Dr. Panda in Space by Dr. Panda – Review

Dr. Panda in Space is a universal app for iOS, Amazon appstore and Android which allows you to customize your own space ship and blast off and have open ended discovery in space of planets, asteroids, activities such as fixing your space ship, free play in zero gravity and more. This app is aimed at preschool and early grade school aged children with lots of great free play opportunities for the younger children during the exploration phase. The app begins with a customization of your spaceship where you then blast off into space and begin your exploration.

My first grader loved exploring all of the different space areas including bumping into the space rocks, helping out his familiar friends from Dr. Panda including the Pig get his television fixed, picking up different plants to feed to the aliens and the star exploration. My son loved finding the various flowers and feeding them – his favorite was the alien growing flowers out of his head. I also loved the collaboration of Dr. Panda and the characters as they helped out the alien in his spaceship and the others which encouraged them to earn objects which can be used both in free play and while with the aliens on the planet. We also liked the problem solving, for example going in the maze and having to pick up objects which encouraged creative and strategic thinking of where did they need to go to pick up the various objects. The graphics in the app were realistic and the animation was well done. After playing the app, I took the opportunity to show my son more about space and space exploration. My son was interested in feeding Dr. Panda and his friends when they stopped over on a few of the planets and wanted to be sure that he could “clean up” after eating.

In terms of enhancements, I’d love to see a “map” of all of the different activities. In addition, I’d love to see some more educational content added – perhaps there could be a discussion about some of the space concepts like why you need a helmet that there is no oxygen or why the tools floated away when fixing the aliens spaceship. I’d also like to have an opportunity to see what is in Dr. Panda’s “bag” after collecting the items.

There are no external links or in-app purchases. The parental lock which requires your birth year allows you to turn on and off music, subscribe to the newsletter, and like Dr. Panda on Facebook.

In summary, this is a fun app that encourages open ended play and free exploration. I loved the various activities which required creative thinking and completion of tasks within the app. This app is best suited to preschool and early grade school age and I think there are lots of great free play and activities contained within the app.
