Today’s interview is with Carla Kuipers of Shiny Things. Please visit their website, Facebook and Twitter pages.

Thank you for participating in our interview. Please tell us a little about yourself.

Shiny Things is a team of designers, developers, researchers and educators based in Sydney, Australia. Our range of apps has recently reached half a million downloads across 127 countries.

How did the idea for your app come about?

Founded in late 2011 we wanted to create apps for kids that are simple, engaging, innovative, and packed full of educational content.

And how long was the process from the original idea to the release of the app?

Since forming Shiny Things have developed a collection of digital publications. These include interactive apps for iPhone and iPads, as well as small series of eBooks.

Did you hire a developer or do it yourself?

We have a team of designers, developers, researchers and educators working behind ever app we develop.

What has been the hardest obstacle you have had to overcome in the development process?

Coming up with solutions to problems that have been avoided by others. You have to reinvent the wheel and challenged to create solutions.

Have you had much support during the development process (from family, peers, Apple Inc.)?

Last year three of their educational apps were selected by App Store Editorial team in the App Store Best of 2013 across six different countries.

What are your plans for the future? Will you be developing any more apps?

We will continue developing apps for children that while educating also delight the user.

What sort of feedback have your apps been receiving so far?

Parents, teachers and kids love our apps. We’ve had several reviews with other noteworthy mentions from Best Apps for Kids, from Geeks With Juniors, Top 100 App for Kids from Smart Apps for Special Needs, and Best Maths App of 2013 from Teachers With Apps.

And finally, what advice would you give to anyone considering creating their own app?

Be ready to research, develop, and road-test your idea.

Thank you so much for talking with us today and sharing a bit about your company. We really appreciated the chance to get to know you!
