Summary

An excellent spelling app disguised as an entertaining adventure game.

Our Rating

Mystery Word Town - Sight Word Spelling Mystery Word Town is the newest and first ever spelling app by Artgig Apps, developers of several award winning apps including Marble Math, Mystery Math Museum, and Drive About Neighborhood. In Mystery Word Town, a gang of thieves have stolen some gold. They have hidden them inside the buildings in town. Find all the gold to arrest the thieves and bring them to justice.

Each building in Mystery Word Town has multiple rooms to explore. Make sure to check all the doors, windows. and ladders to search all the rooms and to uncover all possible hiding places. When you attempt to use a door, window, or ladder, a word with some missing letters pops up next to it. Use the letters in the surrounding area or on your collection to complete the word and spell it correctly. This is the object of the game and it is a fantastic way for kids to learn and memorize spelling words. Kids who normally do not enjoy learning spelling words the traditional way would especially benefit from this. However, the words are limited to the ones that come with the app. I think it would be great if parents and teachers are able to input custom spelling words as well. If this is possible, I would love to see it on a future update.

iPad Screenshot 2

Every room comes with various themed objects. These objects are not interactive, but are wonderfully drawn and are fun to check out. The only interactive objects are the portraits and wanted posters on the walls. When you tap on them, the characters speak to you. They have a lot to say, so keep tapping on them to hear more. There is also a cute little ghost that follows you around as you explore and you can move him easily using drag and drop.

Mystery Word Town can be played by an unlimited number of players. Players can design their own avatar. They can choose from a selection of hair, eyes, mouth, and skin color. They can also choose a skill level. There are three skill levels (easy, medium, and hard), and players can look at the spelling words included in each level before choosing it. Finally, they can choose between two play modes: spelling your own word (filling in any letter that would complete the word correctly), or spelling a specific word (an audio prompt of the spelling word is played and the player must choose the correct letter or letters to spell the word)

iPad Screenshot 3

If you have a child that is learning how to spell or needs some help with spelling, Mystery Word Town is an excellent app to have. My little girl played this game and could not put it down. She loved exploring the buildings and meeting all the crazy characters in town. She enjoyed it so much she asked to play all three levels in one day. I am very pleased with Mystery Word Town and I highly recommend it.

Our Rating

Easy Spelling AidEasy Spelling Aid by Australian app developer Nuapp Productions is a spelling app with a difference. It doesn’t aim to teach a list of spelling words, but instead acts as a tool when the student is faced with a word they don’t know how to spell. The app utilizes speech recognition and can be used in a variety of languages including UK English, US English, Australian English and 18 other European and Asian languages. It contains no adverts, in-app purchases or external links.

The app is very simple to use the screen shows a large microphone icon and the student touches it before saying a word or short phrase. After speaking they press “done”, but if they forget the app will automatically assume they are done if there is a long pause. Once the app has processed the speech it appears as text on the screen.

IMG_1172.JPG

There are a number of different setting to choose from: a variety of different writing styles – including both print and cursive styles. The student can also select to have the text shown with or without background lines, if they select with lines they can choose 2 or 3 lines. There is also selection of dyslexia friendly text and background color combinations, these are only available without lines.

IMG_1161.JPG

For all the writing style options the text is shown in both upper and lowercase, but there is no capitalization of proper nouns e.g. Ireland is shown as ireland and IRELAND.

The student can also opt to have the text spoken as well as written. Having this option on is useful to double check that the word or phrase is what the student intended, but it is also good to be able to switch it off when they are working in a quiet area such as a library.

I tested the app out with my 7 year old and 11 year old sons and myself. Both boys have American accents and I have a British accent, they tested the US English and I tested both UK and US English. I found the speech recognition worked very well for my 11 year-old and myself. I found that it worked well for simpler words for my 7 year old, but he did have some issues with multi-syllabic words especially those where he has speech sound errors. He does not yet have a consistent “r” and his “tomorrow” was repeatedly transcribed as “tomalo”, although he wasn’t willing to put it in a phrase which might have improved the accuracy.

When children are working on writing assignments, or even just being creative and writing a story or in a journal, their creative thought process can be blocked when they come across a word they can not spell. Easy Spelling Aid is a great tool to use in this situation as it gives them a way to easily and quickly find out how to spell the word without waiting for an adult to assist them. I like that it has a variety of font options so it can be set to the style of font the child is using in their school, and for children still using multiple lined paper the lined paper options can help them see how to correctly place their letters.

IMG_1159.JPG

One downside to the app is that it can only be used online, this can be a problem if the student is using it without an internet connection. I would also like to see an option to look up the transcribed word in a dictionary, so that if the child was not sure if they had spelling for the correct word they could confirm it by looking up the word meaning.

I think this is a very useful tool that can be used from elementary school on. Middle and high school students, and even adults will also find it helpful when stuck on how to spell a word. I like that it provides a quick and easy way to find a word spelling, supports a variety of  languages including regional English options, has a choice of fonts, dyslexia- friendly options and the ability to hear the text spoken back. There are a few things I would like to see in future updates – capitalization of proper nouns, ability to use offline and ability to use a dictionary to check word meanings.  I think some younger elementary school children who still have speech sound errors may have some difficulty in getting accurate transcriptions, and may be less likely to realize it is the wrong word than older children. I would recommend this for children from 2nd grade up, younger children may also find it useful but are more likely to need an adult checking their results.

What we love…

Tricky spelling words are presented in context, fun circus theme, built- in reward games

What we’d love to see…

A “test” section where students can work on words from lists they have already completed where they type the word rather than choose from letter tiles, to check they have really mastered the word.

Summary

Overall, a fun way to work on tricky spelling words, it features a circus theme, error less learning and built-in reward games.

Our Rating

Tricky Spelling

Some English words can be difficult to learn to spell as the spelling can’t be worked out by following English spelling rules alone. Tricky Spelling was designed by educational consultant Fay Tran especially to work on teaching the spelling of these words. It is designed for students from age 8 upwards. The word lists are divided into 3 groups:

Tricky Long sounds
These are words with long vowel sounds in them, which according to phonics rules could be spelled more than one way e.g. late could also be spelled lait or laight

Tricky Homophones

These are words that sound the same but have different meanings e.g. sea/ see, knight/ night and pair/pare/pear.

Tricky Endings

These are words such as visitor and chicken, where there is a neutral vowel in the word ending making it hard to sound out.

iPhone Screenshot 4

Each spelling list contains 8 words and on completing a list the student can play a reward game, there are 432 words in total. Within each group the lists get progressively harder, so it is a good idea to work through a category in order, but the student can also choose to skip forward to any list.

Each spelling word is presented in a sentence – it is read aloud and appears as text with a box where the missing word is. The student is offered a selection of letter tiles and they must pick the right letters in the right order to complete the word. The letter tiles are placed by drag and drop. If an incorrect tile is chosen it turns red as it is placed over the box and won’t stick, correct tiles stick in place.

iPhone Screenshot 2

The app has a circus theme, with juggling clowns. After each list of words is completed the student has the option to play a reward game. There are a variety of games based around the theme of popping balloons from a circular board that spins with a clown on it. In some games you have to only pops balloons of a certain color, in others different colors are worth different numbers of points (positive or negative) and in others balloons have letters on and you need to pop the correct letters to spell a specific word.

iPhone Screenshot 5

The app has a variety of settings- you can independently adjust music and sound effects and choose from 3 different letter tile color combinations.

I had my 10 year old son test this app and his verdict “it’s really fun, I think it’s a great way to work on these spellings”. He missed the reward games initially (you have to opt to play them after each list), but once I showed him them he thought they were really fun break from the spelling too. The app narrator does have an Australian accent, but I only noticed one instance where the spelling was different from the North American spelling (cheque instead of check).

The one addition I would like to see is the addition of a “test” section where students can work on words from lists they have already completed where they type the word rather than choose from letter tiles, to check they have really mastered the word.

Overall, a fun way to work on tricky spelling words, it features errorless learning and built-in reward games. I like the fun circus theme. It is useful for children from 2nd grade onwards plus older children who are struggling with spelling and students learning English as a second language.
