Dr. Panda’s Veggie Garden by Dr. Panda is the newest in the Dr. Panda series. This app available for iOS and Android, allows your child to grow a variety of fruits and vegetables for their customers who are comprised of a variety of animals we have met in previous Dr. Panda games. The app allows you to plow, plant, water, harvest and of course take care of any insect infestations or critters from harming your crops. This universal app features sequencing, fine motor, visual skills as well as language to name objects within the app. The app features a variety of different “steps” which include: digging, planting seeds, watering and harvesting for five animal customers using 12 different fruits and vegetables including corn, wheat, strawberries and apples to name a few. In addition, there are two bonus mini games which help your child organize the tool shed.
This app is a great addition to the Dr. Panda suite of apps. I really liked the graphics and simplicity of the app which will make it appeal to children from toddlerhood and older. The step by step process helps children understand that vegetables come from a garden and there is a process for obtaining them. My son especially enjoyed planting the corn and the wheat. As children get older, parents can introduce additional concepts with the app to help them understand the growing process and perhaps even take it a step further to planting seeds with their children and helping them to grow.
In terms of enhancements, I’d like to see currency introduced to the app in a future update. Customers should possibly pay for their vegetables and fruits rather than just handing them off. This would add a different aspect to the game and perhaps make it more complete. It would also be nice to have section at the end of the app explaining each of the fruits and vegetables featured during the app. During the planting section, it would be nice if there was a “help” section as it took me a bit the first time I used the app to realize that you had to fill back in the hole after getting the dirt or that the seeds were shaken from a bag or placed in the hole. In the strawberry planting, it was a bit of trial and error to turn the pots so that the strawberries could ripen properly.
The app does include a parent lock on the first page, however, prior to enabling the lock that does not allow children to get into iTunes they can click and get directly into it. I would like to see the parent section made into either a “double tap” or a simple math problem so children are not able to get into the settings and change them. There are no links to in-app purchases or third party websites after using the “for parent’s” section within the app.
This app will be a great app for children from toddlers though grade school. The app has many opportunities for open ended play as well as the opportunity to explain a specific step such as the growing process in a simple concise manner to children. This app will also be helpful to parents trying to explain the growing process and science concepts to children as it is presented in a simple but straightforward manner.
