideways to catch the falling balloons. The balloons drop one at a time and they blink once before dropping, giving kids time to react and plan.

Go Fish
Kids help the bear to catch the ‘wanted fish’ from among other similar fishes. This works on visual discrimination and eye tracking as the kids observe the moving fishes.

Paint Box
Features a 16-color palette, paint or pencil mode, 6 stickers, 7 background designs and ability to save up to 8 pieces of work. I like that you can use your own photos as background as well!

Snack Time
Kids use their matching skills to serve the correct food to the animals. This is the only game that requires your child to drag items instead of tapping.

20131117-011535.jpg
Beach Day
Two bears are bouncing a ball back and forth to each other and your kids have to tap each bear at the correct moment to keep the ball up. As the game progresses, more balls are bounced at the same time and it can be quite challenging for younger kids. I like this game the most as it keeps the players alert at all times and requires quite accurate timing and distance judgement. The speed in this game is reasonable, not too fast but it gets faster as the game progresses, which builds faster reaction time.

20131117-011528.jpgCheese Magic
Baby Mouse is to secure pieces of cheese and bring them to the King Mouse. Some of the cheese is hidden behind other items and kids have to think about how to retrieve the cheese and not bring unwanted items to the King Mouse. Great for exercising problem solving!

Into Space
The objective of this game is to get the owl to pop the gnomes by tapping the spot where the owl should fly to in order to reach the gnomes. Your kids can plan to guide the owl in such a way that more gnomes can be popped in one movement.

The design of the games is simple and clean with cartoon illustrations, there is no time limit and no penalty for mistakes, only positive reinforcement for good work. The app is kid-safe and there are lots to do that will keep your child engaged for a long time. The games are all very easy to play but they are deceptively simple. Tiny Play Box HD has a good collection of fun learning games that supports your preschoolers’ intellectual development (like problem solving, observation, concentration, matching, visual discrimination), motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Worth checking out as an app for developing pre-academic skills.
