Mathemagics Multiplication by SlimCricket – Review

screen mathemagics

What we love…

An effortless approach to learning the times tables using fun stories.

What we’d love to see…

Include the narrative text in the stories and a story quiz in the training mode to help students better recall the details of the stories before attempting the multiplication questions to ensure greater success.

Summary

Mathemagics Multiplication offers an unconventional but effective story mnemonics technique for memorizing the times tables of 1 to 10.

Our Rating

How do children learn the multiplication tables? First, they learn how to multiply, then they need to memorize the multiplication tables so that they can quickly solve math problems. This usually means lots of practice through boring drills and repetitive exercises. But what if we present you with an approach that can help speed up the memorization process while being fun at the same time? Will you give it a try even if the approach is unconventional or untested?

Mathemagics Multiplication by SlimCricket is a new app that aims to help students memorize the multiplication tables in a whole new way using stories. While memory techniques using songs and stories are not new, it is still uncommon to have students use stories in memorizing the times tables.

But even if you are skeptical, it’s still worth your time to download Mathemagics Multiplication’s free lite version app to read the parents’ guide and let your child have a go at the trial.

Before getting to the stories, students are introduced to the characters in the stories. These are actually the numbers 1 to 10, each with its own name and a personality that helps define how they interact with other characters (numbers). The first section of the app ‘I discover’ is devoted to this character association using a character quiz. This is easy as each character is shaped like its number counterpart.

Once the student has successfully completed the quiz for a character, he can then proceed to watch the multiplication stories for that number in the ‘I learn’ section. Each story is a short cartoon animation and works on the child’s visual memory of what the story is about. There is no explanation for how the times table work, students just need to watch and learn the story. The unique stories help students to form a memorable association between the characters/numbers in a multiplication fact so that when they see the numbers, they remember the stories and then the multiplication facts that they represent.

IMG_9340

What I like in this section is the ’trick’ to help students remember only half of the tables. Your child (or even yourself) may not be aware of this because this is often not highlighted. This trick works well in this app because students don’t need to work through each table by repeatedly adding the same number. They just need to learn the stories and the stories for half of the tables are the same, for example the story for 2 X 4 is the same as that for 4 X 2.

After the students have gone through all the stories from a times table, they can then move on to the levelled exercises in the ‘I play’ section where their memory of the stories is tested. Here, they can choose between the training or game mode, the difference is that points for correct answers are only given in the game mode. The multiplication questions in the ‘I play’ section are first presented in the form of the characters and then the mnemonics are gradually phased out as the students progress.

IMG_9335

After completing the tests in the ‘I play’ section, students can go on to do even more practice in “My challenges’ and earn rewards. Besides the mnemonic training, this app packs in lots of levelled quizzes and challenges to help your child master their times tables in the shortest time possible.

To keep students motivated to complete more quizzes and challenges, points collected from the game mode can be used to buy a house and the furniture for each character in ‘My rewards’ section.

For parents and teachers, you can track up to 3 students’ progress in the full version app ($4.99) while the school version app ($7.99) allows you to create up to 40 profiles.

For children, memorizing a silly story is definitely easier than a multiplication fact. This app takes advantage of children’s innate ability to retain information that has been presented to them visually. It does not take away the importance of understanding the concept of multiplication. It just provides students with a quick and easy way to memorize the tables which in turn speeds up problem solving and reduce frustrations.

You may not be comfortable with this non-traditional method of mastering the times tables, but do keep an open mind and let your child try it out. The free trial version of the app allows your child to learn some of multiplication facts from the 4 times table. My youngest hasn’t gone through all the stories yet but for those that he did, he gave faster and more accurate answers after using the app. This app is definitely worth a try and you may be surprised at how well it works for your child.

EduGuru Maths Kids age 3-5 educational games by The Game Creators – Review

eduguru-maths-all-games-screenshot-1

As an app reviewer who has tried many Maths app, I don’t get impressed very often. But EduGuru Maths Kids age 3-5 educational games by The Game Creators made me sit up and pay attention with its well designed Maths games that introduce Maths concepts progressively to young players in a visual way.

What we love…

A variety of skill building games to help students learn and practise a range of Maths concepts.

What we’d love to see…

Ability to repeat the audio of instructions for all games.

Summary

A well designed app that introduces Maths concepts progressively to young players while challenging them to think and learn beyond memorisation.

Our Rating

There are altogether 8 games, each with several game levels, targeting a range of important mathematical concepts and skills:-

* Cosmic Counting – counting to 20, more or less, number patterns, number order, number sets, odd one out
* Meadow Maths – counting on and back, adding up and taking away up to 10
* Shape Sort – shapes, colours, colouring shapes, odd one out, pattern puzzles
* Fishing Fun – size, weight, comparing quantities, high and low, far and near, big and small
* Space Solver – matching, doubling, halving, sharing out items
* Captain Clock – minute hand, hour hand, setting the analogue clock to the hour
* Money Pig – UK coins – 1 pence to 2 pounds, putting coins in order of value, coin values
* Match Up – shape identification, counting to 15

image

From the home screen, kids can choose to play any of the games and they have to complete each game level in order to unlock the next. You can set up the game levels to be partially or even all unlocked if you find the lower levels to be too basic for your child. This level control however, applies to all the user accounts (up to 6 accounts).

image

What I like about this app is the gradual incremental level of difficulty in the games where a new skill is added one level at a time while building upon the skills that were practiced in earlier levels. For example in the Meadow Maths game, children are at first given the exact number of farm animals to put into the pen, then they are given more than the required number of animals to add into the pen. After that, kids practise taking away the extra animals out of the pen before they are tasked to find out how many animals to add or take away from the pen to match the number requested. A number sentence is displayed at the top and the app will show if the answer submitted by the child is correct or not, visually.

image

If kids find the progress to be too fast, repeated play of the earlier game levels (different questions each time) will help them build confidence. Each game level is short in duration and kids can switch to another game before they get bored or frustrated. Or they can turn to the nursery rhymes on the home screen for entertainment.

image

There are many Maths skills that are being introduced here. Some of the more advanced concepts are even appropriate for the early elementary level. However, there is no direct teaching in most of the game levels. Instead, the app equips you with the game descriptions and objectives. While kids will learn as they play the games in sequence, more challenging concepts like doubling and halving (early multiplication and division) will need your guidance.

image

You can see how well your child is progressing by looking at the number of stars and the type of medal (bronze, silver and gold) he/she has achieved for each game – straightforward progress tracking and simple rewards that will appeal to younger children.

This app is the first in the EduGuru series of educational apps for the 3-5 age group, the other three being English, Science & Technology and Art & Music. Based on the high quality shown in this Maths app, I anticipate more creative skill building EduGuru games that will make children think. Meanwhile, download the free lite version of the app and try some of the games. It’s worth the time and effort!

Hop Star : Fun Visual Math Learning Game for Grade 1 to 5 Kids – Review

screen hop star

Hop Star : Fun Visual Math Learning Game for Grade 1 to 5 Kids by Skidos Learning is an addictive platform mobile game that requires players to solve many math problems just to keep the game going. I say ‘many’ because the amount of time I spent doing math in Hop Star is at least 10 times more than the amount I spent on the game itself. I admit I’m not good at such games but I refuse to give up until I complete a game. I can’t accept defeat because the game is actually very simple but it is so hard to score points. It’s so much easier solving the math questions. I guess that is the whole purpose of Hop Star!

What we love…

The huge database of questions covering grade 1 – 5 math topics.

What we’d love to see…

Option to pre-select the players’ choice of math topics.

Summary

A fun mobile game that has players spend more time sharpening their math skills than being on the game itself.

Our Rating

The goal of the game is to keep your game character/hopper alive as you guide it across a series of obstacles to get out of the jungle. You tap or hold your finger anywhere on the screen and release it to get your hopper to jump over rivers and different types of dangers while collecting coins. The longer you hold, the further your hopper will jump. You will need to have good estimation, great timing and quick reflexes in order to play well.

A player needs to be alert as there are so many ways your character can get eliminated in this game. You lose a life when the hopper gets hit by trucks, eaten by alligators, struck by falling elephants or just dropped into the rivers but you can revive it with game coins. The only problem is that the number of coins required increases exponentially with each subsequent revival which means that you always run out of coins. But you can also earn coins very quickly by answering math questions.

Here, players can choose the type of math questions they want to do. From grade 1 to 5, there is a huge database of questions covering a comprehensive list of topics like numbers & counting, comparison, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, factors, prime and composite numbers, algebra and place values. Players are tested in 3 question styles – visual, mental and language. While the visual questions help players better understand the math problems and solve them easily, the constant exposure to the same type of questions give kids the confidence to tackle similar questions outside the app. I especially like the leading questions for the game based questions which guide kids to focus on the important information. The questions even feature the game characters to up the cute factor.

This fast-paced game is very addictive and I honestly couldn’t put it down. The gameplay is exciting and fun. I was surprised that my competitive older kids also enjoyed the game even though at first, they found it impossible to advance in the game. The pixel art graphics is bright and colorful. The game is easy to play and the controls are responsive. There are no penalties for wrong answers, only rewards and fun. Unlike many mobile games, there is no need to use real money to buy game coins in Hop Star. Players can play, revive characters and unlock new characters just by doing math.

What interest parents and teachers will be the progress report that lets you track individual child’s progress across different skills and time periods, allowing you to see where they need help and more practice. You will need to register your email address in order to view the reports of all the players. Do note that Hop Star requires an active internet connection for the updating of reports as well as the loading of questions from its large question database.

All kids love to play mobile games. Your kids will be most motivated to do the challenging visual and mental math problems in Hop Star just to be able to stay in their game and have fun. Trust me, they will be spending lots more time sharpening their math skills than being on the game itself!

DragonBox Numbers by WeWantToKnow – Review and Giveaway

screen dragonbox numbers

DragonBox Numbers by WeWantToKnow AS is a fun and colorful way to learn about numbers, how they work and how to use them. WeWantToKnow AS are also the developers behind award-winning apps DragonBox Algebra 5+, DragonBox Algebra 12+ and DragonBox Elements. Children can play with cute characters called Nooms by stacking them, combining them, sorting them, slicing them or by just playing with them.

The app is divided into three games: Sandbox, Puzzles and Ladder.

What we love…

The cute Nooms which help you understand Math concepts.

What we’d love to see…

Ability to follow the players’ learning progress and achievements across devices.

Summary

A fun and colorful app with engaging games that help kids build strong number sense.

Our Rating

image

The ‘Sandbox’ game lets children build up to certain numbers by adding up Nooms together. When you add a Noom to another Noom they change colour. Each number from 1 to 10 has a different Noom. When adding, slicing and placing the Nooms, a narrator explains the additions or subtractions and lets the child know what number they are at. Great for parents and teachers to explain basic maths.

The ‘Puzzles’ game lets children solve easy puzzles with Nooms. Once a puzzle is solved, coins are provided as a reward. After accumulating a number of coins, you can swap them for different shapes (numbers, animals, vehicles, microbes, food, etc .) which in turn can be solved by slicing and placing Nooms in designated shapes to obtain more reward coins.

The ‘Ladder’ game is slightly more complex than the other two games in that children need to build larger numbers with careful thought by adding, slicing and playing around with the Nooms provided until the number is reached.

image

This app has no ads, no in-app purchases and has a parents area protected by a simple number solving query. The parents area covers what your child will learn from the app, how to play with it and choice of language (English, Danish, French, Norwegian, Spanish and Swedish). There is also an option to check your child’s progress and change player in the main menu. Be sure to create a DragonBox account to receive a story book about the Nooms and a DragonBox Numbers manual.

Even if the app is made for ages 6 to 8, my three-year-old loves playing with this app as it is fun, easy to use, colorful and she gets to learn about numbers without thinking about it. We love this fun and colorful app which makes mathematics a fun discipline. It is a great resource for parents and teachers to introduce maths to children and I definitely recommend it.

Feed Me! (US/UK English) – PencilBot School Pack by Edutainment Resources – Review and Giveaway

Educational apps for young children are becoming more and more sophisticated these days. They have better visuals and offer more creative and challenging gameplay but sometimes, a child may feel overwhelmed by all the demands on his senses. So if you are looking for an app with simpler designs but still have a high level of educational content, you should check out Feed Me! (US/UK English) – Pencilbot School Pack by Edutainment Resources.

What we love…

Questions on various language concepts.

What we’d love to see…

Option to display the questions and answers in words for vocabulary learning and a brief explanation on why a chosen answer is wrong to maximize the learning opportunities.

Summary

An all-in-one fun and stress-free educational quiz app with hundreds of questions covering a wide variety of topics for children up to early elementary level.

Our Rating

Feed Me! uses a straight forward but cute question and answer format that young children will want to try as the app looks so easy and fun to play. All they need to do is to listen to the question and feed the correct answer to the purple monster who makes such silly actions and sounds that are sure to tickle your child’s funny bone.

image

A question is posed and 3 choices of answers are given. Kids can tap the monster’s speech bubble to hear the question again or tap and hear the answer options before answering (which I encourage kids to do, so that they can think through the options before answering).

image

When the correct answer is fed to the monster, kids can hear the answer repeated for reinforcement and in some sections, the reason why the chosen answer is correct is also given (yoghurt is good for your bones). When a wrong answer is fed instead, the monster will feel sick but there is no penalty. The player is simply given the chance to answer the same question over and over until it is correctly answered. It would be great if a brief explanation on why a chosen answer is wrong, be given as well so as to maximize the learning opportunities.

image

From a parent’s perspective, this app’s strength is the wide variety of math, language arts and language concepts covered. There are hundreds of questions with a variety of question types that are based on children’s interests, plus some stimulating questions that will get even the adults thinking. You will also like that there are separate log-in for up to 4 players, each with a personalized avatar.

image

The questions are divided into 3 categories – Math, Language Arts and Language Concepts. Each category has 2 levels and each level comes with questions on different topics. When your child completes all the questions from the same topic, he gets an animated reward in the trophy room. Parents can also monitor the child’s progress by viewing the Diploma for each level of questions.

image

The Math category includes 200+ questions on color and shape recognition, counting (skip counting, counting in 5 and 10), number identification (up to 100), sorting, pattern recognition, ordinal numbers, basic mathematical equations and concepts, simple time concepts (digital and analog), positions, weight and size concepts, more/less and fractions.

The second category consists of 200 Language Arts questions on letter sounds (including long and short vowel sounds), letter identification (upper and lower case letters), rhyming, opposites, beginning/middle/ending sounds, segmenting letter sounds in words, basic vocabulary words, reading, unscrambling of words, matching objects – what goes together (e.g. a key unlocks the door).

image

The third category (which has 200 questions) on Language Concepts is my favorite as this section provides us with lots of language opportunities where we can ask our children to explain why a certain answer is chosen and why the other answers are wrong. Some of the topics covered here are:-

* Feelings (How do you feel? – I feel shy)
* Occupation (What go together – barber and scissors go together)
* Animal Sounds and Homes (Where does this animal live? – an ant lives in an ant hill)
* Weather/Seasons (What you need or see in this weather? – you need to drink lots of water in this sunny weather)
* Healthy Habits (What is good for you – eggs are full of protein)
* Safety (What keeps you safe? – look both ways before crossing the street)
* Signs (What kind of signs are these? – this means no…)
* Life cycles (What is the correct life cycle for this? – seed, sapling, fruit tree)
* Ordering of events
* Verbs (What are you doing? – I’m throwing a ball)
* Comparisons (Which is the hottest – the sun is the hottest)

image

With such a wide range of topics covered, the difficulty levels of the questions vary widely as well, from preschool to early elementary school levels. This is where I feel that the parents have to step in to choose the correct group of quiz questions for the child to play. Ideally, the adults should be on hand to guide when the children is working on the app. Find out more about this app by trying out some sample questions in the free version of Feed Me!

More or Less : Learn addition and subtraction by Marbotic – Review

image

If you have not heard about the Marbotic series of Math apps, it’s time to check them out. The iMums have reviewed 2 of their earlier apps and found them effective in helping young children learn abstract mathematical concepts using concrete objects and virtual manipulatives.

What we love…

The concrete and visual learning approach to solving simple addition and subtraction equations. The ability to customize the app for learning math facts.

What we’d love to see…

Activities that demonstrate the relationship between addition and subtraction plus the ability to input numbers by tracing or writing.

Summary

This app offers a concrete learning experience to help student progressively learn how to add and subtract up to 20 and solving equations with missing operands.

Our Rating

In 10 fingers +, children use their fingers to learn the numbers 0 to 10 and simple addition. In Up to 100, kids use special wooden number toys “10 digits” and virtual beads to learn about place values and numbers up to 100. Marbotic’s latest app, More or Less : Learn addition and subtraction continues to use beads and the wooden numbers to help students progress to doing addition and subtraction within 20.

image

Once the children have learnt the concept of numbers up 10, they are ready to discover single-digit addition and subtraction with More or Less. Beginners start with the exploratory level (chick) where they input 2 numbers (0 to 9) into a simple addition or subtraction equation and then watch the process of adding and subtracting being played out on the iPad through the movement of beads that represent the quantity of each number.

image

For addition, beads from both addends combine together to give you the sum. For subtraction, each bead from the subtrahend turns into a hungry pac-man and eats up a bead from the minuend (minuend – subtrahend = difference). The visuals and accompanying narration are clear and the cute animations are sure to captivate young children’s attention.

The app will automatically correct the equation if the subtrahend is larger than the minuend (e.g. 5-8 = ?) presenting a learning opportunity. You can also highlight other math properties such as the zero properties as your child explores with different sets of numbers to add or minus.

image

There are 2 ways to input the numbers in this app – by dragging them from the number line (called the numbers slide in the app) at the bottom of the screen or using the wooden numbers. I do not have the connected number toys to test with the app but you can read about iMum Alison’s comments on them in her review of Up to 100.

I think these toys are great for younger children but older kids should be encouraged to input their numbers by tracing or writing. I hope that the developer will consider adding this capability.

image

For the next two levels of play (hen and rooster), it is important to adjust the level of difficulty to suit your child’s ability as the default settings is set at the most challenging level. I also recommend turning on the numbers slide (number line) for reference even if your child is not using it for inputing numbers to the equations. Beginners should start with smaller ‘result in the addition’ (sum) and ‘operands in subtration’.

image

This is the intermediate level of play (hen) where students are guided bead-by-bead to solve simple addition and subraction equations. They will be prompted on which beads to tap and these beads will move automatically to show how the beads are added together (for the addition mode) or get subtracted (if they are doing subtraction). The use of the Montessori ten-bar here helps students to visualize the quantity of numbers larger than 10 and I like that the beads are arranged in 2 rows which is also helpful for pointing out even and odd numbers. However, I would prefer to have the odd bead aligned with one of the rows.

image

The most difficult level of play (rooster) challenges students to solve missing number problems by manipulating beads. Again the prompts, animations and narration here will give learners the confidence to work out the answers by themselves.

For the addition questions, I wish I have the option to switch the position of the blank, e.g. instead of 10 + ? = 18, I can sometimes change the pattern to ? + 10 = 18. It would be a wonderful demonstration of the commutative property of addition.

There are many things I like about this app and one of them is that it allows you to customize the app in such a way that kids only see certain groups of equations like doubles (1+1, 2+2, etc) and complements (e.g. sums to 10). This facilitates addition facts fluency. Do note that these work only in the hen and rooster levels of play. It would be great if we can also present other types of addition/subtraction facts (e.g. ?+3 equations, adding 10, near doubles).

It seems that I have more items on my wish list for this app than I normally do. This is because I like the features in the app and I hope it can be expanded to do even more. If you are looking for an app that offers a concrete and visual approach to teaching the concept and process of addition and subtraction before students are tasked to solving them, this is it. Check out the video below to see the app in action.

OctoMinus by Zyrobotics LLC – Review

OctoMinus is the latest switch-accessible app from Zyrobotics that allows children of all motor abilities to play arcade-style subtraction games. Like their earlier OctoPlus, OctoMinus is also designed to be fully customizable so that every child can experience success while playing and learning single-digit subtraction facts.

What we love…

Customizable gameplay that ensures more enjoyable play and learning experience for kids of all abilities.

What we’d love to see…

Direct access to the play options to change the speed of the turtles/octopus from within the game; on-screen indicator of how much ink is used/left for shooting; and game rules.

Summary

A fully customizable arcade-style subtraction game app that enables children of different abilities to experience success while playing and learning single-digit subtraction facts.

Our Rating

There are 2 modes of play in the app – Drill and Challenge. Each mode comes with a choice of 3 different skill levels – Beginner, Advanced or Expert. The objective of the gameplay in both Drill and Challenge is the same. A subtraction question appears at the top of the screen and the child has to use the octopus to shoot ink at the turtles to earn points.

While there are many arcade-styled subtraction apps in the app store, I want to highlight a few features in OctoMinus that you won’t find in most (if not all) of the other apps.

image

Firstly, instead of grouping the subtraction facts by the subtrahend (the number that is to be subtracted) in the learning mode (Drill) which is the typical approach, OctoMinus presents the facts by the subtraction difference (minuend – subtrahend = difference). For example, if you choose Drill 1, you will see all the subtraction equations that give you the answer ‘1’ e.g. such as 5-4 = ?, 10-9 = ? etc.

Secondly, To shoot ink, the child just needs to touch anywhere on the screen or use an external switch (connected through a Bluetooth switch). This makes it easy for children with motor difficulties or cognitive delays to play the games. As they gain more confidence and better skill, they can proceed to higher skill levels and adults can further fine-tune the difficulty level by adjusting the speed of the turtles and octopus in the Settings.

Other customisation options include turning off the sound effects, music, voice or background during the game if these are found to be affecting the players negatively. There is also a choice of English or Spanish language.

image

Most importantly, OctoMinus is all about success. In the Drill mode, kids will experience success all the time as all the moving turtles carry the answer to the subtraction equation. As long as you hit a turtle, you gain a point. The incentive for not tapping randomly is that if you use less ink, you earn more stars. The game ends when the time runs out. The constant audio and visual feed of the math facts goes into the childaren’s long-term memory as they play the games repeatedly. Although this app doesn’t teach your child how to subtract, it provides a stress-free way for learning the subtraction facts.

image

The Challenge mode is where players are tested on what they have learnt. For each subtraction equation that is presented, players touch the screen or switch to shoot the turtles when the octopus in the correct answer arch. There are 4 arches and 3 or 2 (instead of only 1) of them has the correct answer, again ensuring that the children have greater chance of success. They score points when they hit the turtles but face counter attacks from the turtles when they shoot from the wrong answer arch. Here, the number of correct and incorrect answers are recorded and summarised in the Math Score.

image

A detailed Progress Report of the last 5 Challenge play sessions is available in the locked Parents’ Zone and the information will give you an idea where your child needs more practice. The app also supports multi-player profiles which means you can have a few children using the app and all their progress reports are recorded.

Points earned by the players can be used to purchase sea creatures from the OctoStore for their Trophy Case which may be motivating for some children.

My youngest doesn’t fully understand how the Advanced or Expert skill levels work and how to strategise in order to get more points but I see that he enjoys the games. They don’t demand too much from him and he can experience success all the time. If you have a child who gives up easily when playing with games that are too hard for him/her, you should check out OctoMinus as you can customize the games so that your child will better enjoy the games and wants to play (practice) more. The games are also great for developing better fine-motor skills, hand-eye coordination, visual attention, reaction and timing.

Lumio Kids by Lighthouse Learning – Review

image

I love all the Math apps from Lighthouse Learning for their emphasis on developing mathematical practices when teaching a math topic. They don’t just teach the strategies to solve mathematical problems, but aim to equip students with important mathematical practices that will help students make sense of the problems, use appropriate mathematical tools and strategies to solve them, explain their mathematical thinking, recognize math in everyday life and use math to solve everyday problems.

What we love…

All the great Lighthouse Learning apps available in one app.

What we’d love to see…

A more stringent parental gate and personalized learning program for each user.

Summary

Even though this math subscription app is still a work-in-progress, its strength lies in the quality educational content. With new features and more content being added in the future, it will prove to be better value for money than the separate apps.

Our Rating

In their apps, students complete elaborate series of fun and interactive skill-building puzzles and problems (structured learning pathways) that are accompanied by explanations and hints to facilitate deeper understanding. Each small but critical step in the problem-solving process is not overlooked and there is sufficient practice to help build fluency.

To date, they have developed a total of 7 highly rated Math apps covering geometry (Dragon Shapes, Shape Arts), fractions (Fruity Fractions), multiplication and division (Llama Drama, Lumio Farm Factor), addition and subtraction puzzles (Electric Sums, Treasure Sums). All of them impress with amazing graphics, fun stories and original mathematical puzzles that get students thinking about what they are doing while solving the puzzles. With clear animated instructions and superb learning support, the pathways guide students from the state of knowing to understanding, from doing to thinking.

image

I always look forward to Lighthouse Learning’s new releases as they often present me with creative approaches to teaching my youngest who is a visual learner and who has great difficulties with grasping abstract concepts. But with their latest app, I’m not sure if I am all that excited. This is because the new app, Lumio Kids is a subscription-based Math app. Even though it contains everything that I like from their apps, I generally prefer apps that don’t incur monthly fees. I wonder if there is any benefit to having this all-in-one app to their individual apps.

Let’s take a look at the advantages to using the Lumio Kids subscription app.

1) It is FREE with hundreds of brain-boasting puzzles and problems included to get your kids started!

2) It contains all the learning pathways from the individual apps in one place.

3) It definitely saves you money compared to buying the individual apps (which is priced at $2.99 each). Subscription starts from $2.99 for a month (but includes all topics) and it gets cheaper per month if you opt for longer subscription plans.

IMG_8841.PNG

4) New and updated pathways are added automatically (when online).

5) As a bonus, there will be some special pathways that are exclusive to Lumio Kids.

Lumio Kids is easy to use. You can either stream the pathways or download specific pathways for use offline. Completed pathways can be removed to free device storage. I understand that there will be at least one new topic released every month and Lumio Kids users will get to play the new content before these are released as individual apps. Users can also expect to have additional features such as multiple user profiles, progress reports and rewards.

IMG_8762.PNG

I am definitely looking forward to having a continuum of math topics that are aligned to the school curriculum from my favorite app developer. If you are not familiar with their apps, Lumio Kids will give you a great overview of all their apps. This is also a great opportunity for you and your children to experience their unique learning environment by trying out many of their cleverly-designed thinking games for free. If you are already a fan like me, do check out Lumio Kids and revisit it again when new contents are released and features such as multiple user profiles, progress and rewards systems are in place.
