EduGuru Maths Kids age 3-5 educational games by The Game Creators – Review

eduguru-maths-all-games-screenshot-1

As an app reviewer who has tried many Maths app, I don’t get impressed very often. But EduGuru Maths Kids age 3-5 educational games by The Game Creators made me sit up and pay attention with its well designed Maths games that introduce Maths concepts progressively to young players in a visual way.

What we love…

A variety of skill building games to help students learn and practise a range of Maths concepts.

What we’d love to see…

Ability to repeat the audio of instructions for all games.

Summary

A well designed app that introduces Maths concepts progressively to young players while challenging them to think and learn beyond memorisation.

Our Rating

There are altogether 8 games, each with several game levels, targeting a range of important mathematical concepts and skills:-

* Cosmic Counting – counting to 20, more or less, number patterns, number order, number sets, odd one out
* Meadow Maths – counting on and back, adding up and taking away up to 10
* Shape Sort – shapes, colours, colouring shapes, odd one out, pattern puzzles
* Fishing Fun – size, weight, comparing quantities, high and low, far and near, big and small
* Space Solver – matching, doubling, halving, sharing out items
* Captain Clock – minute hand, hour hand, setting the analogue clock to the hour
* Money Pig – UK coins – 1 pence to 2 pounds, putting coins in order of value, coin values
* Match Up – shape identification, counting to 15

image

From the home screen, kids can choose to play any of the games and they have to complete each game level in order to unlock the next. You can set up the game levels to be partially or even all unlocked if you find the lower levels to be too basic for your child. This level control however, applies to all the user accounts (up to 6 accounts).

image

What I like about this app is the gradual incremental level of difficulty in the games where a new skill is added one level at a time while building upon the skills that were practiced in earlier levels. For example in the Meadow Maths game, children are at first given the exact number of farm animals to put into the pen, then they are given more than the required number of animals to add into the pen. After that, kids practise taking away the extra animals out of the pen before they are tasked to find out how many animals to add or take away from the pen to match the number requested. A number sentence is displayed at the top and the app will show if the answer submitted by the child is correct or not, visually.

image

If kids find the progress to be too fast, repeated play of the earlier game levels (different questions each time) will help them build confidence. Each game level is short in duration and kids can switch to another game before they get bored or frustrated. Or they can turn to the nursery rhymes on the home screen for entertainment.

image

There are many Maths skills that are being introduced here. Some of the more advanced concepts are even appropriate for the early elementary level. However, there is no direct teaching in most of the game levels. Instead, the app equips you with the game descriptions and objectives. While kids will learn as they play the games in sequence, more challenging concepts like doubling and halving (early multiplication and division) will need your guidance.

image

You can see how well your child is progressing by looking at the number of stars and the type of medal (bronze, silver and gold) he/she has achieved for each game – straightforward progress tracking and simple rewards that will appeal to younger children.

This app is the first in the EduGuru series of educational apps for the 3-5 age group, the other three being English, Science & Technology and Art & Music. Based on the high quality shown in this Maths app, I anticipate more creative skill building EduGuru games that will make children think. Meanwhile, download the free lite version of the app and try some of the games. It’s worth the time and effort!

Hop Star : Fun Visual Math Learning Game for Grade 1 to 5 Kids – Review

screen hop star

Hop Star : Fun Visual Math Learning Game for Grade 1 to 5 Kids by Skidos Learning is an addictive platform mobile game that requires players to solve many math problems just to keep the game going. I say ‘many’ because the amount of time I spent doing math in Hop Star is at least 10 times more than the amount I spent on the game itself. I admit I’m not good at such games but I refuse to give up until I complete a game. I can’t accept defeat because the game is actually very simple but it is so hard to score points. It’s so much easier solving the math questions. I guess that is the whole purpose of Hop Star!

What we love…

The huge database of questions covering grade 1 – 5 math topics.

What we’d love to see…

Option to pre-select the players’ choice of math topics.

Summary

A fun mobile game that has players spend more time sharpening their math skills than being on the game itself.

Our Rating

The goal of the game is to keep your game character/hopper alive as you guide it across a series of obstacles to get out of the jungle. You tap or hold your finger anywhere on the screen and release it to get your hopper to jump over rivers and different types of dangers while collecting coins. The longer you hold, the further your hopper will jump. You will need to have good estimation, great timing and quick reflexes in order to play well.

A player needs to be alert as there are so many ways your character can get eliminated in this game. You lose a life when the hopper gets hit by trucks, eaten by alligators, struck by falling elephants or just dropped into the rivers but you can revive it with game coins. The only problem is that the number of coins required increases exponentially with each subsequent revival which means that you always run out of coins. But you can also earn coins very quickly by answering math questions.

Here, players can choose the type of math questions they want to do. From grade 1 to 5, there is a huge database of questions covering a comprehensive list of topics like numbers & counting, comparison, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, factors, prime and composite numbers, algebra and place values. Players are tested in 3 question styles – visual, mental and language. While the visual questions help players better understand the math problems and solve them easily, the constant exposure to the same type of questions give kids the confidence to tackle similar questions outside the app. I especially like the leading questions for the game based questions which guide kids to focus on the important information. The questions even feature the game characters to up the cute factor.

This fast-paced game is very addictive and I honestly couldn’t put it down. The gameplay is exciting and fun. I was surprised that my competitive older kids also enjoyed the game even though at first, they found it impossible to advance in the game. The pixel art graphics is bright and colorful. The game is easy to play and the controls are responsive. There are no penalties for wrong answers, only rewards and fun. Unlike many mobile games, there is no need to use real money to buy game coins in Hop Star. Players can play, revive characters and unlock new characters just by doing math.

What interest parents and teachers will be the progress report that lets you track individual child’s progress across different skills and time periods, allowing you to see where they need help and more practice. You will need to register your email address in order to view the reports of all the players. Do note that Hop Star requires an active internet connection for the updating of reports as well as the loading of questions from its large question database.

All kids love to play mobile games. Your kids will be most motivated to do the challenging visual and mental math problems in Hop Star just to be able to stay in their game and have fun. Trust me, they will be spending lots more time sharpening their math skills than being on the game itself!

Abaquest by Rajnikant Rao – Review

abaquest

What we love…

Comprehensive curriculum that allows you or your child to practice math skills using an abacus and encourages learning at their own pace

What we’d love to see…

More natural “narration” especially of US English, clicking sound when beads are moved into place on the abacus

Summary

Comprehensive learning curriculum designed to teach math to all ages

Our Rating

.

Abaquest by Ranjnikant Rao is an abacus based learning course designed to teach or enhance fundamental math skills using an Abacus.  The first four levels (A – C) are free allowing you to try the app before purchasing the remaining content via in-app purchase.  The app starts with basic concepts including an introduction to the abacus and then continues through addition, subtraction, multiplication and division all using the beads on the abacus to complete the steps.  The app allows for multiple users meaning it can be used in a home school situation as well as in a more traditional classroom.

Using a six step methodology it provides an understanding and then allows you to observe examples, identify errors, guess various expressions, do the physical movement and then challenge yourself with math problems.

learning_method

The app provides a huge amount of content that will allow you to practice learning basic and more advanced math skills – I enjoyed trying out the harder levels and honing my skills.  There is also a parent dashboard which allows you to see how your child has done as well as allowing them to earn a “certificate” for successfully completing each level.  If your child has trouble with a level, it continues to drill you on the content to ensure that you have learned it prior to moving on to more complex problems.  There are three narrated voices including American English.  The voices within the app are: US English (computer generated), UK English (human narrated) and Indian English. For purposes of the review I used “Lisa” the computer generated US voice to provide narration. The voice can change between levels if you wish – although if you switch you may have Lisa on one level and Emily on another. As a parent, I suggest testing out the voices yourself and then picking one and staying with it for the entire app. My son was confused at times when I was trying out the different voices. I also liked that the app would move as fast or as slow as necessary to ensure that concepts were taught and learned within it.

In terms of enhancements I would also like to see rewards somehow incorporated as my son when using the app at times felt like the “level” was taking a bit too long especially when he was struggling to complete a section. I would also like to see more natural narration of the voices in a future version.

The app contains a parental gate which requires the solving of a math problem to ensure that the parent gets access to the IAP or other parental locked areas.  The gate works well and will not allow your child to “guess” the answer.  The developer is continuing to add new content to the app as well as enhance it providing more educational content.

This app provides a comprehensive math curriculum designed to teach or enhance math skills for all ages.  I would recommend trying the first four levels (A-D) free first to ensure it is a good fit, and then purchasing the remaining content if it is a good fit for your child/children.  In addition, I would suggest that you work with children first to help them understand the physical abacus before using the app as my son at first had a hard time grasping the concept. As a parent, I also liked the app as it allowed me to “brush up” on my fundamental math skills and encourage my son to continue learning math concepts.

GOZOA – The Key Quest – Review

20140426-114024.jpg

What we love…

Great variety of Math questions (4 math operations and time) and different levels of difficulty suitable for all elementary grades and challenging gameplay.

What we’d love to see…

More exciting rewards.

Summary

A polished platform game with just the right amount of Math distractions.

Our Rating

I have been spending the last few days exercising both my fingers and mind with Gozoa’s latest educational game app, The Key Quest and I think your kids in elementary school will love it!

20140426-114054.jpg

The Key Quest is actually two solid game apps in one slick package (another game will be added in May). Each consists of a platform game with lots of challenges thrown in to keep the player on his toes, with Math questions being the ultimate test.

20140426-114612.jpg

The story behind the Key Quest is that the Villain had captured Gozoa’s friends and Gozoa is determined to track him down and retrieve the keys that will free the friends. The first place he has to conquer is the Snowflake Isles and only when he has obtained a key here will the Golden Canyon be unlocked. It will not be an easy quest for sure. There are different Magical Obstacles to overcome, many enemies to avoid or destroy and Mathematical Assignments to complete.

20140426-114553.jpg

The Math Assignments on Snowflake Isles will have players perform addition and subtraction with numbers from 0-100 as well as multiplication and division with numbers 1-9. On the other hand, Golden Canyon requires the player to read time on analog and digital clocks. There are 6 different levels of difficulty (which the player can choose freely) to cater to students in all elementary grade levels. The questions within each level of difficulty are varied, randomized and plentiful.

20140426-114103.jpg

The games themselves are exciting and will sure to give your kids many hours of play. The Quest starts off easy in the Snowflake Isles but it gets the player warmed up for the real challenge in Golden Canyon. There are lots of action in the underground maze and you will need to use the overview map to help you see where you are now, where you are heading and how to reach there. Players can also seek guidance from Fluffy the Helper or they may want to read the game information before starting.

20140426-131711.jpg

The controls for making Gozoa move left/right and jump are smooth but it took me a few rounds of play to be really good at making Gozoa move faster and jump more accurately. Kids are definitely better in such physics-based platform games! My #3 completed each round effortlessly and even showed me a trick or two!

20140426-131652.jpg

Given how well done the games were, the rewards given in this app pale in comparison. Diamonds exchanged and earned at the end of the game are only good for buying furniture, decorative items and toys for Gozoa’s House. These may still be acceptable for lower elementary grades but older kids would expect something more exciting.

20140426-131700.jpg

With customizable levels of difficulty, this app will grow with a child’s mathematical abilities and kids of different abilities (up to 3 profiles) can share the same app. Additional features available are the options to switch to Dutch language, change the color scheme of the app as well as separate controls for music and sound effects.

Given a choice, kids will much prefer to play a mobile game then to do Math drills. The Key Quest is challenging and exciting with just the right amount of math distractions. Your elementary kids will enjoy playing The Key Quest (and practising Math) for hours.
