What we love…

I love the well-made animations, ease-of-use (including video tutorial) and customization options as well as the ability to share statistics and audio recordings.

What we’d love to see…

The app is solid and I could find nothing lacking as presented, but an option to purchase other languages or specialty packs could open up the playing field even more.

Summary

TenseBuilder is a strong and well-made app that is easy to use and is adaptable to the learning needs of each user. The huge list of customization options make this an app that can continue to be useful as a users learning progresses and the sharing features can be vital in teacher/parent/therapist correspondence.

Our Rating

TenseBuilder Mobile Education Store has another great new app available that is geared to speech and language for kids that need a better way of learning. Founded in 2008 by Kyle Tomson, who found apps lacking and expensive for his special needs daughter, Mobile Education Store continues to raise the standard for education apps.  TenseBuilder  is the latest endeavor by Kyle and his team and is packed with features to help learn verb tenses. The app has 48 humorous (but clear) video models of each verb illustrating each tense. I rarely list all custom options available in a review, but I think it’s necessary here to fully illustrate how TenseBuilder can be utilized. Users have a plethora of customization options available including;

Student name
Audio instructions (Off/On)
Correct Answer Reinforcement (Off/On)
Record Correct Answer (Off/On)
Level of Play (2 levels)
Maximum Number of Level 2 Choices (3 to 7)
Tense (Future/Present/Past/All)
Verbs (Regular/Irregular/All)
Select Verbs (48)
Lesson Style (Long/Short)
TenseBuilder also includes a thorough video tutorial, an option to save sentences and statistics report that can be emailed. Audio recordings of users can also be saved and shared.
TenseBuilder is very user-friendly. As a parent and not a specialist or educator, any app that holds my hand through the process and is easy to learn is a big winner in my book. I love that the videos are engaging and do not have a “special needs” feel to them. I tried them with each of my children and received equally positive feedback. I was especially enamored with the audio recording option because having quick feedback seems to make a huge difference with getting my kids to participate.
I enjoyed reviewing this app so much that instead of finding flaws, I found myself thinking of potential expansion options Mobile Education Store might want to consider. Possible ideas are specialized verb packs for different situations like sports, science and computing or learning second languages like French and Spanish.
I think TenseBuilder is a strong and well-made app that is easy to use and is adaptable to the learning needs of each user. The huge list of customization options make this an app that can continue to be useful as a users learning progresses and the sharing features can be vital in teacher/parent/therapist correspondence.

What we love…

Settings options, customization of words, ability to change sounds, level position targeted all on one page, games

What we’d love to see…

I’d love to see this program targeting sounds from an apraxia approach. Sound, cv, vc etc.

Summary

A must have app when working with young children who are at least at the word level!

Our Rating

Articulation Carnival ProArticulation Carnival Pro is the biggest hit with my youngest kids working on articulation skills and surprisingly the older kids choose this app as well!  I have never had a student say a program is too young for them if they get to be the one to choose it, only when they want to play something else because it is too hard for them.

Articulation carnival has the most choices for selecting phonemes (47) I have ever seen. There are vocalic r options as well as s, l and r blends. The amazing part is you choose the blends your child needs to work on. For example if they only need tr and gr you can work on only those two and not all r blends! you can also choose the specific words you want to target. You can choose word, phrase or sentence level and can even practice all three for each word if you want. Students can press a play button to hear the stimulus, they can record their voice and listen to it. The therapist can mark correct, approximation or wrong, as well as make notes on every page at each level.

iPad Screenshot 2For each correct answer the student earns a balloon and once they have collected enough balloons they get to play a game! The therapist sets the number of correct responses needed to earn a game. Choices include: spray ducks, basketball, balloon darts and the strength hammer. I usually limit game time to 30 seconds for each game and then go back to practicing. the program allows for changing student, changing sound from the chosen sounds for the session, position of word,  and level (word, phrase, sentence) easily all on the same page.

iPad Screenshot 3

There are many settings. The therapist can set different or same sounds for correct, incorrect and approximation sound. for the games you can set the basketball game time in increments of 5 seconds from 10-50 seconds, the balloon game reward from 1-5, and the ducks reward game from 10-40. The therapist can choose to show text, random paging, show score, enable reward and have game music. Rewards games can be set to after 1-10 correct responses. Data can be backed up and restored. And Custom words can be added! Many of my students can’t say their name which is very important to them and their parents, I love to see their faces the first time they see their own picture and get to practice their own name or any other word that is important to them. Reports can be emailed for a student. They can be generated by goal/ sound or by date. Virtual Speech Center is quick to respond to questions and make adjustments to games based upon feedback.

I am very impressed with this app – the settings options, customization of words, ability to change sounds, level position targeted all on one page, and the built-in reward games. My students love it -a must have app when working with young children who are at least at the word level!

EverDock Universal Dock for Smartphones and Tablets by FŪZ Designs – Review

Pros …

Works with any brand of  smartphone or tablet, simple elegant design, very stable, can be used with or without a case.

Cons…

Need to provide your own charger and cable (only micro-USB cable included)

Summary

If you are looking for a simple way to turn your smartphone or tablet’s charger and cable into an elegant desktop charging dock this is a great option.

recommended-by-the-imums

Have you ever bought a dock for your Smartphone or tablet, but when you later upgrade your device your dock isn’t compatible with your new device and sits unused in a drawer?  FŪZ Designs aims to put an end to that with the EverDock, which is designed to be used with any smartphone or tablet. The EverDock was launched via a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign, and is now available for purchase.

It is a very simple, yet elegant solution- a solid block of machined aluminum, with a micro-suction base that keeps the dock firmly in place. It comes with a micro-USB cable and is also compatible with Apple 30 pin and lightning cables (which you need to supply yourself). The secret to its versatility is that it is designed to easily allow you to change cables so you can update it with your own charging cable for whatever is the latest and greatest tablet or smartphone.

Setting it up is simple – first you peel away the protective plastic from the base – this reveals a channel in the base and a hole that leads to the top of the dock. Inside the hole is the cable adapter which you remove. Thread the cable through the hole and through the cable adapter, then put the adapter back in place. You don’t need to use the adapter with the Apple 30 pin cable, with other cables it is used to hold the charging tip firmly in place. Next you push the cable into the channel, where small teeth cover it, to keep it in place. Turn over the dock and install one of the silicone dock bumpers if needed. The EverDock comes with 2 different thickness bumpers- use the thickest if no case, the thinner one for a thin case and no bumper for a thick case. The bumpers can be installed and removed quickly if you use the dock with 2 devices that have different cases.

everdock3

The EverDock is surprisingly stable – the weight of the aluminum base plus the micro-suction keep it very stable even with an iPad on it. The EverDock comes in 4 color choices- silver, gold, black and  space grey.  I reviewed the silver – which fits in really well with my Apple products and looks simple and elegant on a desktop. The  EverDock is not a charger – it is designed to work with your device’s own charger and cable to turn it into a simple elegant stand and charging dock. Because it utilizes your device’s charger and cable it can continue to be used even if you change to a new smartphone or tablet.

Bottom line: If you are looking for a simple way to turn your smartphone or tablet’s charger and cable into an elegant desktop charging dock this is a great option. The machined aluminum base looks stylish, and its weight plus the micro-suction base provide a surprisingly stable dock in a small footprint.

The EverDock is available from FŪZ Designs , Amazon and other retailers RRP $49. An EverDock Duo which holds 2 devices is also available.

What we love…

engaging book, highly educational, huge amount of historical information made interesting for children

What we’d love to see…

I love it the way it is!

Summary

A fictional e-book, audio book, with historical artifacts, videos and insights, all rolled into one. Beautifully written and illustrated, containing a huge amount of historical and equestrian information.

War Horse Featuring Michael Morpurgo

War Horse is an app based on the beloved book of the same name by Michael Morpurgo.  It is an e-book and audio book in one.  It includes a World War I timeline full of fascinating facts, key events, stories, photos, and maps.  It also includes several videos, one of which features the author.

From the moment I opened this app, I was completely impressed with it.  The layout on the home page is beautiful and beckons you to take a journey in time with a remarkable and magnificent horse named Joey.

iPad Screenshot 2Joey is a farm horse who suddenly finds himself in the middle of World War I after he is sold by his owner to the British Army.  The story is so well written you cannot help but fall in love with Joey.  He is endearing and my daughter and I found it very hard to put the book/app down.  It is a first person, or perhaps I should say first animal, narrative.  It was different and very interesting to see war through a horse’s perspective.

The e-book is a breeze to navigate.  On the top center of the screen is the chapter title and immediately to the right of it is a small arrow that opens a drop down menu that allows you to jump to any chapter with just a simple click.  Further on the right is a font button that allows you to make the text bigger or smaller, and a timeline button that brings up sidebar with thumbnails of historical information from the same period as the current chapter.

To the left of the chapter title is the home button and the audio button.  Pressing on the audio button will start the narration at the beginning of the chapter.  To have the narration start at a different point, simply click on the sentence you want to start listening to.  Pressing on the button again will stop the narration, and pressing it a third time will start the narration where it left off.  The book is narrated by the author himself.  I have to say that Michael Murongo is not only a brilliant writer, but an excellent narrator as well.

iPad Screenshot 4

The timeline is a wealth of information about World War I, mostly as it takes place in Belgium and France.  Some key events from other countries are included as well.  It has the same drop down navigation as the book.  It can be read chronologically, or by theme/topic.  Information is given in short and engaging pieces, making them easily digestible and even memorable to children.

The Insights section is outstanding.  It contains numerous videos that do indeed provide insight into the book, the author, World War I, and horses.  I am amazed at how much information is included in this app and how well they are presented.

I love this app and there is not a single thing I would change about it.  In fact, I have already incorporated it into my daughter’s History and English subjects.  I whole heartedly recommend this app to those with older children.  This is an app you simply don’t want to miss out on.
